My Senator Mark Kirk lied about his military record. Nobody made much of a fuss about that.

By the way, it turns out that Kirk sponsored legislation that helped out a company that hired his girlfriend as lobbyist. Not that he sponsored much of anything else. Oh and after running as a "elect me to be a nonpartisan moderate" he lines up and salutes Grover Norquist on every key vote.

And those are his good points.

I'm of two minds in this. On the one hand, we have gone way overboard in dredging up things that are in a person's past. I don't think I would be willing to run for any national office, and my past "only" has a security violation from when I held an SCI clearance and not filing a state tax return for a year. (Well, that and the foursome weekend I had last Memorial Day;).) The backgrounds of candidates has become the political rorschach test since the days of Robert Bork's Supreme Court nomination. We overlook a blemish if we like the guy, but if we hate the guy's politics, well, that candidate loses credibility forever. I'm still outraged over George W's draft avoidance. I don't like Marco Rubio, so I think he's lying about his family history. And yet, I've embellished my family history to my own kids, and I know my dad did it when talking to me. I'm sure Rubio's parents embellished their coming-to-America story; how's he supposed to know better.

But one the other hand, I think I want to know if someone campaigning for my vote is lying about his military record. I'm offended by adultery. I voted for John Edwards in 2004 and if he'd still been viable when the 2008 Maryland primary rolled around, I probably would have voted for him then. Now, I don't want to touch him with a 10' pole, not because he's politically toxic, but because he's toxic, period.

I don't fuss this stuff much either way, for either party. That's Gotcha politics, for partisan hacks who are looking to score points.

    No.

I notice that I addressed the substance of your post by pointing out it is bullshit. But you didn't really address mine.

I guess I'm part native American, too...since my old Big Soccer forum avatar was the logo for the Cleveland Indians.

I get a kick out of how the libs on her spin and deflect like it's second nature.

Monday: "Awesome! Warren is a native American! She's even cooler than we thought!"
Tuesday: "Republicans are claiming she's lying, but it's probably a dirty election trick."
Wednesday: "Well, I still think she is one, because she says it's so, but if she is lying, the so and such Republican from the 9th district in Sout Dakota lied about his past, too"
Thursday: "Republicans are racist for even making this an issue!"
Friday: "Whatever. We should be talking about the real issues, anyway"

Plus, as I've said at least twice already in this thread, there is nothing indicating that Warren was recruited by Penn or HLS because of her alleged distant Indian heritage. She was sought by those schools, especially the latter, because she was a noted scholar in a couple of legal fields and was a very popular teacher, whose classes consistently had waiting lists after registration.

Brown voted against the equal pay for women bill yesterday. That's going to go over like a lead balloon here.

Misses the point. The character of Harvard or Penn isn't the issue- the question is Warren's character. It would be like Belicheck saying Spygate isn't a big deal, because the Patriots would have won the football game anyway. If you are such a great football team, why are you trying to cheat? If you are such a great law prof, why are you lying about your ethnicity? You can't excuse dishonesty by saying "but I'm so smart and people really like me". So what, you're still a liar. Belicheck is a brilliant coach and has great players. He's still a cheater.

The difference being that Belicheck a) intentionally cheated; b) it gave him an advantage; and c) he didn't do it once, in an obscure publication, in 1986.

That's a strange vote with an election upcoming ... Warren's going to use it to show that Brown talks the moderate talk, but he walks the Tea Party's walk.

    My Senator -

Which of you attacking Elizabeth Warren had a problem with this guy saying he was Navy Intelligence Officer of the Year when he wasn't, and said he fought in Operation Desert Storm when he did not?

That's what I thought. Move along now.

No, I haven't missed any point. You're operating under the assumption that she intentionally mislead people about her alleged Cherokee heritage. The only articles I've read state that she was told by her grandparents that this was part of her family's history and she accepted it as true. It's against this background that I say, regardless, she didn't gain any advantage from this family lore that looks to have been inaccurate. So all of this requires massive amounts of stretching to chalk this up as some major character flaw.

It's not a character flaw. It's character assassination. Plain and simple.

Ya know-- that really should be referred to as "reputation assassination." Presumably the underlying character is undamaged..

Belicheck claims that he didn't know he was breaking the rules either. She intentionally told the schools that she was a racial minority and the schools listed her as such. It is an insult to actual racial minorities who have long been discriminated against in the legal profession, by law schools and in the legal system. Doesn't matter what her family told her- she should have identified herself as being white for all professional and statistical purposes and only mentioned her family stories as an interesting trivia footnote. There is a very clear agenda as to why the schools preferred to have her listed as a minority and for liberals to minimize it reveals their hypocrisy. Defending principles and values should come before partisan defense of any particular candidate. When a person makes a mistake of judgment they should own up to it, not try to sweep it under the rug. Warren gamed the system, which even if it didn't get her a particular job, redounded to benefit to Harvard and helped her employer, which for the reasons previously stated, potentially harmed other minority candidates. That's not right and it isn't leadership.

Fact is she was touted as a Native American by the Harvard Lore School and actual Cherokees don't want to claim her: http://news.yahoo.com/cherokees-hammer-elizabeth-warren-ancestry-claim-ahead-mass-151112630.html

Your understanding of the situation is utterly and completely wrong. You continue to say things that multiple people have pointed our are simply not true. Not much more to say really.

And if you think Elizabeth Warren has enough hypocrisy in her entire body to equal what's in Scott Brown's pinky, you're delusional.

Maybe I was confused by Warren's inconsistent and shifting BS explanations of what happened.
