At least Dave Matthews Band is made up of some stellar musicians. They might not make the most appealing music but some of the musicians in that band and pretty damn good. On top of that John Mayer is a damn good guitarist. Never been big on Mayer but I saw him live a few years ago and walked away impressed.

You have. There is no way you havent. Especially in the 90s unless you lived in a cave. It is very bland music and you likely heard it while eating at an Applebee's or something if you didnt hear it on some Top 40 station.

What is screwed up is that Bush is currently opening for them on their tour. Nickelback should be carrying Bush's equipment, not headling a tour with them as an opening back.

I'm hot blooded, check it and see. Gotta fever of a hundred and three. I was 17 years old and even then I thought these lyrics suck and this band sucks. Only those days we said blows instead of sucks.

    Inspired addition on your part.

I also nominate Toto because I went to see them senior year of high school on the same night that Springsteen was performing a (non soldout) concert, and then Toto cancelled after the opening band performed. Which might have been a blessing in disguise but still.

It's kind of fun watching these kids argue about bad bands. If they'd ever heard Foreigner or Toto in heavy rotation on the radio AND coming out of every other car via the 8-track tape player, they'd have some perspective. I mean, Nickelback is pretty irritating, but compared to Toto?

For instance, I bet they can't imagine the amount of irritation I'm feeling right now because you implanted that Foreigner ear worm with your post. They have no idea how bad music could suck back in the day.

You started it. May you hear Cold as Ice echoing inside your brain tonight. As it is in mine right now.

Well, there's much worse than Toto or Foreigner... And these were all insanely played songs...

    You want vile ear worms:
Debbie Boone's You Light Up My Life

Starship: We Built this City (which gets bonus points because this was a formerly great band)

Billy Joel: We Didn't Start the Fire

Bobby McFerrin: Don't Worry Be Happy

For whatever reason, Val1's list doesn't bother me. I am not worrying about it, and am happy instead.

I just heard a Jack Black interview (Fresh Air maybe?) where he said he used to be a HUGE Bobby McFerrin fan. And man did that make sense. Suddenly I can draw a direct line from all of his Rock Opera vocalizations to McFerrin -- because I bought a Bobby McFerrin way back when after hearing him on a jazz station. The cloying and overplayed Don't Worry notwithstanding, he really is amazing--but his music doesn't have the greatest staying power. Sort of like Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

    Bonus Gauntlet:
If you don't think Jack Black is a Great rock singer, I will fight you.

I had a McFerrin album as well. I initially like Don't Worry Be Happy, but since we were talking about overplayed songs, I heard DW,BH approximately 15 times during an interstate jaunt from Dover DE to Fayetteville NC and was repulsed for the rest of my life.

Let's fight because Jack Black is all that is wrong with music and movies. The sooner he disappears the better.

But I have empirical, irrefutable proof on my side.
(The second song drives home the McFerrin point, btw.)

Trouble is, the first three songs made me start a fire to light up Debbie Boone in order to torch that friggin city built on Rock and Roll. And I am still not happy.

Oh: Could everyone pretend that I neg-repped JohnR for that earworm he dropped on his last post. Thanks.

One of the most disappointing concerts that I have seen. Heard all of this stuff about them being good live. Nope. Just stood there with some weak light show. Hearing a couple of their songs in a row is fine, but they started to sound the same (of course, most bands do).

Surprised no one has mentioned REO Speedwagon.

That's because of an agreement not to speak the unspeakable. Nice going, QuakeAttack. May one of Gary Richrath's chicken-choking guitar solos haunt your dreams.

Kevin Cronin's step-brother lived in my dorm in college. His radio show may very well have the worst in the history of college radio.

Oh dear God. Worse than the one in Chapel Hill dedicated to the glories of Meatloaf?

Maybe not, but the UNC folks are cheating. Anyone can have a crappy show if they play Meatloaf every week. I am pretty sure that the guy whose name I am thankfully forgetting had a more diverse range of bad taste.
