I imagine Bradley as the midfielder is supposed to go into the space he did, whereas neither of the center backs had a Brazilian player in their area - Marcelo should easily have been picked up by either Bocanegra or Onyewu. Neither of those players covered anyone.

Is it just me or are the replays crap this game? The bloodied Brazilian earlier = no replay so no idea what happened. The US appeals for a handball = no replay.

    Terrible game from Onyewu.

    Poor game from Edu.

Not much on display from Howard, especially compared to all of the saves the Brazilian GK made.

I would imagine it would have to be Boca rather than Onyewu. I would think you'd want Onyewu watching the ball/player in front of him while Boca takes the guy running in behind Onyewu. I'll have to go watch the replay again but I seemed to remember someone else in front or near where Bradley was.

    Points from the game:
    -2nd half looked better
-Jones lost his mark on the 2nd goal and could've easily been sent off for that tackle.
    -Weak PK
-Marcelo is incredibly talented and still resorts to BS play
-Bradley looks better in central mid vs d-mid
    -Hercules!!!
-Donovan was largely invisible. Same with Jones and Edu.
-On another night there could've easily have been 6 goals a piece.

I wasn't expecting a win, and on another night we could've tied or even won this. For this game we looked better in the 2nd half, especially after going to a 4-4-2. I'm still not sure why we had Edu outside instead of Bradley.

Onyewu didn't look good at all. Edu went unoticed to me. Did he play up top as a forward? I missed the opening 10 minutes, so I'm guessing we started out as a 4-5-1?

I think Beckerman was more noticeable in this game than the Scotland game. The thing I like about Beckerman is he plays the simple passes and makes it easy for the other players to receive the ball. He also floats around in the midfield going to the open space to open up possible passing lanes. Some of the other players stand in the same spot regardless of where the ball is on the field.

I think if we play with 2 DM it should be Jones and Bradley but if we go with the 3 DM Beckerman should be the 3rd one to stay back and defend. Bradley deserves the #1 spot no question about it but Jones (2a) and Edu(2b) should switch off when it comes to the 2nd DM spot.

I don't mind the 4-1 score line because we created a lot of nice chances, we need to clean up a few samll things defensively but overall I thought the US played a nice game.

The US need to stick to a 4-4-2. Always have 2 forwards on the field at all time.

    Well.... what a wonderful 48hrs.

-USA looked very timid. There is a difference between playing conservative and playing timid.
-Neymar: although very talented, a little bitch. If we come up against them again, pressure him every time he touches the ball
-Passing was very hectic, which is understandable due to the pressure, but it was more of hot potato then any type of passing.
    -Fabian Johnson; Getting that jersey!
-Beckerman gets tons of hate for no apperant reason. He looked pretty chill and very confident in his time he has played in the past two games.
-Deuce and Donovan will be vital to our success
-Gomez played very very very well

Overall, I'm really not to upset. On a different day, USA's shots go in, we win. Second half was very impressive.

I think it was Onyewu who lost his man and Jones tried to cover for him. Onyewu had him and let him go. If Onyewu didn't have a mark and was just to cover space then it was on Jones.

I didn't notice Edu much but I thought Jones did some good things.

Don't think I have ever been satisfied by a 4-1 loss, but tonight the US did do a lot of things well.

Edu did not show up and Beckerman will get the start against Canada.
Gomez is for real and will be a starting striker at the world cup.
Bradley was playing too deep, another reason for Beckerman to see time in the qualifiers.
Donovan followed up a hat trick with shit performance.

Chalk this one up to Klinsman. Against Scotland he played Edu deep with Jones and Bradley working with each other atop the midfield; against Brazil he flipped Edu and Bradley. This confused since Jones and Bradley were truly masterful together on the weekend, and messing with that against Brazil was perplexing. Mess against Canada!

Carlisle's evaluation of Onyewu, from ESPN:

"D Oguchi Onyewu, 2 -- Struggled in all phases, be it positioning, touch or passing. The handball he committed on the penalty was a harsh call, but there's no excusing the communication breakdown with Jones that led to Brazil's second goal. Nearly made amends with a late header that hit the bar."

A 2! Handball for the first goal, blew the assignment on the corner that resulted in the second goal, kept the Brazilian attacker onside on the fourth goal. Oh, and didn't come out to mark Marcelo on the third goal.

That's as bad a night as I can remember from a central defender for the US, and I have been a fan of Onyewu in the past. But this was beyond pathetic.

The final score in this game did not reflect the actual match that well. In the end, it probably should have been a 3-2 or 2-1 affair with Brazil still winning.
    • Fabian Johnson is solid. Though, I said the same thing about Lichaj and he... well where the hell is he?
    • Bradley can be our best player out there if we use him properly. Anybody that says the Serie A is just a washed up league needs to look at the evolution of Bradley at Chievo. He's in great form right now.
    • Was the approach to this game to give as little space as possible to Brazil by playing on what looked to be too narrow for FIFA guidelines and so freakin wet you could have slid 20 yards on a jog...
    • Marcelo is a piece of shit. Same with Neymar. I hate this new trend of player. Think you are amazing, have incredible skill, but act like you are a complete and utter jackass. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Pele, etc all had their arrogance, but they weren't assholes about it. At least not like Neymar and this new wave of talent is.
    • That Brazilian keeper made one hell of a debut
    • Our defense needs to work on marking guys in their own 18. You do that kind of stuff against Jamaica/Ryan Johnson and you'll get burned for goals just as easily.
    • Had this game actually been competitive (non-friendly) how many ejections would have been earned? Dolo looked like he was going to kill Marcelo, Jones was... jones. Torres said something about the center's mother that will haunt him for the rest of his life.
    • We ultimately got a reality check in this match.
The whole point of this match, when scheduled, wasn't to try and beat Brazil and prove to the world we are quickly on our way. Reality is, we are years off from having a chance to call ourselves one of the world's best teams/countries, but the progress seems to be there.

I was happy with how the match went. I didn't give a rats ass about the result. We showed where we have strengths (set pieces and nice wing play through our outside backs) and showed what we need to work on (possession under pressure and marking on counters/set pieces)

Anyone else notice how whenever Cherundolo was with the ball at the edge of the penalty box he'd forget he wasn't from Brazil and try to use some trick to get past his defender?
    Very annoying.

A few match thoughts from me:
    - Did you see what happened to the game when JK went with a 2nd forward? It tilted the field downhill for sure. Play 4-4-2 always please! Of course, it helps when that other forward is Dempsey.
    - Did you see what happened to the game when Beckerman came in? It put Bradley in a much more advanced position and he was a lot more effective, and suddenly the U.S. started creating chances again.
    - Sorry, I love Gooch, but he's over the hill. Time to put him out to pasture.
    - I used to be very bullish on Jermaine Jones...not any more. Lost his mark several times (including on the second goal) and should have seen a straight red. In a CONCACAF WCQ on the road, he gets a red for that tackle...can't have that. I have no problem losing to Brazil's joga bonito, but I do have a problem with losing to Brazil on set pieces.

    My turn!

    · Our defense is in trouble. Save for the LB, Johnson is a stud. Funny how the long time weak spot on our D is now the only strong part. Gooch was directly or indirectly involved in all 4 goals scored against us. Boca made quite a few turnovers and did a poor job of organizing the back line. 'Dolo was way to tentative in the first half. For a guy that usually is great at getting forward and sending in balls, he let Neymar get to him and as a result Marcelo was able to push up all night. In the second half he became too aggressive and did little to help the attack. Sure you can say Boca and ‘Dolo had off nights but they are both 33 and at 35 shouldn’t be starting come the World Cup. I hope Chandler changes his mind and will be our future RB.
    · While Bradley is probably our best D-Mid, he’s much better used as a 2-way Center Mid like in the Scotland game. He needs to be able to get forward in the attack at all times. Edu isn’t up to par. He’s not good enough to be the lone D-Mid and isn’t skilled enough to help the attack. Hopefully this can change come the World Cup but until it does, Beckerman should be our D-Mid. Jones, is Jones. He has good moments and bad ones. We just gotta hope he has more good than bad in matches that matter.
    · Landycakes had a bad day. Marcelo shut him down completely and ‘Dolo did little to help. I just hope it was one of those games after a great match where you have a let down and not his earlier comments coming true.
    · Gomez was amazing. Hustled all 90 minutes and was unlucky to only have scored once. With him, Boyd, Jozy, and Dempsey I’m confidant in our ability to score.
    · Dempsey showed why he is our best player currently. Soon as he came on, the teams tempo went up considerably. We’re a much more confidant side when he’s on the pitch.
    · The end result wasn’t as bad as it appears. Sure, Brasil deserved to win 4-1 but we showed a lot more in the second half and if not for some amazing saves by Rafeal it could’ve been a different game.

Bring on the Cannucks and WC qualifying!

alrighty then, i managed to somehow record the game (stupid wedding rehearsal) and not see the score until i got home 5 hours later. here's my thought:

first and foremost, edu is flat out the biggest piece of shit we have in the midfield. no questions asked, he is absolute GARBAGE. i was watching the middle three with particular interest last night to see if they could repeat their performance in the scotland game. in this game they HAD to be strong or the US would fail miserable. they were rubbish and the US failed miserably. but i'll pick on edu first. this is a player that yesterday looked like he would have gotten his jock handed to him by the pot smoking fat ass hippies at the local parks on saturdays playing pick up games in portland. his touch was so miserably bad i cringed every time the ball went to him. he got dispossessed EASILY around a half dozen times or so, when the ball came to him he either took 3....4...5 touches and promptly "passed" (read, hacked at the ball with his chicken leg) to nobody or a brazilian would look at him and he would lose the ball. on a scale of 1-10 i would rate him, oh, say....a -500000. he looked like a bumbling idiot all night long, i cant believe it took klinnsman so long to sub him off.

bradley can be really good, but not when he is the "shield" d-mid. he is a player that MUST play box to box and get into the attack. edu is supposed to be the player that sits in the shield position (but he's steaming hot garbage so it's SHOULD be beckerman). you could see bradley just dieing in that position and IMO is directly at fault for the third goal (why hasnt anybody mentioned this?). go watch the third goal, bradley is literally just walking into the box like he dont give a shit, while marcelo makes a freaking 90 million yard run right up through bradley's area, has a nice little picnic in the middle, a few bottles of wine, some cheese and crackers and then taps in the easiest goal he'll ever score. ********ing pitiful marking and it HIS man and HIS area that completely gets exploited. he's GOT to be more forward, where edu was playing, with jones while a more disciplined d-mid sits in front of the defenders. i dont know why klinnsman changed this from the scotland game, but it backfired horribly. other than his header, he really didnt do anything until beckerman came on and he could shirk any and all defensive responsibilities.

jones was jones, like others have said, he's an enforcer and a strong player, moments of brilliance followed by moments where he should be straight sent off. ugly ass tackle, kind of a message type of thing IMO. but he was physical and got forward like he's supposed to.

the defense was miserable, quite frankly it's the worst games i have ever seen from boca and gooch. both of those guys were flat out dominated. gooch was responsible or had a hand in all 4 goals (unlucky on the pk). he flatness on the 4th goal which allowed pato to break down the offside trap pretty much summed up the whole night. entirely too lazy and pathetic. johnson is the only one worth rating on the defense and it's because of his offense. he was very strong and next to gomez i thought he was our second best player.

on any other night this game ends 6-5. howard made an incredible foot save early for the US, then the US managed to miss a sitter, head off the bar and see brazil's brand new goalie play the game of his life. how dempsey managed to kick that ball OVER the crossbar, when it's maybe 1 foot in front of the goal is a feat that may not be reproduced in our lives ever again. and that was probably one of the greatest goalie performances against the US i've ever seen.

gomez played lights out, he's a man on a mission and as soon as we can get him, dempsey, donovan and bradley (in a more attacking mid role) you will see the US offense click more.

last thing from me. i hate being a homer and making biased observations, especially when it comes to the USMNT. i've tried to curb my appeal for beckerman, see it more objectively, try to give other midfielders the benefit of the doubt, etc etc. i cant do it anymore, seeing a performance like that from edu and bradley made me sick. flat out, not joking for a second, beckerman played better in his 8 minutes on the field than edu did in his 70+. i'm not even being a homer about it. beckerman in his time was calm on the ball, didnt take any mis-touches, made simple passes after 1 or 2 touches, broke up a brazil counter cleanly, played a nice dummie and almost got in to the box on the release (he obviously doesnt have the wheels to close that ball down, especially going up a speedy brazilian), and would have released gomez up the sideline but gomez bungled his clean pass out of bounds. i hope to god that beckerman gets the start against canada on sunday with bradley and jones more advanced. ******** edu.

Fabian Johnson and Hercules Gomez looked - to me - to have played their way into the regular rotation. It's one game, but they were fantastic. I agree with most of you - that with the exception of the outside backs, the formation was stronger in final 20-30 minutes.

Qualification will not be an obstacle - but this team could go further and challenge Mexico IF (big if) we shore up the D. Both CBs were rough last night, there's a lot of Gooch hate but Boca had several miserable moments too. Both are stellar in the air - but so is Goodson, who is more mobile.

At present the Klinnsman Doctrine - despite the loss - is working. Our ceiling of play appears to be higher than it was. Now he's got to find the right set of consistently available pieces. That team created a lot of shots. Part of that is Brazil being wide open, but there was quality going on.

did anyone else hear Klinnsman SCREAM at Neymar "COME ON, GET UP!" when Naymar went to the ground right after he came back on after the Jones tackle? i thought that was hilarious, klinnsman was pissed off at the number of brazil dives around that time, with the US pushing to get a goal back.

had this been a competitive match, shit would have gone down on multiple occasions last night.
The kick out that Marcelo did on Dolo was something that needs to be fined by FIFA or somebody. That kind of bullshit needs to be sent packing

I'm not sure I have the best understand of The Klinsmann Doctrine either, but I'm pretty sure of one thing: It's not Bunker Bob's "6-4-0 let's-sit-back-and-hope-to-score-off-a-counter-or-set-piece" philosophy.
