Sounds like the Silverbacks are the team that's missing out the most. I think it's more understandable for the Stars to sell their game rights, given that they have had low-average attendance and that they're league owned. But to sell your home-game rights and then not even get to play at CenturyLink? That feels like a pretty low blow.

Scorpions and Kickers seem to be DII and III's big winners.

I'd say we count as big winners too - four hours after individual tickets went on sale for our Tuesday game, they'd all sold out.

Yeah, drawing the Galaxy was a great deal for the Railhawks. But that data wasn't out when I made the original post. Kudos to the FO for getting the word out there and getting the ball rolling in such short fashion.

Well LA probably won't be any good in the Open Cup so I think the Railhawks are one of the teams that could advance for the NASL.

Also who ever is playing the RedBulls.

My 2 NASL picks to advance are the Hawks and the Scorpions.

Bryan did a good job of not putting words into Downs' mouth or of making broad assumptions, but I can't help but feel like this is bad news for the league. Maybe the process is simply held up, but I didn't read the sort of specifics which would lead me to believe that these potential ownership groups will a) pull the trigger or b) be the type of individuals the league has been saying they want.

I'm also still foggy as to whether these 12 new ownership groups all represent new franchises or whether some are interested in taking over an existing club. Downs seems to imply the former by reiterating his dedication to the 20 by 2020 model, but I don't want to jump to too many conclusions.

And where does Ottowa fit into that number? Are they one of the 12, or are they considered on their own?

If expansion is delayed that means the league will have to follow through and support the Stars for the third and final season, right?

Third and final? I honestly was not aware that the league had set a time limit on finding a new ownership group.

Doubt it's set in stone but the league did say they would support the Stars for three seasons. This was supposed to allow the club time to get things in order and not be solely focused on finding a new ownership group.

So now an announcement probably by end of June?

I'm glad to see San Diego in the mix, but I have a feeling it's a bit further off than the others mentioned. (SD has their beloved Chargers, and they might be here forever, but every two or three years there's talk of them moving to Virginia or LA or San Antonio...).

    The cities mentioned were:
    St. Louis
    San Diego
    Phoenix
    Albuquerque
    Las Vegas
    Sacramento
"Greater Los Angeles" (specifically Anaheim or Riverside)

And, if I'm not mistaken, they need to pick two by next season, then one more (and Ottawa) for the 2014 season.

    Unless they get a waiver.

I mean, for the general good of the order, I think they need to show some progress, obviously. And having, say 14 teams as opposed to 10 insulates you a bit more should an owner for Minnesota not be found or some other team suffer an ownership change of heart or financial calamity.

I'm naturally skeptical when someone talks about some large number of interested parties for D2 expansion, just because it seems a tad optimistic, but it's likely a bell curve situation: some are very interested and are reasonable, some have maybe expressed an interest but probably couldn't pull it together and most are probably in the middle.

I just think anywhere in Southern Cal is a bad idea. L.A. has so much already. With Chivas up in the air kindof, who knows where the goats will go. I like the Phoenix idea. St Louis is almost certainly a lock, and I'm guessing one of the TBD June announcements.

What about OKC? I'm surprised that's not in the mix. What about New Orleans? I'm new to the expansion discussion, but these seem logical.

You wouldn't so much if you lived here.

(And by that I don't mean "You wouldn't want a team here if you lived here." I mean "If you lived here, you'd see how tough it would be to make it work here.")

I believe you, can you elaborate on the difficulties? I'm sure you'd need FieldTurf instead of real grass due to the rain weather. I'm in San Antonio, and I'm guessing that Phoenix, like SA has a decent hispanic population. What are the hurdles in PHX?

I wonder how much interest has been created with Montreal's (financial) success... In other words, how many potential owners groups are out there saying, "I will do this if eventually it means MLS..."

I'm sure this would be a big issue. I can't see it being a big enough issue to make a group not want to play there, though. I've never been to Phoenix, but I know we've been in the 100's for several days now. I'm not looking forward to our stadium in July/August. But it wouldn't cause me to not go to the games. Just a personal opinion.
