NBC Sports Network showed two MLS games and a US National Team game this past weekend. So how many more GAMES would you like them to show?

why i am from bosnia and there were funny match fixing scandal in regional league there. where one team (and this is the reason why i believe that it is all of the team who new or this is BS) is supposeto win and they would give them 4000 dollars but then they made a mistake and went to another team and gave them 8000 not to win. first team find out that other team got more money then them and they start scoring own goals and other team was tring to prevent them from doing it. so point in this is that one player could not do what you saying he did or whole of the lazio, bari catania teams new about what they suppose to do or this is a BS

The FA and EPL would be insane to simply go for the money when the rights go up for bid for the 13-16 seasons. FOX and ESPN are due a ton of credit for helping to vault the popularity AND the accessibility of their league and sport in the US. Do they really want their product to be seen on fewer screens over the next 3-4 years? Al Jazeera will NEVER own an over the air broadcast network (against FCC rules) and, therefore, will never reach as many TV households as FOX, ABC/ESPN, or NBCU/Comcast. There are way too many 'ifs" with a potential Comcast/beIN Sports partnership, and they would have to have WAY more than 8 matches on NBC for that to fly. Also, if beIN/Al Jazeera has so much cash, why didn't they bid on the FIFA World Cup rights in the US that FOX won?? FOX owns all the US English language broadcast and digital rights from 2015 - 2022 which includes the Cup when it will be in Qatar. Not very strategic of them. At most, they might get one package of games as an experiment, but no more than that. And, having been both a Dish and DirecTV subscriber, I will NEVER go back to Dish again.

The Emir apparently saw the results of the bidding for U.S. rights to WC 2018-2022 and then decided to buy the rights to leagues featuring global brands.

Qatar Media won the rights to Serie A in December

Qatar Media apparently won the rights to La Liga in February

All of us were in the dark until The Gaffer at EPLTalk.com decided to make a few phone calls in March.

I had no reason to call anyone as I was out of the industry for a while.

Once I heard what Qatar Media was doing, I had to go back to work.

Nevermind, that looks like a blog about TDT (Spain). I suppose the BeinSport mentioned is the one from France.

I believe the rights for FIFA events have a different criteria. That is why Bein would have not qualify for the bidding. Nonetheless, it is clear that this new network, is going to interrupt all the gains football has gained in this country. So, for the next three years, we are going to experience, what we did when Fox Launch Fox World Sport and Goltv sign an exclusive lease with Dish.

Yet, the game goes on. Where there is a will there is a way. So speculated all you want, the writing is on the wall.

Again, don't assume that you know everything, because you don't. No one on the outside does. Things are fluid in a start-up situation.

As far as the upcoming season is concerned: only two matches were expected to draw large numbers of viewers anyway: the Barcelona vs Real Madrid clasicos.

I have said for weeks that the clasicos will likely air on Telemundo. You can add NBC Sports Network to that list if there were no conflicts with other live events.

beIN Sports / beIN Deportes will need to conduct brand awareness events. The best brand awareness event available to beIN Sports / beIN Deportes is to put the 2 biggest matches on widely-available networks as paid programming.

Serie A averages only around 50000 viewers per match in English. Ditto Ligue 1. Ditto the rest of La Liga. These products don't "sell".

What really matters in the U.S. market is EPL, EPL, and EPL in 2013-2014, no matter which side (FOX-ESPN-Univision or beIN-NBC-Telemundo) wins the rights. No way will beIN Sports bid without a partner at this point, and that partner, as I understand, is looking more and more likely to be NBCUniversal, which is 51% owned by Comcast.

Did the tail really wag the dog?

    Possibly.

If someone did start making phone calls or firing off emails to the higher-ups at Comcast and NBCUniversal after reading my stuff, then good for them.

I wanted them to move after reading my stuff.

    ==

beIN Sports has money to spend on a lot of things, including top talent.

    Phil Schoen has left GOLTV.

SI.com's Grant Wahl tweeted on Tuesday that Ray Hudson has left GOLTV.

One of Schoen's colleagues at GOLTV leaked the news already that Schoen will be calling La Liga for beIN Sports.

Guess who the analyst will be?

The buzz: the entire band appears to have walked across the street together. 2 English-language announcers, 2 Spanish-language announcers, and the producer.

Still remember the changeover between ABC Monday Night Football and NBC Sunday Night Football when the entire band ultimately moved across the street?

    --

You really want a strong candidate for the studio presenter role [a la Rebecca Lowe (ESPN UK)]?

How about this particular British female presenter who made her debut 12 years ago on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN International? She is available for freelance work after quitting CNN International last December, presumably so that she can work much saner hours (no more anchoring at 2:30am on weekends) as a tennis club pro in order to have time to raise her 2 young kids properly. Her agent works for IMG so she won't come cheap:

Bottom line: if you think like a media executive, then you know that the only international club soccer matches from Europe that really matters in the U.S. market are EPL matches involving the "big 6" clubs and the Barcelona-Real Madrid clasicos.

The other matches don't move the needle, so they don't really matter to the big picture. Not having the other matches widely available due to distribution issues won't cause overall interest of big brand name international club soccer to go down.

The big brands in EPL and La Liga will be fine no matter what happens.

The networks will find ways to get the big matches out to the viewers. They will buy time if they have to.

I should have included the UEFA Champions League on the list.

Serie A matches aren't selling. Ligue 1 doesn't sell. La Liga doesn't sell except the 2 clasicos.

the issue to aj isn't so much whether serie-a, la liga, or ligue 1 get wide distribution.
the problem is whether BEin gets wide distribution.
aj want their presence to become familiar.
    they want name recognition.
there's a 'vanity' element, which to aj serves a strategic purpose way beyond soccer.
that's the explanation for why they payed so much money for a couple of 'pencils.'
and this reasoning applies more strongly in some u.s. markets than in others.
aj may be more concerned about its footprint in ny or dc than elsewhere, for example.
the distribution of this content isn't necessarily to be looked at in the national context.

A strategic partnership with Comcast in particular will be the crucial element that may determine whether the beIN Sports USA Networks business will be successful in elevating the image of the Qatar brand in the U.S.

    Stay tuned.

So you're saying an Arsenal vs Wigan or Chelsea vs West Brom sells better than Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid or a Barcelona vs Valencia. I find that hard to believe when Real Madrid and Barcelona have more fans in the USA than Arsenal and Chelsea.

Check your figures. ESPN Deportes radio has been airing La Liga for two years now. The popularity of la Liga is very hight among Latinos in the United States. If you ever listen to their radio, you will notice that a great deal of Mexican, Central Americans and South Americans call to talk about La liga. So when you make the statement that La Liga does not sell, you should re-think that.

La Liga has become very Popular in all the Americas, and the Football fan base in this country who are of Latin America heritage are also following La Liga.

Nonetheless, La liga does not have the television ratings that the EPL has, but it was gaining momentum. In addition, if you ever watch la liga, you will see that La Liga is either as good or a better product than the EPL.

In addition, the top two players in the world are in La liga with the support of some of the best players in the world, and is not just Barcelona and Madrid, but you also have Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Malaga, Valencia and Athletic who all have good seasons.

So if you are a Media mogul, you want to put your money on a league that has talent and growth potential. You stand a better chance of getting foreigners, and second generation latinos hook on La Liga than getting White people hook on "Soccer".

I am just saying, and by the way, COMCAST has not interest and clue about soccer. Some may like the idea but must of the executive team is not on board on that idea. Remember the roots of Comcast "a cable operator which started in the South ".

Let's see them do that EVERY weekend. The weekend before had zero. If they would have picked up US vs Guatemala in Guatemala that would have IMPRESSED me.

In another post someone said NBC Sports would have Barcelona/Real Madrid on next year - unless it clashed with a live event. Like what? AMA MotoCross.

Well, even though I'm sure impressing you is in their business plan somewhere, the Guats were under no obligation to sell the rights to that game to any US network. They did what they did.

And it's unrealistic to expect NBCSN to have two MLS games and an international EVERY weekend. But, then, realism isn't a staple around here.

The national team game every weekend obviously difficult. Two MLS games? Not so difficult. What would it supplant - AMX Moto Cross.

only epl sells oximoron. serie a and la liga sells to not on fox because fox is all about epl 24/7 so how can people know about any other league when only thing you hype is epl and call everything else garbage with fox propaganda. la liga sells but it is goltv . these two channels will boost the popularity of serie a and la liga because they will have people who are passionate about it and will educate viewers about la liga and serie a same thing that fox is doing for epl but didn't want to do for serie a

So "Comcast" started in Mississippi? Big deal. The geographic location of a company when it started over 50 years ago has absolutely no bearing on the business decisions made by its executives today.

If Qatar Media/Comcast/NBCUniversal were to come to fruition, then one possibly scenario would be...

Aug 2013 - EPL arrives to squeeze out Serie A in the morning. Only 2:45pm ET Serie A on Saturdays and Sundays will remain. The rest will be streamed.

Jan 2014 - Big East basketball arrives. No soccer reruns during prime time on Mondays-Thursdays and Saturdays in January and February. Basketball doubleheaders 5 nights a week after 7pm ET.

September 2014 - Big East (American) Football arrives. Late game at 10:30pm ET on Saturday, hosted by Boise State or San Diego State

La Liga matches not involving Barca or RM will be on beIN Deportes. beIN Sports really has no reason to air any La Liga other than Barca or RM. The two clasicos will be on NBC Sports Network and Telemundo until full distribution is achieved.
