Yep. He should have been put in a central position. As far as not being good enough, Gomez didn't convert anything the entire match.

    totally Agree.
Gomez was the reason why we LOST...the final. He messed up 5-6 great chances without even putting a shot. And one of the shot he made from a very close range was way over the bar.

I mean imagine if the penalties in Madrid didn't go so well, who do we blame? IT WILL BE GOMEZ..who wasted at least 4 clear chances from close range.

He is NO CL material..he is Bundesliga qualified...but will continue to struggle in games of high importance and when every chance needs to be taken.

I hope to see him out of the team soon. or be on the bench.

even though I want to say crap about Robben...but He really played his heart out. He was in defense in attack. Though single minded, He tried hard VERY HARD.
while watching the game, a friend of mine kept pointing out how Gomez wasn't moving at all. He was just standing there most of the time.

You know I gotta say, bayern do have a great team. With some minor additions this summer we can really contend for 3 titles every year.

The more I calmed down and think about it, the more I realize this team does have heart..

Look how they made the "group of death" look like..
Look how we bounced back from Basel defeat.

Look how we played in Madrid, like bloody god damn Heroes in BOTH legs. We were down 2-0 in Madrid and we fought back harder then I have seen them do this season. Madrid were shitting their pants trying to figure out what the hell is going on...

Look how much we COMPLETELY dominated Chelsea..

The one thing I did realize, aside from all the "heart" bullshit and penalty kicks not penalty kick takers bullshit and neuer not good enough bullshit, blah blah..,

Look at the single biggest concern over the last 3 CL matches and you'll see... Gomez, Gomez, Gomez...

How many chances did it take him to score a last ditch effort goal in the dying minutes of the first leg? Like 10 clear cut chances!

How many chances did he have in the 2nd leg? Again all on his lap?

Again in the CL final....he is the one constant in all this..

For some reason during the BL and up to the semis and beyond he has that killer instinct one touch strikes, once he reached the semis and finals, he literally had 10 clear cut chances per game to finish it.

He always had a heavy touch, or kicked too high, or too many touches, instead of just blasting it on target like he always did before... I really think it comes down to him, of he would've converted any of his many chances it wouldn't of ever went to that level in the final. The game would've been signed and sealed by half time.

Maybe in the summer we really need a top class striker to compete with Gomez and come on especially in the big games when Gomez doesnt deliver...

Gomez missed a lot of chances vs Madrid but he scored a goal and won the penalty. In other words, 2 of the 3 goals are because of him vs Madrid. Vs Chelsea he was terrible though. Vs Madrid at least he played well to make up for his lack of missed chances, vs Chelsea he was terrible esp after missing those two great opportunities...

The issue at the moment is that Bayern need more goals from the players behind Gomez. When he sucks vs big teams, Bayern also sucks vs big teams. Robben "used" to be that guy, and we need that guy back. Ribery in bigger games is always the creator and hardly ever the scorer and he still needs to develop such an ability. Obviously Muller and Kroos need to attack the box and offer more, as this is quite a big issue. The AM doesn't score nor do they offer enough in attack. It's really sad since there's always ACRES of space in the middle. Gomez has 2 players on him and Robbery always have players double teaming them. Kroos nor Muller are doing enough and no I don't think buying someone else is the answer. They're youth players and both fantastic, they just need to develop that aspect of their game. We simply have to be patient...

I don't see how Gomez is the problem, I think he chose the most important match of his career to play like complete garbage. He didn't even start (much) 2 years ago and I think he had 8 goals in 8 matches last year, scoring 2/3 vs Inter. It doesn't even make sense blaming him for the other two seasons.

If there is something clear to me though, is that when you get a ********ing penalty to score in a final, you've got to ensure it's in.

As this thread winds down, let's hope that the FO sees the same things brought about in this board and addresses it

    For next season (all comps)

    1. Robben may have a mental hurdle to overcome next season.
    2. BvB IS a mental hurdle for the team
    3. Gomez needs competition for his spot
    4. PKs/Set pieces need some serious attention
    5. Bench depth/trim the fat...and replace with players
    6. Variable/hybrid formations

IMHO opinion this one is the most important ... Seriously, 20 corners + all the fouls and no goal is ridiculous ... And taking the Season as a whole, How many times did we score in set pieces ?? I believe the number is extremely low... That's just embarrassing

Gomez's penalty win deserves credit, but not as much as you're giving it. Pepe made a complete hash of it and it wasn't like he was through on goal or anything. He had a pretty bad performance against Madrid, and could/should have put at least 2 goals.

This I agree with completely, but we can't afford to be "patient". Are you saying having someone like Higuain or Benzema would not have helped? Of course it would. Throughout the game however, Kroos was a DM - he can't score from there.

I think Robben has big issues that aren't remediable. Am I the only one who thinks he could have been considered a legend for the the Netherlands and Bayern had he kept his shit together? I remember, final of the 2010 world cup he was 1 vs 1 with Casillas, TWICE - and made a complete ********ing mess out of it. Now, he had a penalty in the 91st minute, and made a complete atrocity of that also. Had he converted just 2 of those, whichever 2 of those three chances - his market price would've gone through the roof and teams would have feared him a lot more. What a sad career for a tremendous player.

while the easiest thing to do is say we need to get rid of player X and acquire player Y, reality is quite different.

For one of the first times in a long time, we don't have a glaring weakness on the roster. Every single position at least has a good starter there. Depth is still an issue, but Shaqiri, Starke, Dante were purchased for that reason.

We need to add a few other quality depth players. Lars Bender would be ideal, after giving it some thought. Young enough not to be a primadona but good enough that he could eventually develop into a full-time starter.

You can sum this with one word: Choking ...

Robben is a great player, but I simply don't trust him to deliver when the team need him the most...

We're talking about one game, his last game for the club, the final game of the season. Given the player and person Olic is we didn't have to worry about whether he contribute or not. He ran his socks off in his cameo and was still part of one of the best chances we had all game. Imagine what he could have done had he been played in the right position. The argument is not whether he was still in 09/10 form because he obviously wasn't but that was irrelevant to my point anyways. Point is, Olic was misused and was needed elsewhere. Who knows what difference that could have made.

Reading past the douche baggy comments..

It would be nice to either eliminate penalties shootouts or make it so it's a small chance of making it that far.

How about resetting the substations after 90 mins, with former players being able to come on.. Forcing 3 fresh legs to make the difference in the game..

Honestly no matter how you look at it, one team is going to try to use ANY system that's implemented to their advantage matter what. Plus the fact your NEVER going to make everyone happy..

But I think in the near future the simplest way to get something positive going is resetting all subs after 90 mins, higher chance of scoring in ET.

Also if you think that would only work towards teams with deep benches (Barca/Madrid etc). You gotta figure the other team can use their 3 fresh legs to do what they need to do, to stop the other teams fresh legs..

Plus resetting would give coaches chance to change tactics throughout the game more, not just all the eggs in one basket deal like it is now (90mins/injuries)..

If he played in the right position, he could have been more helpfull, or it couldn't made a difference at all ... It's chance ...

And unfortunately We'll never know ...

Help yourself. I don't want Bayern to become Chelsea or Man City or Real Madrid -- constantly swapping players in and out looking for the mix that will pay off. We have good players and they are young. We should stick by them and build an identity rather than just a brand.

Anyone looking for a club that will spend to achieve high ambitions I think the PSG bandwagon is about to depart. Don't think its happening at Bayern any time soon.

What we do know is that players who play their natural positions do better there than out of them, that's a pretty universal fact.

There can be a balance for the guys that think it's important to grow our own players as well. If that's the case then we should be able to spend big to fill in the gaps.

Gomez and Olic play in the same position, Ribery was injured, What do you suggest should have been done? Play Gomez on the LW and Olic in his natural position or what would you have done in that situation last Saturday

Keep the same setup as it is now (90 min + two 15 min periods... no golden goal) until 120 is up. Then keep playing (still 15 min periods) as long as it takes but making it sudden death (ie golden goal). Not sure at what stage of a competition shootouts should be eliminated (maybe before the semifinals).

Regarding the substitutions..... maybe add an additional sub for each extra period (one after 90 and one after 120).

Olic came on after Müller had already gone out so there was room in the middle and behind Gomez if Heynckes didn't want to pull him. Move Robben to the left, ask Lahm to play higher, Chelsea weren't a threat anyways at the end. Hell, even Pranjic and Rafinha could have thrown out there to make room for Olic in the middle. I honestly don't think Heynckes contemplated any alternatives or even practiced them.

Maybe keep the first 15 as is but then reset the substitutions for the second 15 and institute the golden goal? If attrition is the problem that PKs solve then the key is to reduce attrition without taking away the importance of endurance.
