Having grown up in Toronto, I have to say that you grow to appreciate the big Canadian girls on a cold January night. The little skinny ones can't keep you warm.

I think our learned friend was referring to the fact that no Canadian teams remain to contend for the Stanley Cup.

I dunno, the idea of the Leafs in the playoffs sounds like a joke to me!

Maybe you'd have a point if you knew what you're talking about. But, as usual, you don't. Especially when you're basing your narrow minded opinion on your experience at one bar.

Did anyone else have the screen intermittantly flash diagonal or something like that. I taped CSN+ and had a weird flicker the entire game.

And what a result it was. Way to bounce back from the midweek loss and hell traveling to Toronto.

    Thx,

    Jay!

    Well, I'll be the contrarian.

I'm very very glad we won; and by the 80th minute, I was convinced we were gonna win -- rare for me even when we're up three or four goals, let alone just two -- and started celebrating. Anyone who knows me IRL knows that's rare for me.

And yet, for much of the match earlier, the match was very much in doubt for me. To me, Toronto looked like the better team in the first half. Although neither team looked good, they created more chances, and seemed to hold the ball better and move it more cohesively and constructively.

Our halftime subs seemed to me to level things -- we seemed about as likely to score as Toronto did -- right up until Pontius' goal. As soon as we scored, it seemed to start slipping our way; and when we scored a second time, Toronto seemed to collapse mentally. Hardly surprising given their situation. But the point is, I don't think we played very well; and I think we were outplayed for a good chunk of the match, and were lucky to not have given up a goal or two.

I know someone's sighing and thinking "yes, of course we didn't play that well, we were tired and had a makeshift lineup out there." Yes; but I think that was determined by our approach to the mid-week match, and as such I don't think that had to be so true. We got away with it, which is great. But I don't have the surety others do here that we were bound to win from minute 1.

That said, there were a number of things about this match that were wonderful; but one stands out for me. Everyone has commented on Salihi's goal. But regarding Pontius' goal, I haven't seen anyone comment on the most important, most spectacular thing of all: he scored it with his left foot. Since he came here, I can't count the number of times I've seen him squander a good scoring opportunity because he wasn't willing to take the shot with his left foot. For him to take that shot from there, and put it on frame, with his left is at the minimum a huge step in his confidence in his own abilities. Fantastic.

Totally agree about the left foot. In fact, at first I wasn't sure it was Pontius. There was no hesitation, no effort to put the ball on his "strong" foot, and plenty of mustard on the shot. He's not only regaining fitness; he has become a more versatile player.

I almost choked when I saw that Pontius left.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the first Pontius lefty goal ever in DC. And not just any goal, but a shot that even Boskovic would be envious of, and he's left footed.

Right now Pontius has 3 game winning goals. Gotta be in the running for team MVP. I know everyone looks at Santos as the surprise of the season, but Pontius is quickly emerging.

Who knew breaking a tibia would help you be a better finisher

Pontius is a very pleasant surprise this year. DCUnited.com had a story on Pontius a couple of weeks back where he talks about working with Josh Wolff and the help he's provided Pontius.

I'll go further....before that goal, the book on Pontius was one page...and it was on sentence fragment on one page:

Always cuts it back to his right foot

and still, he beat defenders regularly...this could be something of a game changer for him and if he can do it 2 or 3 more times will have defenders peeing their pants when they find themselves 1 v. 1 with him...

Pontius's goal scoring isn't actually that much of a surprise when you think about it. I don't know how much times my girlfriend and I are sitting on the quiet side, we see pontius crashing into the box on the left side, has an open shot and...does nothing, freaks out, passes the ball or just loses it. All he had to do was shoot the ball. Now that he is a foward, he knows thats what he has to do so now he is much more likely to rip a shot.

I didn't notice it until I watched the replay, but without Stephen King that was a 1-1 game.
First, he headed the ball back into the box for our second goal - then he headed one off the line at the end of the game to keep the clean sheet. I thought it was Perry Kitchen, but I went frame-by-frame and it was #20.

I also thought I saw Hamid go a bit lame on one save attempt around the 80-85th minute - but it could have just been time wasting, the camera didn't stay on him, and he took the goal kick.

Only 1 I can remember off the top of my head, but his 1st of 2 in Toronto last year was a nice left footed finish from the top of the box.

If people are more interested in the televisions at strip bars, it's probably not a good bar.
