This is not a rumor. It is going to happen. It is in direct conflict with the Strikers game v Atlanta at Lockhart that evening. EMail the Strikers F/O to see if they can make this into a Saturday double header or reschedule it for Friday or Sunday night. If it can't be moved or rescheduled I'll be at Lockhart @ 730PM cheering for the Strikers.
Hope they can move it for you guys. We got the Rowdies and NASL to move our game that was going to conflict with an upcoming USA international. So it is doable. Good luck.
Hearing the move is already in the works. Probably Friday 7/27 for the Strikers game. No worries. But I would be at the Strikers game too if it didn't get moved Doubleheader would be epic but since the Strikers are not in, or about to be in, MLS, that's not happening. Even then they probably would not allow a double header(which would be a non-MLS league game), they'd probably just play one of the big clubs(like Montréal playing ACM last year). At least SUM let the Strikers set up outside the Barça/Chivas and USA/Honduras games last year. Hopefully they do it again. They did not let them set up at the Mexico/Colombia game earlier this year.
I can't find a link for the life of me, but I know the Galaxy and Revs used to do those doubleheaders. Maybe not with international clubs, but with national teams. Nowadays they just have the MLS teams play the international clubs.
In '96 or '97 a Mutiny game was paired with a USWNT game. I want to say the Fusion DH'd with a pair of national teams at least once in '98 or '99.
According to the Miami Herald, ticket prices through TicketMaster will start at $29.00 when they go on sale Thursday morning at 1000. These are going to be nosebleed seats, I'm sure, but that's a bit better than the $90.00+ price for the lower bowl sideline seats that has been mentioned on FB. If the Striker game is moved I might actually try to get a ticket for this match....
If SUM is controlling this game, and if Downs truly has done his job in getting some kind of relationship with MLS established, having the Strikers set up a booth at the stadium for this game should be a no-brainer. I mean, what reason could SUM have for not allowing it? Can't understand why they rejected it for the Mexico/Colombia, unless they had some excuse like it's not a club match, so we're keeping any kind of club activity away from it. But this Milan/Chelsea matchup just screams for Strikers to be there trying to get their brand in front of more soccer fans in this market and hope that at least a small percentage of them would be willing to give us a try. And it is absolutely the right move for the Strikers to move their game to either Friday or Sunday. You'd hope that fans would be loyal and put club over international intrigue, but I'm afraid a good number would not. Ok, going to stop now before I start rambling about advertising and budgets and finding a way to get bigger crowds......
Check the Strikers site. The July 28th game v Atlanta has been changed to July 27th @ 730PM at Lockhart...... Now we need to get ULTRAS discounted tickets for the Saturday game so all Striker fans can support the sport at both events...
They had to. If the NASL lets the folks in Tampa/St Pete do it for the USA v Barbuda & Antigua game then the same should be done for our conflict. Not a big deal, really. It just give the fans an extend week-end double header. The good times are rolling for 2 days. Now, if Ed can get us a good price in a supporters section, nose-bleed or not, I'm in.... Here's hoping for a sell out for both games.
