Like I said, I don't mind it to start with, but as soon as you're up a man and down a goal, you have to change the tactics. Stretch the pitch and make the most of your man advantage. Collapsing the field just makes it easier to defend.

FWIW, the other thing I like about this team - we're far more watchable than we've been in ages.

No disrespect to Steve Nicol, but from an entertainment/likeability standpoint, there's no comparison between the first 10 games of this season and the last few years of the Nicol Era.

As I said before, we've got seven of our next nine at home - time to make up some ground.

Agreed. There was no need to follow through and upend the RSL player after he had made his pass. Easy call.

Where the ******** is multiquote? :(

He saw a straight leg, studs up, flying lunge towards an opponent. While Cardenas attempted to pull out, he still made contact. The RC did not surprise me. The league is trying to modify player behaviour.

The fact that Cardenas is small and light, not carrying much momentum, does not seem to figure into the equation. :(

Change of mind. I watched the reply on the DVR. Not only did Cardenas get his boot down, he was stepped on by Olave.

Good thread in the ref forum. Even MassachusettsRef thinks the ref got it wrong.

People keep talking about his left foot, the magical left foot or left peg but i have seen better crosses from Sene and Nguyen. Tierney for all his left footed glory loves to launch 50 yard passes to the opponents defenders. He is a hard worker but what he lacks in speed, passing and defending far out weighs the 2 or 3 crosses a game that he may connect on or put in dangerous spots. I think I counted 3 or 4 time he passed hospital balls to guys and lost possession. UPGRADE DURING THE SUMMER PLEASE!!

Barely or not, why take a chance of giving up a free kick 22 yards out in front of you goal? Stupid move on Soares. On the goal, Shalrie was left with two men. It was a perfect ball in and he got beat because he checked off an unmarked Espindola? to mark Sabario. There is blame all around here, lets not lay it all on Shalrie.

Why do you choose a man in that situation. Get focused, eye on the ball, and get to it unless your goalie calls you off. Shalrie is paid DP money to be an enforcer. Saborio didn't stay in place, he moved. If Shalrie was fit or had form, with his size, he disrupts that at least. It's in your 6 yard area.

Encouraging game. For the first time in a number of years we went into Salt Lake and actually competed. At the end of the Nicol era the strategy was to try to limit the humiliation.
Rowe has immense potential but Cardenas is getting more accomplished for us on the field of play right now.

Agree with much of the above - my own 2 cents:
    • the ref...Revs more fun to watch by a lot than last year, etc.
    • Like Mike, I appreciate Tierney more than most, but we're not going to challenge at the top with CT starting. The person who has relatively speaking gotten a free pass is Alston. He has more physical tools than CT, and he has heart, but at his age and level of experience, his lack of connection to his teammates is disturbing. With the emerging Heaps style of have the mids pinch in and combine, it's increasingly important that the outside backs be able to keep the ball, and get forward effectively. KA is a long way from doing this. I have to think that the clock is ticking for Kevin.
    • Another one whose mistakes are rarely pointed out is Soares. It wouldn't bother me, except that he gets a lot of hype, which to me he hasn't earned yet.
    • Someone is bound to say that was a lucky shot, or meant to be a pass, but Brettschneider's goal was a golazo.
    • The better we do, the more people will need to remind themselves that we are rebuilding. This means giving kids who have buckets of potential - Rowe, McCarthy, Cardenas, Soares, Fagundez - room to grow. You can trot out the line about how having potential means you suck now. I'm OK with that. It's not about this year.
    • SJ and MR are both getting to an interesting point n their careers. Whatever loss of mobility they are experiencing, they still have to be positive forces on the club. I confess I'm intrigued by the idea of SJ as a centerback, but I think he does more of the heavy lifting than he is given credit for on this board. It's just that he isn't an attacking CM, and really never was.

If you appreciate what he does then you appreciate unforced turnovers and consistently being skinned by opposing attackers

It's only a matter of time. I'd bet he's given up the most goalscoring chances, and sooner or later teams will start finishing them off.

Very true. When you don't tell your players to aimlessly hoof the ball down the field like they did in the good ol' days in Britain, actual soccer happens.

Not going to argue what Tierney does at this point, but he is the one that really plays the long ball from the back for us, dead or live. You have to have this as well as playing your way out to give us balance. By definition, whoever tries this the most will usually have the most turnovers. It's not the safe option, but it is often the right choice and saves us from other players turning over the ball deep in our end. He would not do it if Heaps did not like it. Beckham turns over the ball as well.

Yes, exactly, many times he will just boot it instead of picking out a short option. If you're going to play it long somebody better be wide open or making a run into space, unless you're under extreme pressure from the opposition. We don't have Peter Crouch in our team so booting it up for a standing target is never going to work. Many times neither of those two things will be happening but Tierney will launch it anyway.

As for essentially comparing Tierney to Beckham, yikes. The difference is that Beckham has extraordinary technique, and is capable of actually finding his target when he hits a long ball. Almost every single Tierney long ball doesn't find its target, and either flies over the persons head, goes straight out bounds, or is easily defended by the opposing defender. It doesn't work and turns the ball over unnecessarily all the time, if you pay close attention to it. If a long ball is to be played, a much more effective way of doing it would be for Tierney to play it infield to Benny first, since he's a far superior passer of the ball.

I think theRevs needs to play a little more physicial, but not stupid fouls or dirty plays especially when we play defense free K or corner K. Also, do not wait for the Refs 'decisions. I mean just look that the way Saborio took down Lozano n scored the RSL 1st goal when every one stopped playing. we are so "gentle"

Heaps acknowledged this point by suggestimg certain players need more "bite."

Hey, I'm an RSL fan just stopping by to share my thoughts. It sucks that the game was so heavily dominated by the officiating. It seems to be a trending thing between the two teams for there to be some drama during their games against each other.

I don't really know much about Brettschneider but his goal was pretty awesome.

I think your team is headed in the right direction and I like watching NE games when I can. I don't think we play again for the rest of the regular season so good luck with your upcoming games!

I'm not following what you mean. Watch the replay. It was obvious that the Revs were set to mark on the play, but RSL ran a set play with Saborio picking/shoving Lozano out of the play, and then coming in late. Shalrie marked the guy going inside, probably assuming Lozano had the guy on the outside run, since that was how they were set up. He did see the ball, and he jumped for it (someone here said he didn't, but he definitely did), but he just missed it. I agree that he hasn't been doing as well in midfield, but I don't see him as being at fault here. The runs started before the ball was kicked, so he had to pick who to mark before the ball was kicked, are we blaming him for not having ESP?

It's funny, the RSL color guy (that's what they have on MLS Live) even said that there wasn't much contact on by Soares on the foul, but Espindola sold it by going to ground. Listening to his commentary on that and the 2 red cards, I have to give the guy credit for his objective 'non homer-ness'.

Can we add Brettschneider to this list of people we should give a chance to develop? Yes, he didn't do great in his first match, but how so many people could could hate a young player so much after such a short time shocked me, it almost seems like some people want him to fail.. He's not a vet brought in to lead the team, he's a young kid who was thrown in at the start when he should have been with the reserves still developing, because the team didn't have anybody else. This is why young players are brought along slowly, because they're more likely to fold under pressure. When my brother talks about '86, he doesn't talk about Buckner, he talks about a young Calvin Schiraldi, who'd only come up that summer, wilting under the pressure in game 6, allowing all those guys on. I'm not saying I predict BB will become a superstar or anything, just asking to give the kid a chance to grow.

Though after the goal, hopefully people will be more likely to let him continue to try to play soccer. Seriously, I'd think that strike has goal of the week potential. I haven't seen many highlights of the other games or anything, but were there any other goals as good?

    Absolutely.

That goal has goal of the month potential, let alone goal of the week. That goal would have been a damn good goal in EPL or anywhere else.
