Yikes. Where to start... I love Shalrie, but I'm ready to see an extended trial of him at center back. He's just taking too many touches in the middle of the field and giving the ball away too easily. I'm not a Chris Tierney hater, but I thought he had a really tough game. Thought both red cards were harsh. Don't think you can question the effort tonight. Thought they played hard, right to the end. Diego is too unselfish. We've got something like seven of our next nine at home. Time to make up some ground.
any chance it gets over turned on review -- I can't imagine how anyone watching on replay would think it is a red. as for Cardenas starting, who sits? Who are your top four midfielders right now?
Heh, we've been calling for a while for the team to sign a DP, now they sign one, and this we're not happy. Some would call that irony, while others would just call it typical Revs. Though the 2nd goal wasn't really his fault, imo. Lozano got picked/shoved by Saborio, so Shalrie was left with 2 to mark, he picked the guy on the inside run, and the ball went to the guy further outside.
This team is starting to show real promise. Despite all the usual bitching by the "experts" on this Board about various Rev players the human beings who play for the Revs are showing real character and in my "non-expert" opinion have the potential to collectively round into a side that will be able to hold their own against any team in the league. IMO, against all logic the Revs played well enough to have come away with a point. I've sworn off making any comments about the Refs but the noise in my head is screaming for me to say something about the absolute horrid job that *************** did tonight. Oops--about tonights Ref: no comment
I agree that Rowe should sit, but who or how many do we play in midfield? It seems that the choice is between Nguyen, Benny, Shalrie, Simms and Cardenas. I'd say that Shalrie is on the worst form of those 5, but I can't see him sitting. Cardenas may have to sit next game, though I can see a chance of it being overturned, as was said, even the RSL announcers said it was totally undeserved. Listening to them made the call even more bothersome. They also mentioned that the ref has now done 9 games, and given 6 reds. He's over his head in MLS, and I hope we don't see him do a game for a while. Would the Revs have to appeal the red though, or would the disciplinary committee look at something like that as well? I believe I've read that teams can protest as many calls as they want during the season, as long a they win the protests. I think it's, if you get 2 protests denied, you can't protest again. I'd also like to say, I think Diego earned more time as well after the havoc he caused tonight.
Yep the Refs tonite are terrible. Despite the fact that the Revs players are exhausted after 2 earlier games. I think we play better and should play 4-5-1 line-up when we play away game and play 4-4-2 @ home
If you're using a 4-4-2, I'd start him over Rowe at RM. Besides the LA game Kelyn really hasn't played well at all besides some occasional good combination play. And Lozano appears to be a better CB than McCarthy too. One question I have is what's the deal with Polak? I don't think he's even made the bench for quite some time now, and he can't really be worse than Tierney can he? He looked pretty competent that one game he came in for.
The only time a card ever gets overturned if it's a case of mistaken identity. Like if a player punches an opponent and the ref gives the red to the punchers teammate thinking he threw the punch. The league would have to power to overturn it, but they will never go against referee discretion. Unless of course, it's adding on suspensions, like with Shalrie.
Tierney has an offensive upside (crossing and free kicks) which is why he starts. The only other player competent on the left offensively is Sene.
And yet, how many goals has he given up? The answer is pretty close to zero, in spite of the fact that teams have repeatedly attacked his side. And by goals given up, I mean any ball that's been played through and sent from his side. Anyway... my judgment on tonight's game is a good showing by the Revs. Let's face it, third game in eight days, at altitude, with their B side? A victory wasn't really in the cards, but they kept it close and fought hard at the end. Of course, the ref managed to butcher the game, which makes analysis difficult. And I don't think anyone would question that RSL was the better side. So call it a moral victory and leave it at that.
Our main problem right now is the fact that Feilhaber, Rowe, and Cardenas seem to play better in the center than on the wing. If Shalrie is untouchable in the center, then we will never have any room for these guys in a more suitable position.
Having been one of the few Revs fans at the game tonight, let me tell you it was painful to watch Tierney play back there tonight. Can't say anything positive about that. We did score the best goal tonight, unfortunately we lose the way we alway have, leaving someone unmarked on set pieces.
Really like Cardenas. A lot of skill on the ball. I would start him over Rowe. The foul by Soares that results in a direct kick from a dangerous spot reminded way too much of the Dallas game. In both cases the foul (or contact) did not need to happen. I would like to see one game with just one of Shalrie or Simms starting. Just to see how the team looks. I know that this will happen by circumstance over the course of a season, but I think this could make the Revs even more dangerous... and probably a little more exposed? Just want to see. The team is fun to watch again, much better than last year, and might even challenge for the playoffs, but I feel like this is the bridge year. There is a really good young core here.
(The team is fun to watch again, much better than last year, and might even challenge for the playoffs, but I feel like this is the bridge year. There is a really good young core here.) This is deifinitely true. At the very least, the team cut a lot of dead wood from last year and can compete in every game. Things could go either way, but there is potential with this group if managed correctly.
The Cardenas red was hilariously bad. Perhaps the worst red card I've ever seen. Olave actually stepped on Cardenas' ankle. If the Revs don't challenge that, they might as well never challenge a red. Absolutely terrible. That said, we were up a man and still refused to play with any width. We started with a 4-3-2-1, which makes sense if you want to play defensively and stuff up the middle. When you're down a goal and up a man, you have to spread the field, attack the wings and try to score off a cross or open up space at the top of the box for a shot. We didn't do that. We still tried to play through a packed middle. RSL's first goal was a handball. Their second was an obvious obstruction against Lozano. Despite that, we still can't defend any long ball, whether a cross, corner, or FK. We're playing too defensively rather than attacking it and clearing. That's why we get beat to everything in the box. I'd have been ok with a 2-1 loss before the game, but after watching RSL play pretty terribly and the Revs go up a man, I feel like we dropped an easy point and we had a good chance at 3. Oh and Espindola is one of the biggest twats in MLS. Not quite Lenhart level of doucheness, but very close.
That really better be turned over, and Rowe starting over Cardenas is a bad joke. But, I have to say, Heaps looks to have a good feel for his players, so I am starting to give him some benefit of doubt. I have ragged on Shalrie as much as anyone, but his suckiness has subsided a bit. It is starting to look like he came back completely out of form (very unprofessional), but is starting to play himself into game shape. I still think you need him on the field, mbecause he gives you a spine. The game against DC was sketchy for his absence. He does need to stay back to both conserve his energy and because his skill set flourish there. He allowed Saborio to score the second goal by not jumping for the ball, but who do we bring in for Shalrie. Perhaps Lozano in CB, and McCarthy in midfield, Shalrie off the bench? I am not convinced. Shalrie plays pretty aggressively even if he makes errors, and that has intangible benefits on the other guys. Rowe needs a time out. IMO. Looks increasingly lost at this level. If Bretteshneider grows in confidence, I would like to see Moreno earn his way back in.
Sorry, you keep your eye on the ball and own it anywhere near you in the box, unless one of your guys call you off.
Count me as one that appreciates what Tierney does. Yes, he gets burned, but his runs, sweet left foot, growing confidence, intelligence give us a lot.
I think I read Heaps purposely set-up 4-3-2-1 Christmas tree formation to save legs for the week we have had, and I guess altitude.
