Agreed. Drives my nuts when the pundits come out with their best and worst transfer columns and this is ignored. The fee is one half of the equation. Total cost matters.

over the past two seasons, Dempsey has 28 goals in league play. the downside is that he has far fewer assists than goals, which could reinforce the fact that he doesn't distribute well, but if you look at other players I don't think you would come to that conclusion.

For example, Luis Suarez -- who has scored 11 league goals -- has 5 assists, which is approximately the same proportion. Van Persie has 26 goals and 12 assists.

Calling yourself "Deuce" if you're some kind of rapper is about what anyone would expect. 50 Cent was taken.

First of all Stilts I'd like to say congratulations on your championing of Dempsey and that most of us have egg on our face after the season he has had.

Whether we would be better off right now with Suarez and Dempsey is debatable. They have respectively the 3rd and 4th most average shots in the league, the problem with this is that both players would not have the same freedom to be so greedy infront of goal. One, the other or maybe both would take a dip in the goals scored if they played in the same team.

    thanks.

it's a little self-serving of me to rep your post, but i am a self-serving wanker, as is well-documented.

the thing about Dempsey is that he has an eye for the ball -- something he shares with Chicharito -- and he seems to be at the right place at the right time A LOT. people say that he wouldn't have that much success at Anfield because he wouldn't have so much of the ball, but he's a scrappy guy who gets garbage goals and headers. he's more than adequate with the ball at his feet, IMO. but he isn't going to create shots the way Suarez does. not many can.

the question i have is whether there is room for him and Gerrard on the pitch at the same time. i think Dempsey can play wide, so i would say yes, but that would be of some concern. of course the same is true for Gerrard, though it's not his favored slot.

but I have no doubt that he would have been a better acquisition in the short run than Carroll. oh, and he's played 90 minutes in all 36 matches this season, plus a bunch of Europa League action. he's a durable player at his peak (29).

I think you could stick Deuce on the left and do alright. You've got a very tall guy at left forward so you want an excellent crosser on the right side to send balls to the far post. But left wing has always been a position that has allowed for a bit of creativity. But then we still need a right winger to put the ball in. Plus I think we could use a DM with teeth.

One guy just as skilled as Deucemeister but a lot bigger, younger and faster is Balotelli. Yes, he is a headcase, but with Suarez on the team, who would even notice? Plus, as we can see there is no guarantee Carroll is going to pan out. You can't dump him from the side yet because he was too expensive. Every high-priced purchase gets one grace year to foul things up. But if he has four goals for 2012-13, then at least we'd have Deuce or Balo to put next to Suarez up top.

I think Deuce has 2-3 good years left. He should be fine for the World Cup, but once you hit 31 you start to slow down. That will be it for him and Donovan, the last hurrah.

Plus, I put Deuce on the left for us in Football Manager and it worked out fine.

    Mention of Football Manager [x]

    P.S. Just joking, I don't actually play Football Manager.

Wanted to give you guys a heads up to the latest Swiss Ramble article. In case you're not familiar, he is a top football finance blogger (he is a gooner but articles are very neutral). The article covers the latest financial statement by LFC. Apologies if this post is not completely on topic, just couldn't make out a better thread for this.

Did someone really just compare Suarez to Balotelli? Are you fricking joking?

Balotelli's penchant for acting a like a completely moronic nutter is MORE than enough to dissuade me from ever wanting to see him on the pitch at Anfield--except when getting sent off for another team. He may have an eye for goal but his antics make him unfit for Liverpool. If for some crazy reason Liverpool execs decided to splash money on him, I'd throw up in my mouth.

Well, bringing in Balotelli would certainly take the limelight off Suarez. Not sure Luis could approach Mario's level of pure idiocy even in his worst hot-headed moments...

Other than this consideration, no thanks. Don't wish to become the 1980's Raiders of English football.

No one's antics makes them unfit for Liverpool. The rest of the world, yes. But not Liverpool.

It's not that negative to be honest. Take away the stadium expenses(49.6m) and we are breaking even and do not sack a manager or coaches(8.4m) this season and we are making a slight profit just behind Arsenal. And while the Net spend of £35m last summer look excessive to our league position when you take into consideration the last 4 years of transfers it's actually a net spend of £23m or under £6m a season. Suddenly our league plunge looks slightly understandable.

The single biggest concern is our wage bill. As the relegated teams are included in the list clearly it is last years wage bill. Swapping Torres and Babel for Suarez and Carroll must have slightly lowered the wage bill. We swapped 10 first team players for 7 and in some cases like Kyrgiakos for Coates the player replaces would be on lower wages.

So in the meantime, Milan got Aquilani on loan. Now that Mobtolivo is free, why pay any money at all for Aquilani? Sorry, you've proved my point for me.
All we need for the farce to be complete is for Fiorentina to get Aquilani on loan ...

    What point?

Milan are going to be in the market for more than one midfielder this summer. Flamini, Van Bommel and Seedorf are all out of contract. Merkel they are stupidly allowing to leave. Abrosini and Gattuso are both 34 and played next to nothing this season while Prince Boateng is constantly injured.

Had he not got injured they would of signed him. If the intention was to just use him for one season why bring him recently in 2 games in the 85th minute when Milan were winning. Why waste his appearances bringing him on earlier in the season when 2-0 up against Victoria Plzn or start him twice against CL minnows Bate Borisov.

Its no conspiracy he was injured for 3 months and has failed to play like he did earlier in the season. Aquilani had to prove he was good enough for Milan in their eyes he failed the task.

Juve also didn't con us. Aquilani, and Juve, was average last season. While Pirlo was a bosman its fair to say a player of that reputation would of had a big signing on fee and is commanding a £4m contract. They choose to give a 32 year old a £13m contract than sign Aquilani.

The suggestion that Juve choose the cheaper option is preposterous as they spent 94million last summer.

Are Fulham too small a club for their own forum? Perhaps you could start one to talk about all those trophies they've won.

I can understand people saying Dempsey is not good enough for Liverpool.

A Champions League and Prem League title chasing Liverpool? I dont think he's good enough. But we are at least 2 years from that.

Dempsey could help us get back into the top four.

But I think he's probably not worth it now because they will be asking crazy money for him.

It's hard to play a 4-4-2 without good wingers. Put Dempsey on the left, then we need someone more industrial on the right. Leave Carroll up front for another year and pray. Two good wingers and we'll have an extra 15-20 goals next year.

I think almost every team in the league would have a place for the elected 4th best player of the year. The guy can play. Has shown it time and again. He scores consistently, so that's already an upgrade over anyone on our team.

Carroll is turning into a wrecking crew and has a good scoring record of late. He's really grown up in the past few months.
