Mostly I just needed a break.

There are still some good solid posters here. Sometimes the noise-to-signal ratio can be problematic.

When I watched the recorded game, I saw Landon walk up to Keane before the PK and I'm pretty sure he said "I want you to take this." It seemed to me like it wasn't already decided that he would take PK's.

Were you watching the HD or SD feed?

I tuned into the Direct Kick HD channel for the game and got the KDOC feed.

Just so I understand: Lopes is not accountable for defense (which is his job) because he contributes so well to offense. Except, when the offense doesn't do that well, it's not his fault, either.

I'm starting to get the impression that many here have simply decided that our defense is hopeless without Omar anyway, so we may as well plug a guy in there we know is a liability and just hope he helps us outscore our opponents. Saturday's result should be a good enough example of why this strategy is folly.

I haven't seen anyone take that position. Which is good, because it makes no sense.

Here is my take on the situation:

Our defense is sub-par, and we have a plan to fix it. The rookie and the vet weren't working out, so Lopes was brought in as a short term fix to provide size, physicality, and an offensive threat on set pieces. So far, I think he has done much better than the vet, and maybe slightly better than the rookie. When Leonardo is healthy, he will likely earn the starting job and be paired with whoever is the best fit for him, likely AJ if he continues to play like he did Saturday. When Gonzalez is healthy, he will start and all will be right with the world. It is a long term plan, but it is a plan.

Our offense is not scoring like it should be. If we scored 2 goals against KC and 2 goals against Dallas, we would have an additional 5 points and be in 3rd in the West, 4 points behind RSL (currently 2nd) with 3 games in hand. On paper we have the most dominant offense in the league: one forward who has scored 160+ goals in the English Premier League, one forward who contended for top goal scorer in MLS 2 seasons ago, a midfielder who has led the league in goals and assists, and a guy who apparently looks really good in underwear. The other 2 players on the pitch, Juninho and Magee are no slouches either. But the ball isn't going in the net when it needs to. What is our plan to fix this?

Ah, the SD. That explains it.

    Thanks for the help!

When we brought Lopes in Arena clearly said it was a "short-term solution." I thought it was kinda mean and harsh. Watching him over the last 3 games it's evident Bruce knew what he was getting and he was only being brutally honest. Like others have said, he has his idiotic moments, but also adds a physical presence in the back.

He's a short term solution. A big, physical athletic band-aid covering our defensive wounds. The reality is, we won't be solid defensively until Omar comes back. And thats a short term thing too. He wants to leave to Europe. It'd be smart to invest in an actual long term solution soon..

That aligns with Landon's comments after the game. He was trying to get Keane in the scoring column for the sake of Keane and the team. I'm sure he did this knowing Keane is (as someone else put it) THE man for the Irish national team. It's not like he normally muffs PKs.

However, when you are 30 out of 33 from the spot for the Galaxy, take the damn PK. Better for the team when they've got the three points.

    Re: Bovo

Personally I try and focus on the real great discussions we have here about our team. I go and read the threads from other teams that we play, and they are (in general) nowhere near as robust as the posts we have here.

There are some great folks here having great discussions - focus on that and put the others on ignore. Makes your life better.

Just wanted to compliment our posters.

EDIT: Could also be that without you folks I'd have a grand total of 0 folks to talk to about the Galaxy up where I am. :(

Of course Lopes needs to be held accountable. He made a giant error. His first job is defense before we consider him on offense for anything. His physicality does help with defense - he DOES have some benefits in addition to the brainfarts. In particular when combined with AJ.

I also don't think our defense is "hopeless" without Omar. But it's also not the defense from last year.

With Lopes in we have not lost. Bruce has decided to play the guy we traded for over the rookie in his judgment.

The only other option is Meyer (right now), we all don't think Boyens is the answer. You can make a case for Meyer as others have. But I don't think anyone is saying we cannot hold Lopes accountable. It's just a question of who you think will make the fewest mistakes and who you think the better partner for AJ is.

I think Bruce likes Meyer enough that he will play Meyer when he can. But I think you have to be a little careful with putting the kid out there. Like you'd treat a young pitcher in baseball or a young quarterback. You want him to make mistakes and learn from them. Not make a bunch of mistakes, give up goals, lose games, and lose confidence. Lopes, on the other hand, Bruce isn't trying to develop. He'll try and coach him into the system, but if he goes out there and self-destructs, so be it.

I needed a break from some of those first Galaxy performances this season. Cadaver, are your posts noise or signal?

Looking back with a few hours since the game I think we got a good result taking into account how many chances that were clear we missed. Normally we miss a game. If you told me we would miss a penalty and then give a horrific one away and still come out with a draw I would take it. So I am taking it and looking for more improvement from the squad.

Mostly noise, I guess. I like to think of myself as "part of the problem" not "part of the solution."

I think that's what Bruce Arena has been instilling in the team this season. I'm just waiting for him to stop and say, "Strike that. Reverse it"
