The thread to argue who deserves the most coveted individual award in football. Both Messi and Ronaldo failed to reach the CL final while missing crucial penalties. Messi will probably break Gerd Muller's record while Ronaldo will win La Liga and has a chance at a 3rd Golden Boot. Both players will have 60+ goals. Ronaldo has the Euros to still set himself apart.

Fernando Torres will win. He will score a hat trick in the CL finals and lead Spain to another Euro :D

I don't know who will win but it's no longer just between Messi and Ronaldo. My hunch is it will be a German but which one will depend on the Euros and CL final.

That is true. Messi might be facing an uphill battle though due to Ronaldo still having the Euro but i doubt Portugal will go far unless our "average" players can step up.

Normally that would be the case. But what Messi and Ronaldo have done in terms of performance will surely trump whatever happens in the Euros ... even if Portugal get eliminated in the 1st round.

It would be a travesty, in my eyes, for one of them not to win it.

If Ronaldo has a poor tournament and someone who's had a very good season themselves (Van Persie, Gomez) scores the goals that win the Euros, you could see a lot of support for them. They're probably going to need something approaching a Platini 84 type tournament, though, and even then it would still be somewhat difficult to not give it to one of Ronaldo or Messi.

There's a few "ifs" there and it is going to need something of a perfect storm, but it's not out of the question.

Gomez has almost as many CL goals as Messi this season and Bayern were in the Group of Death and still went further. Although he kind of sucked yesterday, if he scores in the CL final and wins the golden shoe or whatever its called at the Euros, he will be favorite IMO.

25 goals in 32 matches. Although Huntelaar also has 25 which takes away from that achievement a bit.

25 in 31. But I don't think he takes PKs.

    I guess 25 it is then :D

Pretty impressive in all competitions. Let's see what happens in the CL finals and the Euro.

It's too early to start the discussion at 1/3 of the year.

Gomez has to get into the starting lineup first. ;)

Why would it be a travesty, neither one could carry their team past a less-than-stellar rival.

LOL, who amongst the current crop is even capable to match Platini's Euro84 performance? I guess the only one could possibly be Iniesta, although he's fettered by the way Spain plays so it won't happen.

Both Gomez and Huntelaar are second-rate, that's like saying Valdano should have won Silver Ball in 1986.

    Let's be honest.
Am I the only one who thinks it would look out of place to vote for a player with Gomez' ability - no matter how much his TEAM manages to win - over CR or Messi?

And why Gomez of all people? Just because of his fancy looking goal stats? He isn't even the best player/driving force behind either Germany/Bayern.

The Ballon d'Or is for 'the player who has performed the best over the previous calendar year' for 'the player who scored the most goals on the team which won the most titles'.

I know, not too many. Depending on the Euro, it could be Robben, Ribery or Iniesta. Since rest of the world is eligible now, Neymar if he wins the Libertadores has a shout at it too.

Yeah, Gomez winning it would be beyond surreal.

I doubt whether I should bring this up but Huntelaar scored exactly the same amount of goals as Gomez and needed fewer chances/shots as well.

(but I won't argue that he deserves a top three place in the Ballon d'Or, that's why I was doubting)

Sorry but I don't see how anyone can look past the numbers and performances Messi and Ronaldo have put up regardless of them falling in CL SF.

What if Robben or Ribery win both the CL and lead their respective NTs to winning the Euro?

They would have to pull some really impressive performances at the Euros.

Agree ... Euro12 will be the deciding factor in this year. Both Ribery and Robben got a chance to show off in this competition with their team on the right track of good record.

Unless, no one would excel in this summer then CR7 would have the edge over Messi (again he would be in the Euro and not Messi)
