You can have 10 guys in an offside position, Oduro was in a passive position trying to get away from the ball, just take a look at where his face is pointing. That was a good goal. He did not put his body into your crap keeper, that would have been a foul for interference.

  2. I think we need a crash course on offsides here.

    1) Of course Oduro was offside. The easiest offside call ever. Even if he was lying down injured in front of the goalkeeper, he would have been offside.

    2) The second goal for Seattle was scored from an offside position. Johnson (of the green variety) was offside when the ball was passed to him.

The game was stolen from the Fire but you are barking up the wrong tree.

I'm sorry I must object on behalf of the Laws of the Game. A player is penalized for being offside if he is in an offside position and "Interfering with an opponent".

You may not like that it was offside but it is taught as offside from your basic level 8 class right up to FIFA instruction.

You're right, but the play is so close that I wouldn't expect it to ever be called at least not without just guessing so I think "Stolen" was the wrong choice or word.

  5. ?????

The linesman is in a perfect position to make this call and two Seattle players are in an offside position on the play. All he sees is Sean Johnson and two green. How difficult can this be to make?

The problem might have been the moment the ball was played. It was played on the far side of the linesman so he might not have seen exactly when it happened and then I think Paladini or Gargan was in front of the green guys in the next split of the second.

It is much different on the field than having an view from above. Being in the right position is great, but seeing in real time without a replay when the ball is played is quite difficult through a crowd. I'm saying you are correct that the goal shouldn't have counted, however its a very hard call to make so it's understandable that it was missed.

  7. I respectfully disagree. Johnson (the pink one) was sure Johnson (the green one) was offside. I know how difficult it is to make these calls having watched many a game from the sidelines.

You made me rewatch this goal again. To me it is clear. Going from the goal, it is Sean Johnson and just the green guys and then the blue players for a good half a second. But I think the linesman did not see the ball so he was not sure if to make the call or not. The camera is on the other side of the field so the call is very simple to make.

I also know that the directives to linesmen are that in cases of uncertainity they are supposed to let the goals count rather than call them off.

First Oduro would have had to been actively involved in the play. He was not. Secondly, I should hope you would know these rules better if you brought them up:
Interfering with an opponent: Preventing the opponent from playing the ball by obstructing the player's sight or intentionally distracting the opponent.

Oduro did neither, he did not stand in front of the GK, they passed by each other, the GK heading towards the ball he missed, Oduro away from it. You would have to discount almost every rebound goal with that ridiculous interpretation.

This is right after Pappa shoots, look at where Oduro and the GK are in relation to each other:

GK has clean line of sight, the ball is heading straight at Oduro, so he starts getting away.

As you can see Kennedy has a clear view of the play straight on, the angle you would want if you would be calling interference, and Oduro is clearly not obstructing the GK. He then moves away from the ball to stay passively offside.

Yes I agree...it's clear with a replay and a higher position. Being in the ARs position, at game speed is a different thing which you would know had you ever been in such a position in a professional game.

  10. Aha, I am also apalled at Oduro's behavior in front of the goal on Pappa's shot that did not count as a goal. In cases like this, you run like crazy either to the side or back toward the middle of the field. And he is just hanging around. The coach should talk to him about this. He took away a good goal.

Passing in front of a player is obstructing their sight.

That white blob is the ball, this is the exact moment Hurtado touches the ball from another angle:[IMG]

Johnson is raising his foot past the line, as the other angle shows Segares is standing past it.

Due to a thing called perspective a raised object from an angle will appear further afield to one positioned on the ground. Imagine drawing a straight line down from that orange foot, look at where that would be.

  20. I am sorry about milicz. He clearly does not know the rules of the game. I told him this after the match and he stubbornly refuses to read them (it will only take an hour or so - really).

I guess milicz argues that Oduro was not guilty of interfering with an opponent. I don't think this is even arguable but for others apparently it is.

However, Oduro was simply guilty of interfering with play. You cannot just hang around in front of the goal and jump around like this. This is definitely being involved with play (very actively, in my opinion). Like I wrote before, Oduro should have run immediately back toward the middle of the field or to the side.

Stolen? I admire your desire to try to see the positive even in the face of mediocrity but your game analysis is unrealistic.

Yes, at least we try to attack these days rather than bunkering right away but the sad fact remains that we simply cannot create quality scoring chances from the run of play. Pardo, Old Man Arne and Anibaba outshot our stating attacking players. That's sad. We only looked dangerous after Pappa came into the game and by then it was too late.

Part of this was because we lost the battle of the midfield and Seattle won most of the 50/50 battles. We simply could not keep possession in the attack. And we had the same old problems of Nyarko or Oduro getting the ball, speeding forward and having nobody in support of the attack and nobody crashing the box to pass to to create a quality scoring opportunity.

Seattle was perfectly content to give us corner kicks all night because they know we suck at them.

Meanwhile, our back line continues to display its deficiencies in speed and organization. Sega and Gargan can't seem to coordinate their sallies forward and on several Seattle fast break attacks, it was Logan Pause on our back line defending where one of our defenders should have been. Pardo had his best game of the season last night but that's not saying much. He still looks old and slow and useful mostly on dead balls.

As things are now, we'll beat the dregs of the league, get the occasional result against the other mediocre teams and lose to the good teams unless they decide to headbutt our players early in the game. The only reason this might get us into the play-offs is because we're in the suck-ass East. We need Rolfe to bring something new to our attack that is missing now, like another body in our opponent's penalty area. And finishing.

Nyarko needs to turn his energy into results. Sure, he sometimes looks spectacular but it is too often much sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Until we make changes to our attack, the great work our midfield usually does within 10 yards either side of the half line will continue to be wasted by a lack of good scoring chances and too many giveaways.

I'm not sure there's anything that can be done about our back line this season that doesn't involve getting new players. Maybe Old Man Arne can whip them into shape but so far, we've given up more goals with him in there than we did with Gibbs and that's a big disappointment, although Johnson has been at least partly responsible for three of the four goals we've given up to TFC and now Seattle.

Exactly. If Oduro was just in an offsides position passively, then his focus (as a striker with the ball in the box) is to get ON SIDE as quickly as possible. Look how far he is off in that picture. He was actively involved in interfering with their keeper.

The officiating is not the reason we lost. But it was horrible. There was one foul (I think Nyarko was the victim) where I looked up to see if a yellow would be issued and instead, there wasn't even a foul called. It was just inconsistent. Either call it tight or let them play, but don't swallow your whistle some of the time and make ticky tack calls at other times.
