No.... The way Chelsea are playing right now it is tough for anyone to get a result. Lets not forget that they still have to lock up a CL spot, and they need to win games to do that. They are completely revitalized under Di Matteo. Different team as a whole, and it seems that Nando is back. So I wouldnt really count on many teams other than the top 6 getting results against Chelsea right now.
Sealed their fate when they fired him. They might not have had a very good chance at staying up with him, but it was certainly better than without.
Spurs are probably the worst team in the Prem that doesn't play in Birmingham right now, and Rovers caught a huge break in Barcelona yesterday. Rovers have to go out and do it, but it's doable. The one thing is, that Wigan game is gonna be ********ing enormous.
I wasn't talking about one manager in particular, but judging on Bolton's style of play and performance I would have to say he shouldn't be in charge. But I don't know what kind of problems he's been facing.
i would say that coyle is a very good manager when it comes to using the typically sparse resources he has been given. they have had some awful luck with injuries this year, and a couple admittedly bad signings have really hurt them this season. In his first season managing english football, coyle took championship side burnley past fulham, arsenal, and chelsea in the cup. he did very well by introducing holden to english football, who has really been a revelation over there. i agree with you in general about overpaid, underperforming managers, but i'm not ready to put coyle (or mccarthy) into that list yet. mcleish, however...
Who cares about the cup? (McLeish won a cup) I'll take your word for it when you say Coyle is a good British manager. But really in the wealthiest competition of the world, guys like Coyle and McCarthy have no business. They have millions and millions to work with but they're incapable of having their teams play any better soccer than mediocre or even relegation candidates in non-UK leagues.
When you say "better soccer" are you referring to points yield? Because both Owen Coyle and Mick McCarthy outperform, say, Roberto Mancini in terms of points earned per pound spent in player transfer fees.
In terms of points per pound, I wouldn't know. How are we measuring this? How deep does Bolton debt run? How much are they spending on salaries? How many seasons are we looking at? etc.
Yeah...Bolton's style of play is a bit difficult to absorb, but if performance is measured in points, I think Coyle has received a greater return on investment in the £17 million he has laid out in transfer fees during two full years in charge than Mancini has with his £225 million. And I am ignoring salaries and debt. Just looking at fees for incoming personnel. Not even considering sales.
Bolton doesn't have "millions and millions" to work with. Not every team has the resources of City, United, Chelsea or QPR (i just laughed a little at the thought of QPR getting relegated)
For what it's worth there is very little correlation between Transfer fees and point totals, but there is a solid direct correlation between wages and points.
Actually, I was talking about you Bolton had a lot more success with Elmander up top. he opened up the field for everyone. Losing him and Holden, and slotting in Reo-Coker and Ngog has been pretty tragic. They played a nice brand of football last year, didn't have the personnel this year, mostly due to injuries. And that Spanish outside back is crap as well
Last year Bolton's estimated revenue was 72 million Euro (see stats & analysis section) making them one of the wealthiest clubs in Europe. Coyle does have millions and millions to work with. Compare Bolton or many EPL teams to Athletic Bilbao and Sporting Portugal or any of the Europa League's quarter finalists in terms of style and performance, and it makes you wonder if many of the EPL managers ever work on implementing a style of play, if they ever work on their positioning/possession game and why many of the players do not look like they belong in world's richest league. I think many of the EPL managers are far from being the world's best managers (coaches).
