I call bullshit! Old people always look at the past through rose-tinted glasses. Also did these people watch all the leagues around the world or just a certain 1 or 2?

Interesting comparison you make. My brother has told me something similar. He tells me all the time: "How can you say pro soccer is a legit sport when you see all the theatrics (faking, diving, etc.)?! It would be like me (my brother is a huge pro wrestling fan, by the way) saying that pro wrestling is a legit sport! So pro soccer and pro wrestling share one thing in common: the theatrics!"

To that, I can only respond to my brother by saying that I have to ignore all that crap in order to enjoy modern pro soccer.

And young people don't?! Some would argue that young people tend to believe that "history" began when they were born. Since young people have grown up watching pro soccer being full of theatrics, they believe that pro soccer has always been that way. But the historical facts (as shown above by other posters) clearly indicate that this belief is false.

Really, are the comments on this board now Historical Facts? I wish I had access to historical figures of the sport that can speak to the fact that Professional Football has been victim of theatrics but I don't, and one video is not a fact.

Anyway, we can sit here and argue about steroids, theatrics and all issues with Professional sports. In Europe and South America, fans only argue about the poor decisions that referees make on each game. And for better or worse it has become part of the game. In Argentina a couple of weeks back a linesman did not call an outside position, and a gol was score, later on the linesman admitted that he made a mistake, but the gol stand cost the other team a least a point.

Many in this country do not like tie games, and think that the Penalty shootout is not fared, but those are the laws of the game.

In 2010 Uruguay was about to be eliminated in extra time, and one of the players decided to act as a goalkeeper, the referee gave him a red card and gave the other team a penalty kick. The other team miss the penalty kick and lost on the shootouts. And many people in this country call Uruguay a cheater. But the rules are very specific, what the other player was not allow and he was red carted and the penalty was allow.

So we can go on for ever and criticized this game, which in this country is the norm, but it is still a professional sport.

lol I knew I would get that reply. NO, this is just the first example I found. This is how the game was played back then...Sorry if that proves you wrong and you're unable to admit it over the internet.

Comparing WWE wrestling with soccer is a bit riduculous...Really is a horrible argument by your brother. The winner isn't predetermined.

not just that, there's gamesmanship in every sport. stealing signs in baseball, flopping in basketball, holding jerseys out of view of referees in gridiron

Yeah I was going to say something along the lines of:

Well if you can draw similarities between faking injury in soccer and wrestling, then you could also draw similarities between wrestling and football..They're both sports that have massive steroid/HGH abuse and it's big guys throwing other big guys around. How you could watch it?

My brother's point was that both share in the theatrics (or what in pro wrestling is called "selling" a punch, kick, etc.), but not that in both the outcome is predetermined.

By the way, thanks for posting that video. Simply amazing footage! What pro soccer used to be in its purest and prettiest form!:)

    Gotcha.

Agreed, I hope soccer returns to the way it was meant to be played. Won't happen till they start handing out fine's/suspensions for diving. Yellow cards aren't enough.

    Oh, really?

    3 alleged counterexamples:

Serie B (especially the final round each season)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.S.D._Castel_di_Sangro_Calcio

    Greek First Division

    China Super League

    --

Some of the leagues in East and Southeast Asia are allegedly corrupted (by organized gambling rings) to the point where one can buy any desired result, including the time of each goal.

ok, so here are some examples, Giorgio Clinaglia, pass away last week, we the guy was a great forward. However, one of the reason why he never play again in Italy was due to some game fixing he was involved with back in the late sixties and 70's.

1978 Argentina junta pay the Perubian military so the peruvian national team would loss by more than 4 goals, they lost by 6.

All are allegations, but back in the 60's and 70's corruption was part of the game. Now, is easy to show one video with a well play game, but I can assure you that was not the case in all the leagues.

Now, England has done a good job in trying to keep a good and clean game, but there are plenty of stories about the theatrics of the game else where.

Sorry, that I do not have a video from other leagues, like in South America and other parts of Europe. Television was not available on every match played in South America, and the same case was in England, Italy, Germany, Spain and so on. If I am not mistaken, the first televise World Cup was in 1962, but do not quote me on that.

As a matter of Fact, if I am not mistaken, the first World Cup televised in the United States was the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Anyway, this is not a matter of being right and wrong, the Argument is that back in the all days there was no theatrics in the game, and for those of us who come from South America will tell you that this was not true. And even people from old Europe will tell you the same. For us this is common knowledge.

But, now at days if you do not have a video, well you are wrong, and I do not have sample videos from those days. However, I will make some calls to friends who do have access to old footage and see what they can come up to show you that Theatrics in Football is not a 21 Century thing.

Really funny. So next week is going to be a great week for both Barca and R. Madrid. They play each other on Saturday, and Barcelona has to turn around and overcome a 1 goal deficit at Nou Camp. Real Madrid has an extra day of rest and need to win either by one or two goals.

Is it going to happen? Is it Barcelona vs. Chelsea or ?

Barcelona did not deserve to be in the final. Not even close.

    Reasons:

    1. No "Plan B" against Chelsea's bunker. "Plan A" obviously did NOT work during the 1st leg, yet Guardiola did not try something different.

    2. Slow defenders who got burned by the counterattack, again and again, for 3 straight matches (including el Clasico vs Real Madrid when Oezil found Cristiano.)

The idea that Barca was the "best team in the world" is now dead and buried, perhaps for a long time, if Guardiola doesn't come up with a "Plan B" soon. Everyone now has the blueprint against Barca's "Plan A."

(No need for Chelsea to interview Guardiola for the manager's position now that Di Matteo has unmasked Guardiola as one-dimensional.)

    ==

Let's see if Bayern can take out the other clasico twin on Wednesday.

Barcelona was the "best team in the world" last season and is first in the five season UEFA coefficients but they aren't this season.

Newcastle United, who was last in the Champions League (including qualifying rounds) in 2003-2004, is currently fourth in the Premier League but that won't be good enough if Chelsea wins the Champions League and doesn't finish in the top four in the Premier League.

Remember this happened before, and their answer for a Plan B was Ibrahimovic - and that didn't work so they went instead with David Villa. Had he been there things may have looked a bit different.
