Before the season started, I had this one circled as a great chance for us to get points on the road. People were selling the Quakes, not giving them any hope, I even heard people nominating them as possibly the worst team in the league.

Oh how the start of the season has changed that. While LA is an obvious choice for "surprise team of the season" so far, I'd rather give my vote to San Jose. Their schedule suggests that they maybe haven't been really tested this year, but it isn't one filled with wins against Toronto (though they do have one).

They've beat NE, TFC (there), Seattle (there), and Vancouver
They've drew just last week with NY (there)
Their lone loss is to Houston at home

This is a test for both teams.
    Who is legitimate?
Is San Jose really a team to reckon with this year?
Is RSL really a top team in the league?
    etc etc

The XI I expect for RSL
[LINEUP-4-4-2]Espy, Sabo, Willy, Gil, KB, Vela, Wingert, Olave, Borchers, Tony, Nicky[/LINEUP-4-4-2]
Bench: Reynish, Schuler, Tanaka, Yordany, Steele, PJ, Bonfigli

Their pitch is a little more narrow and shorter than others so our formation could either kill us or dominate. We've had success there in the past 2 years, lets hope that continues.

The top of the West is up for grabs. A win puts us 5 points clear though SJ would still have a game in hand. A draw keeps us 2 points clear, that game in hand much more valuable now. A loss puts them ahead by a point while also still having that game in hand to separate further.

It's early in the season, so watching the table much isn't a wise thing to do. However, it is key to get points against those that look to be your immediate challenge. Surprising, that is SJ at the moment.

I'm rather curious as to what El-ahrairah predicts the SJ lineup will be...

Put me in the "SJ is for real" camp. This is a sneaky big match...in some ways bigger than last week's match was. Playing Seattle and NY straight up or better on the road are legitimate markers of success.

RSL has another chance to bank some points away for autumn in the next few days against SJ and whoever we play next from Dallas, or lose the ground we gained in LA and Portland.

I suspect the team is hungry and a little angry after KC. I expect a good showing. May god grant us health and the ability to stay between Wondo and the net.

I have been waiting for this thread to go up and see what kind of stupid name we get this week, anyone want to explain this title? How about something with a little respect for our opponent. RSL vs San Jose has simple intelligent ring to it.
Anyway looks like San Jose is dealing with some injuries so I like our chances.

I'd like to see Paulo Jr start this week. I'm not a coach or anything, but I feel the team plays better with him in there. Even though I feel that he is usually a step-behind, he has a stronger work ethic than Sabo.

Another big game this week, along with starting another three game in eight days(?). The start of the season has been a rough one, but so far RSL has handled very well.

The Reserve League is making me nervous for the future. Granted we have some young players and a mix and match of trialists/RSL-AZ players. Maybe I am reading to much into it but with a 0-4-1 record I am a little worried.

Side-note: Watched the Bayern Munich/Real Madrid today, lots more talent (obviously) than the MLS but I felt that talent was tainted with more settle flops and exaggerated flops than I have seen in the MLS.

An interesting thought. IMO - on the smaller SJ field we need Sabo in the air in the box. Not as much space for Paulo to run around in.

The UEFA game did have too much diving.

They are called the San Jose Earthquakes...
People want to rag on RSL for Euro posing, SJ fans especially (historically I've not seen eye to eye with them on these boards).

They named their team after a natural disaster that, in that area of the world, is known to kill thousands of people. I think my subsequent post gave plenty of respect to their squad.

    Also, lighten up Francis

I think Natural Disaster sounds better than Rocky Mtn Taliban.

I am praying for 1 point on this one. My heart was crushed last week (fortunately the milkshakes at Scaddys are really, really good).

A lot of people don't realize that San Jose expanded the field size last year, and now the field plays 115 x 74 yds. That's virtually the same size as Century Link (114 x 74), Crew (115 x 74), BMO (115 x 74), Gillette (115 x 75), BC Place (117 x 75), and Dallas (117 x 74). Jeld Wen is the only really small stadium left (110 x 70). The larger fields that are 5 yards longer, measuring 120 x 75, are Rio Tinto, Dick's, Livestrong, Toyota, PPL, Home Depot and Red Bull. Here's the Wikipedia page with the stadium info .

Before the change, Buck Shaw was closer to 110 x 70.

Anyway, for the game the Quakes will be without Bernardez and Salinas for certain, and both forwards who would normally partner with Wondo (Lenhart and Gordon) are questionable with hamstring injuries. You'll probably see a lineup similar to the one that played the second half of the NYRB match:

[LINEUP-4-4-2]Wondo, Stephenson, Dawkins, Baca, Cronin, Chavez, Corrales, Morrow, Hernandez, Beitashour, Busch [/LINEUP-4-4-2]

If Lenhart or Gordon are ready to go, they play up top instead of Stephenson. And you may see Opara instead of Hernandez on defense, taking the spot that Bernardez has been playing.

This should be a good match, with first place in the West on the line.

    yikes.

If it offends you so much, start the thread yourself, rather than whining about it after the fact.

    Good info. Thanks.

Funny thing is I have and it seems on each occasion I catch shit from Up or 15 for a boring title to thread. Truth is I really do not have a huge problem with this tread title, it was last weeks against KC that I thought was a little juvenile.

    Francis has lightened up:D

Dawkins, Wondo, and especially Chavez are what RSL needs to focus on in this game.
Each adds a different element to the game, together they could really break us down in the middle and defensive thirds. Our left side of defense and midfield have to be ready for the speed of Chavez and not get caught flat. I really wish we would have made a move for him in the offseason, the guy has loads of potential.

To counter that, Espy should be able to cause havoc on their right side of defense. Beitashour is not an overly talented defender, one that I think Espy can get in behind quite easily.

With the news that SJ has opened up their field more, I think starting Sabo is a must. Our team simply has more chemistry when he is on the pitch as opposed to PJ.

I can agree with you on that one.

In any case, I hope that el-ahriarah's (yeah, spelling's way off) line-up includes George Best on the wing. That guy is FANtastic.

Looks like SJ might be without Chavez due to his scissor on Roy miller over the weekend.

well that's because your usual title for the game thread is "RSL vs X team," i mean come on, you gotta at least have the date, time and P/I/P.

the RSL @ you suck asshole title was meant to be juvenile. i HATE that chant, its childish and ridiculous and i love to make fun of/bash it every chance i get. it just so happens that poor KC is lined up perfectly to be part of it.

anyways, back on topic. it will be interesting to see what lineup JK rolls out with the 3 games in 8 days again. does he throw schuler in there? or save him until midweek. how does he rotate paulo, sabo and espy? did steele do enough in his short time against KC to start over Tian, who didnt do much at all?

i thought i read last week that javi had actually trained with the boys, i wonder if he makes the 18 at all for any of these games.

I forgot about the midweek game with Dallas next week, I wonder if that changes things at all.

originally I bet Kreis thought he would rest some starters in this one (assuming healthy squad) play the first team in Dallas, then make the needed changes against a weak TFC side at home. However, things have really gone strange this season.

I'd use the best team possible this weekend at SJ. Yeah, don't want to get caught up in the table too early, but this is a key match for where this team stands. Also, if Javi and/or Ned are close enough to health, have them set to go on Wednesday as starters or, at the very least, per-determined subs.

Against TFC you roll out what is healthy and fit.
Anything less than 3 points in that game, even with reserves, would be a joke

Drew Moor hit Gil in the face and didn't get any post-game stuff...

With all the focus (rightly) on Marquez, I highly doubt Chavez gets anything

according to the recent rsl show, he didn't train with the first team on Tuesday but has been rehabbing and is questionable for this match.

I doubt he sees any minutes here
I could see him getting a sub appearance at Dallas

and according to james edward tweet:

i doubt we see them saturday, more likely wednesday if we see them this week. probably stick with gil and velasquez for saturday, maybe a late game sub for either grabs or morales. next wednesday i wouldnt be surprised to see grabs or morales get 30 minutes or so and maybe 60 minutes against TFC.

Well, I didn't think having a line up of the names of hurricanes, earthquakes and tidal waves would be all that funny, so I decided to call SJ the Earth-Quakes. Here is my line up:

[LINEUP-4-3-3]Scrouge McDuck, Roadrunner, Donald, Huey, Dewey, Louie, Launchpad McQuack, Duckman, Darkwing Duck, "Ducky" Mallard, Foghorn Leghorn[/LINEUP-4-3-3]

SJ did some last minutes trades to bring in their number one goalie, I say, I say, Foghorn Leghorn along with the Roadrunner up front. The midfield is anchored with Donald's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie. The defensive is anchored in the middle with Darkwing Duck and Duckman with Launchpad McQuack on the left and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard on the right (who was thought to actually be a duck and not the medical examiner from NCIS). The coach is Daffy Duck with that "wascally wabbit" Buggs as his assistant.
