The excuse that "MLS is a physical league" is getting tiresome.

Too bad Red Bulls dont go San Jose (I think) , the signs would have been pretty funny.

It doesn't matter if the quakes don't play the bulls again in the regular season, other teams will and every fan of every team should be outraged. Rafa Marqueuz is a disgrace to his club, country and the sport. It's a shame that he has done so much to detract from his achievements in the sport.

I propose a league wide protest, signs with catchy phrases, pictures, tifos, anything you could think of. My idea was to wear his jersey (or a much cheaper option: wear a white shirt and mark his name and number on it) and wear pig ears and snout to represent the pig he has become. The spotlight needs to be placed on him in an effort to get him out of the league or curb his antics. This isn't the first time he's been unsporting and has required disciplinary action.

Spread the word and make it happen everyone, this is the sport you love, don't let one washed up player ruin it.

I guess I view it as lazy. If Salinas isn't hurt, we probably wouldn't be talking about the american football tackle portion of this too much. I think the kick is probably blatant, but I'm not 100% sure either. I can see why people are pissed, that deserves a 3 game suspension. But punishing him for being a lazy prick on the "tackle" is a bit over the top to me. That's not really thuggery, just complete laziness which makes me as a fan of the club pissed off.

I don't think Chaves is making a play on the ball the minute he does the scissor motion. At that point it becomes a deliberate attempt to injure, and he was successful as Miller had to leave the game. The league is reviewing his tackle as well, and rightfully so.

I'm a Mexico fan and to me the kick looks intentional and deliberate. That being said, kick him out of the league? Ridiculous! Plain and simple. The league should punish him if the ref didn't at the time (which he didn't), but kick him out?

Some of you continue on this path even after the gif I provided of Dempsey doing the same thing... there wasn't a single peep about that. I'm not saying one thing justifies the other, but it just goes to show the hypocrisy amongst some of you.

Ruin the sport? I don't condone Marquez's actions, but there has been much worse in this league. How many legs and ankles have been broken throughout the years?

    You're being a tad hyperbolic.

And you have a valid point, but most other incidents aren't caused by repeat offenders.

Consider this: Rafa Marquez is one of the highest paid players in the league at around 4.6 million and when has he ever played or conducted himself like that kind of a player in his time with the Bulls or MLS?

I'm not claiming to know everything about Rafa Marquez but I've seen enough of his antics over the years that I honestly can't begin to understand why he plays when he looks lazy and passionless on the field.

Here are some incidents that come to mind:
-In 2002 world cup he head butted cobi jones
-In 2009 he went studs up into Tim Howard as he defended a cross
-He criticized his own teammate, Tim Ream (who now plays for Bolton) in a live interview
-He instigated the on-field antics at the end of their playoff game against the Galaxy
    -Then this most recent event

I don't have a problem with talented players coming here to showcase their skills and take on a new challenge, but I do have a problem when said player comes to the MLS and contributes nothing. He may sell some shirts here and there, but when a player is brought in because of his skill and experience and all he really ever does is resort to foul play (including his consistent wind slaps, I've seen many live that I wish I could have recorded), I'd say he is most definately tainting the league and by extension hurting the sport.

The man hasn't even had the decency to say anything about the incident, I come to expect more from professional athletes, especially those of his caliber. I think his best years are past him and he let's his temper control his game. Why play the sport when you've replaced passion with anger?

And to address the Dempsey kick, I'm not condoning that either, but he hasn't continued those same antics unlike Marquez.

Nice pictures...of one man holding up a trophy won by a TEAM. The videos and photos of players laying inert on the ground injured plus the phantom swat to the face were the action of ONE MAN. Thanks for playing...

    cry me a river...

    -he saw red in 2002.
    -winning the ball fail.
-Tim Ream is a shit defender most of the time.
-gotta spice up the boring MLS league playoffs
-blame the ref for not giving him a red. but since its the MLS...a yellow is perfect for everything.

You're letting the end result and personal opinion justify his actions.

-Getting a red for a head butt doesn't justify the head butt or make it a passable offence.
-A studs up challenge on a keeper isn't a winning ball fail
-Doesn't matter how you feel about Tim Ream or if he is the best or worst defender, no one should every publicly criticize a teammate.
-Again, doesn't matter how you feel about the playoffs, his actions were childish and reflected poorly on his club.
-Yes, the referee should have called it. The take down is an after thought, it's the kick that is the bigger problem.

I'm not trying to offend you or anything. I can see you're a Barcelona fan so maybe you got to see Rafa do some amazing things that completely go against what he's been doing as of late. I'm also not trying to act like a baby, I understand the sport is physical but that doesn't mean you have to try and maim your opponents.

My argument is that he really isn't doing anything positive for the sport anymore. He gets paid an awful lot of money and plays without heart. You may disagree and that's fine, but I don't really understand how you could.

huh? what? because a preference of a club clouds my judgment of a former player?? when did I become soccersonoma10??

sure it was dirty...but kickin him out of the MLS?? that has to be the most dumbest thing I ever heard from an MLS fan(s). getting physical or as you say "maiming" happens everywhere in the football world. shit happens and footballers get away with it like Mario Balotelli's awful tackles or Ashley Young's diving acts.

Let's take it a step back here. I never said anything about your preference in a club clouding your judgment, but if that's what you got out of what I said then that's on you. I was merely talking about you, as a Barcelona fan, might have seen rafa play differently than I have in recent years. I know him as a heartless player from what I've seen of him, of you've been following him since his days with Barcelona maybe you can rebute that or agree.

I don't care if he gets kicked out of the league, I want him punished and I want it to be a severe enough punishment that it curbs his antics. You're right, players get away with some crazy stuff on the field, but even Mario can't escape punishment over in ManCity. They are considering getting rid of him because behavior like that hurts the club and the league, that's the point. You don't need players like that and their actions can not be justified.

OK, I'm not surprised that tex mex did that, but I've watched a ton of his games and I've never seen that from him. Deserves a suspension. I've seen a few Rafa games, and he's usually pulling some pathetic bs (from a typical american pov that views injuring and faking as pathetic, that is).

I agree, kicking him out of the league is over the top, but really MLS needs to provide disincentives.

No one said anything about it because it's not even a kick, more of a push, and Dempsey doesn't have a history of acting like a jackass like Marquez does. If you want to, I'm sure you can find instances of many players making bad decisions, that isn't really the problem, it's the fact that Marquez does this crap over and over and is an embarrassment to the league and his team. Not to mention himself.

Do I think he needs to be kicked out of the league? Not really because there is really no way to do that, but he needs to sit for a while, probably a long while.

Rafa Marquez is a goon and an idiot with no class and anyone who defends his actions, not that you did, is also an idiot with no class.

I don't want Marquez thrown out of the league, RBNY should live and die by the stupid roster decisions they've made. Seriously, paying that much money for a CB/DM hybrid when there are perfectly effective guys domestically who can do the job? And then getting a 38 year old keeper DP last year? Find me a finisher, a creator or a flying winger. Or if you do get a CB, get someone big, tough and very fit because that's what you need in MLS from that position.

And as far as Marquez's dirty/aggressive play ... give me a break. This league (at the coaching level) worships thugs and hacks, and then they wonder why creative players get injured and every week the disciplinary committee is trying to cure the problem by treating the symptom not the disease.

And San Jose fans, please get off your high horse. Your team is just as full of hacks as everyone else in MLS. I can be honest and look at my team and recognize the "bad boys" on our roster that could learn a little restraint ... McDonald, Cruz, Santos, Hamid ...

Not only did MLS show contempt for the Quakes by not calling a clear PK but also the Committee only gave Marquez 3 games suspension & added an insult by suspending Chavez for one game. San Jose needs to hire an MLS insider as lobbyist to reverse the opinion of the club at the highest levels. MLS has clearly and repeatedly shown its bias towards Red Bulls in the past thru its tv schedule and other rulings in their behalf. MLS has also clearly and repeatedly shown its contempt for San Jose in the past by its rulings, tv schedule and other "dealings".

Oh Boo Hoo Chavez should have gotten a red card for that. It was from behind he missed the ball completely and scissored Miller to the ground. Miller end up leaving the game about 5 minutes later do to injury cause by that. Stop whining if Miller did that to Chavez you would be calling Miller a thug and saying he deserved the suspension.

How do we fans get Rafa Marquez thrown out of the league?

RBNY could have probably offloaded him to Brazil or Mexico in the off-season. In hindsight they should've let him go!

If Rafa keeps this up, then he'll get himself thrown out of the league.
