it's pumped over the PA before the opening kick, after goals, after the game, and sometimes at half right now. It's a bit of overkill, but it does get it going.

Whats interesting, though, is that when it starts organically (a couple times a game, usually) it tends to have a lot more noise to it, or that's how it feels.

Stadium wide chants have gone from nothing just over a year ago (honestly it was amazing to get Ole sang by more than the south end and 26) to now it being about 4 or 5 chants/songs the whole stadium gets in on.

did anybody stay around and see what they gave the "save of the game" to?
    it was freaking hilarious.

I'm convinced Jonny Steele is not a good sub if you have a lead or if you are looking to improve your defensive responsibilities. If you need offesnse, yeah, the guy is great. As for tracking back and possessing the game while the other team pressures you? Not the right player.

Also, Velasquez is the ********ing man. On my depth chart, based on the 5 games, he is right behind Javi, KB, Will, and Gil. Give me a good case for why he shouldn't and I'll tell you how much you're lying.

That's awesome. And even if they're pumping the song in over the PA, at least it gets the regular fans used to it and they soon begin to remember the words and want to participate. Sometimes ppl need a bit of prodding. Anyways, just wanted to note that RSL's fanbase is a really nice thing to watch and you guys have come a long way from the days of playing in Rice-Eccles. Granted your team won't be this good forever so I wonder if the fanbase will have matured enough to withstand the eventual down years.

I remember hearing that the management plans to only keep the current core together for one more season or am I misreading that. Seems a bit premature especially since they just re-signed much of those guys.

The Jazz have proven that once a fan base is installed, fans will stick around even if the team sucks. It might not be in the same numbers (17-18K/night) but they won't go to Chivas USA bad in attendance ever. (checketts won't allow the team to ever get that bad again, either)

This current core has been told they have 18ish months (includes a hopeful run in the CCL knockout stages) until they really start to move some pieces. Certain players like Rimando, Borchers, Olave, Beckerman, and Espindola seem to be stuck here permanently unless an offer comes that they/RSL can't refuse.

Really, it's hard to make a list of players that wouldn't be part of the core. People here like the throw the name Will Johnson out there. I, on the other hand, think he might be a staple with this team for quite some time. He is a Jason Kreis player through and through and I just don't see an offer coming in that would make it so he would leave. I could be way off on this one, though

And what if they qualify for the CCL again next season. How many changes could this team withstand then? Even the most positive changes could take time to allow for the chemistry to gel. I wonder what type of moves that they have planned. Is it a massive retooling or wholesale rebuilding?

It would be a shame bc they really have a team that doesn't blow you away with names, but they play very well together. And they were still just getting their chemistry right during thier title season. It appears that they've peaked right now. But from what you say it appears that their two DP's may be the ones on their way out. Could this be a cost-cutting measure?

they'll never lose "The Team is the Star" mentality so long as Jason Kreis is the coach. He won't and never will take on a player that plays for the name on the back of the shirt more than the one on the front.

RSL is actively looking for, developing, and signing young talent to groom. Go look at 2 of the serious nominees for ROTY this year. DeLeon and Cascio. Yeah, they weren't full grown RSL products, but RSL proved they had the eye for talent with these guys. DeLeon in particular looks to be a very RSL type player (lots of heart, loves to play, technically sound and confident, etc).

Velasquez, Beltran, Schuler, Paulo Junior, Yura Movsisyan, Robbie Findley, etc. RSL has shown, time and again, that they can find players that others overlook who turn out to be (especially in the last 2 players cases) guys that can be very successful in this league.

I have confidence in this group so long as Kreis and Lagerway are part of it. The day will come when one if not both move on, and that'll be the real test of how this team goes. Until then, I'll keep on the confident side of things and say that RSL can not only find decent replacement for key players, but find players that might even be better (Sabo for Findley, for example)

lastly, I think this team is far from peaking. We still aren't playing at the level we did in 2010 where we simply owned teams from 0-90. Maybe we aren't as good as that team, maybe we're better but slowly building. Peaking right now, though? Far from. One good game after a few mediocre ones at best isn't peaking for this squad.

there needs to be about 4 or 5 more of these where cRapid players either fall down after nobody touching them, play an open/no pressure pass out of bounds, or completely miss on a tackle.

I'd also like one of Espy handling the ball with the caption "The soccer gods hate you that much"

Now that you mention that, it seems that I've underestimated how many changes this team has already had to deal with. But it becomes a bit more difficult if you make a large amount of changes over a short period rather than constantly retooling. It just makes me wonder what they mean when they gave that 18 month timeframe.

As for peaking, I guess what I mean is that they were arguably won their title when they were only just starting to play their best soccer. They've been incredibly consistent since then, especially since they've been playing international games and had a deep USOC run thrown in there. Their level of play may have varied from time to time, but they haven't seemed to have dipped in a drastic way.

Yeah I have to agree that Kreis and Lagerway have become a great asset for RSL. And it was in no way apparent to me that this would be the case when they first hired Kreis. He was solid player but he hadn't had any seasoning as a coach before getting the job. He's been an amazing surprise to me. Perhaps I missed something. Then again, it's usually easier to judge a future manager when you've been in the locker room with them or shared the field with them.

Anyways, gonna pack it in, but hopefully RSL gets some silverware this year bc they deserve more than one title for their consistency. CCL will be a much more competitive proposition with the new setup, so it's not out of the realm of possibility and will be alot easier than RSL's last run was.

Totally, and I mean that semi-kindly. Between he and Steele I think I see - today - how much the rest of the midfield may have been hanging-back and covering for them (which the team did well against Montreal).

I'm not basing this on anything I've heard just my opinion, but you get a strong group of guys like RSL has and as their contracts start expiring it becomes very difficult to keep them all under the cap. My guess is that end of next year some contracts will be up and decisions based more on financial needs and not soccer ability will have to be made. The 18 months imo is based on staying under the salary cap, not getting rid of guys just to get rid of them.

oh ya and before i forget, ******** brian mullan, that guy is a total piece of shit that has NO BUSINESS being in MLS. he can ********ing rot in hell with all the other douche bags that ruin professional soccer, the beautiful game and players careers. he is an awful player who acts out of spite against players who are more skillful and technically sound than he is and when he loses perfectly normal and standard challenges he acts out in rage and hurts the game. he can piss off.

I think the 18 months announcement, while coming from practical issues related to salary cap, is also about motivating the team. If it were only practical issues, no reason to make an announcement. The announcement has motivational value because goals are much more motivating if they are time-limited. By saying to the players that this is an 18 month goal, after that all thoughts on the composition of the team are off, you could still be here or shipped elsewhere, it focuses their motivation on making it happen now or never.

It also has public relations value. There will be a point at which the management needs to reboot the composition of the team and there will be no sacred cows. I will not be surprised to see even the likes of Rimando, Beckerman, Morales, Olave, etc. all be moved, retired, etc. We recall that some fans were upset about Williams being, effectively, forced into retirement. Imagine the outcry when the management 'blows up the team'. So, by putting it out there that in 18 months if this group hasn't shown it will accomplish the big goals, when it blows it up the fans are forewarned.

It is skillfully played, like most of Garson's moves.

Man. Glad MLSlive had the RSL crew instead of the Altitude trogs.

Did anyone listen to the radio show last week when Fitzgerald explained how MLS makes the decision of which announcing team to use in their DK or MLSlive broadcasts? Super interesting...at least, to me.

If the local production is for a regional cable network, it's easier to pick that production up for Direct Kick for technical reasons.

Unless I misunderstood Trey, it also makes it easier to pick up for internet broadcast. So I'm not sure why MLSlive had the SL guys rather than Altitude.

I'd put Ned ahead of him as well. But he had a spectacular game. The thing he did much better in this one was that he was really challenging defensively. In the past he would get in the way of the attacking players, but last night he was trying to dispossess them on nearly every play this time (and often successful.

Up until this point, I would have said that he'd done well...for a rookie. If he can show like this again, he's proving that he belongs and deserves minutes.

My only complaint is that he still puts some dangerous balls up for grabs in the defensive half of the field. I believe he did that a couple of times last night, but he's still learning.

I think they chose the RSL crew in order to avoid having fans wanting to slit their own throat. Haven't seen them yet this year, but in the past the Altitude crew might be the worst in the league.

I knew I was missing a player from the midfield.
How did I forget to grab some boys?!

ok, he is 6th on the list.

Olave owned Cummings last night. It was such a joy to watch.

for entertainment: go look at the cRapids thread on this game. They're pining for Gary Smith... wow

I did like how they called Dunseth a homer. As far as the matches I've listened to him do the color (away games) he's always seemed to praise the other team while more or less bashing us here and there. At the very least he needs to learn to stop talking. We don't need him speaking for 65 minutes a match. :D

I actually kinda like Dunseth as a commentator, but I understand there are a lot of varying personal tastes for commentary. If you look around the league it could be much worse...

I'm pretty happy with the duo we have right now. I also like that neither of them is European. I think some of the European announcers that have been brought in to the league are pretty good, and I would gladly take them over really bad American announcers, but its nice to see some "homegrown" talent developing.
