No, there's no match fixing going on in Italy. None whatsoever.

Here's the highlights of the Bari/Lecce match that allowed Lecce to achieve la salvezza. The Masiello autogoal is a thing of beauty.

Except that he admitted to prosecutors that he did in fact put the ball in on purpose to ensure the victory, so he could earn $239,000.

Davey, I know you don't want to believe it, but fixing goes in Serie A from top to bottom.

Sometimes crime suspects decide to collaborate with prosecutors when they are almost sure to be sentenced. According to Italy's trial law, you can choose to face a "rito abbreviato" trial, that is, a judge ddecide to convict or acquit someone reading both prosecutors and lawyers reports and acts, without a discussion between parts involved. If you are guilty, the ordinary sentence applied to that case will be reduced by a third... (example, normal sentence 15 years, rito abbreviato 10 years) . I hope you'll understand what I write because I'm an Italian studying English as a foreign language.

Kens, I see what you mean. And, I am not naive - I'm sure it happens at all levels. I did not realize he admitted to it.

No, I never said you were naive. I remember when I posted something before about match fixing, and everyone got all up in arms about it and said that it doesn't happen. The sad truth is that happens everywhere.

Hhaha buddy! I know you weren't calling me naive. I am just admitting to the sad realty that I'm sure betting occurs in European football more than the public is aware of.

Similar to Masiello's. But, like Masiello's, I just thought it was just an unfortunate situation.

Most own goals are unfortunate circumstances. When I first saw Masiello's OG, I didn't think anything of it. Just like I don't really think much of this one. It was when Masiello admitted it that it struck a chord.

I've seen genuine games that had outrageous scorelines, and I've seen games that look like flat out fixes. That's the beauty of the fix: To fool people into thinking the fix isn't in and making it look genuine.

If you have time to read, I really recommend reading "The Fix". It's an outstanding book, and provides insight into how fixes work from players who have actually fixed matches.

there were other instances he coulda let the goal in but he didnt...why would he wait til another chance to let a goal in?

i think it all goes down to salaries.....i dont know why american sports pay so well but in case of soccer in europe which is more popular and bigger, the players get such shit salaries. No wonder they can take bribes easily, but its good that its being exposed so people will fear to take it. At least in the main top leagues, players should at least get 1M or more per year....getting a few 100 thousand isnt shit for a pro athlete that has to put up with so much. Even the shittiest NBA players who hardly play get at least 1-1.5mil/year....but in europe it seems like a salary of an actual good player

Well, not all players get million(s) per year. For instance, just off the top of my head, Arian Foster of the Houston Texans (NFL) just got a new deal. Beforehand, however, he was making $500K a season and was arguably one of the best players in the league. The year before, he made $400K. That is comparable to some no-name bench player in Serie A who earns €350-400K. I don't think it's about salary to be honest.

It comes down to corruption in culture. Take a look at the Corruption Perceptions Index. Unfortunately, Italy is a culture where corruption is more rife than say the US.

Can someone explain why it's OK to fix matches for money, and you'll only receive a points penalty, but talking with a referee designator, and not actually doing anything wrong, gets you relegated and gets two of your titles handed over to someone else? Can someone seriously explain this?

"It's Italy," would probably be the best explanation, unfortunately.

But let's not forget that, Turkey aside, the last major Euro match-fixing scandal was in precious Germany, which got about one millionth of the English language press attention despite being far more serious than any of the alleged Farsopoli crimes. It was completely swept under the carpet and all we hear nowadays is how the Bundesliga is a shining example for all.

    - This game is from this season and is not part of the investigation, but
the reaction of De Sanctis and Especially then Lucarelli comment/smiles gives the appearence that the bet was for 2 goal spread, which indeed was restored before the game ended.

    - Hope for sake of Napoli fans, their players are not involved...

The rai tv just said Masiello has been released from jail and is now under house arrest but they said he admitted to scoring an own goal while with Bari last year. They are saying other teams are now counting on points reduction and may have something worthwhile to play for until th end of the season.

So Pepe refused to fix a game and receive a Ferrari, yet he BUYS one when he joins Juve and somehow this is relevant? Seems like they're trying to connect Juve to it any way they can.

Btw, I also find it amusing that the teams only face a point reduction for ACTUALLY FIXING GAMES, yet Juve gets relegated with no proof of any games being fixed.

What I want to know is how they find this stuff out? I mean how can taping telephone conversations be legal? Whether whomever is involved or if they are wrong or right, isn't that a direct invasion of privacy in a free world? I mean if this is the case, Italy is still in a police state therefore, with all this talk about freedom is a bunch of crock. This is just like the Russian KGB . East German Stasi and the German Nazi government. I'm sure its happened in the USA also but I never heard of anyone going to jail for sports fraud because of taped telephone conversations. If that were the case, Pete Rose would have been in jail 20 years ago!
