A place to discuss the best player in the world, along with and some other "meh" players out there.

BTW, this is not a rivalry thread. It will be carefully watched, and moderated.

Best player in the world? NO DISCUSSION. AT ALL.
Best player of all time? Now there we can have a discussion. lol

But lets not discuss those things and just enjoy watching history in the making. Lionel Messi the 24 year old legend.

Messi has equalled Mario Jardel (Sporting 2001-02) as player who scored most club goals (55) in a season in the 21st centrury [via md]

note: all-time club goals/season record at european top club is the 67 goals of gerd muller at bayern munich in 1972-73 #fcblive

So Gerd Müller's record is next!

Previously it was mentioned that it was someone in the 20's from Everton that had the record with 63 goals. But Gerd it is and he is going down :D

I have to admit that I'm a big Gerd Müller fan and have no problem putting him in my all-time starting XI. Didn't try anything fancy, just got the job done.
BS member Gregoriak made thread that has a very thorough count of all of his career goals but he has Müller down with 'only' 54 Bayern Munich goals in 72/73. That is, 54 goals in 44 matches! 8 of those were converted spot kicks.
Combined with his totals from the previous season of 1971/72 (50 goals in 48 club games) and he bursted the net 104 times in 92 games while wearing a Bayern shirt!
And that's not counting another 20 goals he netted in 14 internationals for West Germany.
    Thread: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=899630

So I'm curious to know who on twitter initially came up with 67 Bayern goals in 72/73 and what their source is.

Btw, this isn't to suggest that Messi sucks. :p

Ah, the Ligapokal. Well, it is considered an official tournament so I can't argue that one. :)
    Thanks.

Messi is now the 15th best goalscorer in La Liga history. After his 2 goals today against Zaragoza he now has one more than Puskas. 157 goals - 3 goals up to Luis Aragones.

Depending on whether we advance to the CL final or not, Messi has potentially 10 or 11 more matches to score in.

In his last 12 outings he's knocked in 23, so...

edit: also, the Messi(ah) is risen: Posters of Jesus and Messi for sale during a Holy Week procession in Colombia

No way man.. If he did that.. Just imagine the expectations next season. We would be disappointed if he got 50. 70 should be his target next season.
(I seriously can't believe we are talking about 70 goals in one season being a realistic target LOL my god)

60 goals and counting a season is really crazy. I mean, for example, the third placed team in La Liga has scored (in Liga only though) 46 in total, and besides us and LPB no team has scored more than them.

"Leo Messi is poised to spray all existing records in the world of football."

My Google translate makes it sound like he's pissing on the record books, which is not bad. Not sure why they didn't just use pulverize, it's an English word also.
