Re: Columbus Crew: 2012 Roster Thread: 2011-12 Off Season Edition Got a link to confirm this, per Jardy. Warzycha says we're still in contact with them, but you are correct that neither is with the Crew now. Both are removed from the trialist section. RW also said we may bring some more guys in. Currently, I have 33 players for 30 spots, if we still have one trialist. If not, then 32 for 30. 29 really, as we are planning to leave a spot open for a DP. I. Senior Roster/On Budget (SR): Players under Contract. 18/18-20, club's option. Salary Cap at $2.81 million. Team can opt for only 18 players, but will still be charged a min amount per open roster spot below 18 towards the cap. DP's count $335,000 if not paid down via allocation $$. In season DP's count $167,500 against the cap. #. Position. Player, Nationality, Age, DOB, Roster Notes, '11 Salary Base/Guar. 1. GK William Hesmer, USA, 30, 11-23-81, $152,500/$163,500. 2. At least two open spots here. The DP signing is rumored, and Francis, Anor, and Heinemann can all move down, where we have at least 4 spots open, though Speas would surely take one. ----------------------------------------------- II. Exempt Roster/Off-Budget (ER): Spots 21-24. 4/4 filled. GA players. $42,000 Min. No age restriction. No MAX? Up to two Homegrown Players can be singed to GA contracts. No limit on # of Homegrowns. 21. F Ben Speas, USA, 20, 1-17-91, Homegrown/UNC, $???/$??? 22. M/F Ethan Finlay, USA, 21, 8-6-90, Creighton, 1st Round Pick, $???/$??? 23. Maybe Homegrowns are automatically on the apprentice roster, I have no idea, but I think those two players (along with Gehrig) are the off-budget guys most likely to contribute this year. ------------------------------------------------------- III. Apprentice Roster/Off Budget (AR): Spots 25-30. 10/6. $32,600 Min. Players making $32.6k must be under 25 in 2012 (Do not turn 25 in 2012). Spots 29-30 can be left open and the club can receive $35k per slot in allocation money. No indication of a MAX salary here, so players on this roster could make MORE than $32.6k as long as they meet the age requirement. 25. M Eric Gehrig, USA, 24, 12-15-87, $32,600/$32,600 (turns 25 in 2012, not in-season) 26. D Korey Veeder, USA, 20, 10-13-91, $32,600/$34,475. 27. F Andrew Bulls, USA, 22, 10-9-89, 4th round Supplemental pick, Balt-Maryland Gehrig the head of the class here. He saw significant action with the Senior Team last year. He does seem to violate the age restriction this year, but MLS is notorious for not being clear, and his salary prevents him from being in a higher spot. So unless unless he gets a salary bump to $42k, there is no other roster he can be on. I'm putting the 2/3 of the Homegrowns here, but that could change when salary info is released. Also put all the Supplemental picks here. ------------------------ IV. International Slots. 8 of 8. Teams start w/ 8, they can be traded. Julius James (Trinidad & Tobago) and Tony Tchani (Cameroon) have Green Cards, and do not count as International Players. Sorry guys, a bit behind. Per Jardy: Perry and Urso signed. Amoo and Bulls released. Crew submits roster of 28 to the league, but Mr. Jardy didn't provide who was on it, though the roster on Crew.com seems like it. George and Finch still unsigned, Also, trialists Vukovic and former KC mid Stephane Auvray are with us. http://www.dispatch.com/content/blogs/covering-the-crew/2012/03/crew-signs-two.html First off, my best guess at the 28 on the roster, by position. Anyway, these are the 28 on the Crew.com. I. On Roster = 28 GK = 3. Hesmer; Gruenebaum, Lampson D = 7. Miranda, Marshall, James; Mendes, Williams Veeder, Perry D/M = 4. International Slots = 6 of 8 Renteria, Miranda, Mirosevic, Francis, Anor, Vargas II. In Limbo D: Jamie Finch (USA) (Supp. Pick); Namanja Vukovic (LB) (Montengro) D/M: Kevan George (2nd round pick) (T&T) M: Stephane Auvray (formerly of KC, Guadeloupe) We are supposedly leaving a spot open for a DP, that means the 4 guys above are battling for 1 spot. Or 2 if you think the DP talk is a smoke screen. Regardless, we have 2 open international slots, and 2 roster spots, so that wouldn't be a factor. With Finch's injury issues, hard to think he's in the running. Though anyone who can play LB has a shot (we should have drafted a LB sooner!). ----------------------------------- Now my shots at who goes where. I'm leaving the 2 spots on the Senior Roster. 1 for a DP, and 1 if the likes of Vukovic or Auvray signs. If George makes the team, then someone from the lower roster (Speas, Finlay, Gehrig) will likely get moved up. I. Senior Roster/On Budget (SR): Players under Contract. 18/18-20, club's option. From what I've seen this offseason, it seems like Vukovic has a good shot of making the roster. Depending on his price, I'd be happy with the decision to bring him in.
Would really be pleased if Auvray proves himself worthy of a deal. Pretty sure he got a green card in his time at KC, where they hand them out like Mr. Nice Guy. Positionally, LB and DM are the biggest concerns and he could go some way to shoring up one of those spots. Long-time captain for Guadeloupe, a team that is usually comprised of professional players, his experience could potentially help provide a steadying influence for our young midfield. Not seen Vukovic, but I don't see much sense in having three int'l fullbacks. Just get Estridge in for a look now that he's available. Besides, if we do end up signing Auvray then I would think we might see DO'R at left back quite a bit if Francis either doesn't make the job his own or still struggles with fitness.
So I'm not trying to put too much pressure on the kid or hype him up too much but does Kirk Urso remind anyone else of Brian Carroll? I haven't seen him play a ton but what I have seen I like the comparison; glad we picked him up.
I think that they are similar in that they both do a lot of things that don't stand out, but are critical to helping a team win. Positioning. Keeping our shape, ,etc. I do think Urso is a bit better with the ball. I'd note that he takes corners and free kicks a lot, something Carroll never did. And though it is not evolving, I'm thinking Tchani may be the 6 and Urso may be the 8. Though I'll wait to see it live before making any judgments. Carroll was always the stay at home type. Yes, I know Robert likes to run the double d-mid pulley system, so 6 and 8 may not be the most accurate descriptions.
Looks like Defender Jamie Finch is out. He just posted these on his twitter: Guess he'll have to go back to softball...
Goff: Nemanja Vukovic, left back trialist from Montenegro, has received a work visa and is set to join Columbus Crew, his rep says #mls
There an article in a Croatian paper already. http://www.vijesti.me/sport/nemanja-vukovic-drustvu-bekama-anrija-kina-clanak-65556 Google translate as always is entertaining. Former footballer Future, coma and Grbalj Nemanja Vukovic made a very attractive transfer - Montenegrin footballer prover in the United States, the MLS professional league, which performs a planetary star David Bekam, and former Arsenal and Liverpool aces TIJERA Anri and Robi Kin .. . Vukovic has yet to makes his debut, having recently signed a three-year contract with the team loaves from Columbus Ohio who won the title of 2008th year. "I am satisfied, the team is strong, as evidenced by the recently won the title. My new club is one of the few who plays on the classic football stadium. In the United States or most teams compete in stadiums that were made for American football," said Vukovic. For most football players from the domestic league market is "open" mainly to the east, towards the countries of the former Soviet Union (Janko Simovic strengthen Ukraine's Dynamo Kiev, Radoslav Batak went to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Orahovac Sanibal). Vukovic, however, went completely the other way, to the west, across the Atlantic ... "I had some offers from Polish and Ukrainian, but my manager Dejan Drobnjak offered this option, which appeared to me very interesting. I am grateful to my manager, America offers really great things not only for football, well I have gone with the financial "said Vukovic, who has international experience from the Greek Panetolikos (for the same club representative is currently defending goalkeeper Srdjan Blazic). Vukovic knows what awaits him, especially because it was already practicing with a new team, he felt the atmosphere of soccer on American soil. "I am satisfied that everything is organized, I was seven days with the team, although it was not a conventional probe. When we were training in South Carolina we had a lecture on doping experts we approached a lot. We understand that we can be punished for anything at the expense of trials and things like publish on facebook or social networking Tviteru. League is actually organized in a shiny, flawless manner. championship has already started, I had no right to participate in the first round, at last we were free, so I've got enough to come back to Montenegro. I finished the visa tomorrow and travel back to America. I heard from the director of the club, there is a possibility that has already debuted on Saturday, although it is under question because of a hard, long road, "said 27-year old soccer player. A new member of the U.S. Columbus loaves during the winter practicing in Podgorica, with a team of youth ... "I am grateful to coach Miki Vukotic, I trained with Youth players until I found the foreign involvement. Thanks to the Grbalj, in which I spent the autumn peak season," concluded Vukovic.
Jardy speculates Francis could be first to be cut to make room for a DP. We're currently at 30 players on the roster.
Both are Intl. And I would think the guy who has played more, and plays a LB position is more valuable than a MF.
That depends. With Mendes and the new guy, you have two players for that spot. Do you keep Frances around as third string? There's more room in the midfield for a chance to play, especially with current injuries.
Vukovic has been signed, it's official. http://www.thecrew.com/news/2012/03/crew-signs-defender-nemanja-vukovic And I spaced on Kevan George signing as well, last I heard, he had turned down an offer. I'll list him as a middie for now, but think he may be a CB in the future. http://www.thecrew.com/news/2012/03/george-inks-deal-crew So, like Jardy says, we are now at 30. Raise your hand if you thought all along the DP business was never going to happen. Anyway, here is the 30: I. On Roster = 30 GK = 3. Hesmer; Gruenebaum, Lampson D = 8. Or course, the DP could be an American, or one could not be coming. ----------------------------------- Now my shots at who goes where. I'm still a little fuzzy on the new rules, but I know the 20 guys making the most money go on the On-Budge roster (with the exception of GA's, and maybe Homegrowns?), and the 6 guys making the least go on the Off-Budget Apprentice roster. F Tom Heinemann, USA, 24, 4-23-87, $42,000/$42,000. --------------------------------------------------- Going purely on PT and the depth chart. I think Vukovic surely is in the top 20, and I think Finlay is tops among the draft picks, and certainly appears ahead of Anor in Warzycha's estimation. Urso could be here, but I'd have to see the salary info to be certain. ----------------------------------------------- II. Exempt Roster/Off-Budget (ER): Spots 21-24. 4/4 filled. GA players. $42,000 Min. No age restriction. No MAX salary? Up to two Homegrown Players can be singed to GA contracts. No limit on # of Homegrowns. 21. F Ben Speas, USA, 20, 1-17-91, Homegrown/UNC, $???/$??? (GA?) 22. M Kirk Urso, USA, 21, 3-6-90, 1st round Supplemental pick, UNC 23. D/M Josh Williams, USA, 23, 4-18-88, $42,000/$42,000. 24. M Cole Grossman, USA, 22, 4-10-89, $42,000/$42,000. D Korey Veeder, USA, 20, 10-13-91, $32,600/$34,475. 27. F Aaron Horton, USA, 19, 5-19-92, Homegrown, $???/$??? 28. GK Matt Lampson, USA, 22, 9-6-89, Homegrown, $???/$??? 29. D Aubrey Perry, USA, 20, 1-20-91, 2nd Round pick, $???/$??? 30. M Kevan George, Trinidad & Tobago, 21, 1-30-90, 2nd Round pick. $???/$??? Gehrig the head of the class here. ------------------------ IV. International Slots. 6 of 8. Teams start w/ 8, they can be traded. I didn't really expect the DP to come in this transfer period, given that it is mid-season for most teams, and I think we're looking for something a bit better than the type of player you can get mid-season. I figure it's 50/50 for the summer. That is when Guille came in, for example.
Per Jardy's twitter account: "Just confirmed that the Crew still has one international player roster spot available after Vukovic signing."
Well, someone we don't know about has a Green Card. I hope Mr. Jardy or someone at the Crew lets us know whom.
