'Thin gruel', 'weak tea', 'dog ate his homework', ... lots of 'nails on chalkboard' mistakes, incorrect player I.D.s, name mispronunciation and basic counting errors. One of my pet peeves is calling every ball that goes over the end line a shot "on goal", the graphics people got it mostly right so if it doesn't improve watching with the sound off might again be an option. Its Altitude and I'm grateful for the coverage but the new guy has some work to do.

    Its always the little things.

In stoppage time of the NYRB FCD match today Arlo kept saying that the various NYRB forwards were “screaming” for the ball. It was distracting and I’d look at the man’s face our arms to see if they were yelling at the midfielder for the ball, they were not. Then he’d make the claim again. This time another player is “screaming” for the ball. The stupid things he says get me grinding… Do NYRB forwards have panache for yelling? Do the mids not know time is running down? What the holy hell do Seattle people see in this jacknut? Why make the claim that they are “screaming” for the ball? Does he think that kind of shit is going to get me on the edge of my seat? Doesn’t he realize it’s too small of a tool to ruin his credibility over? So many questions that I couldn’t enjoy NY failing to score or try. Sigh. A British accent does not ad IQ points.

Somehow I ended up taping the Columbus feed of the game on FS Ohio. Their color guy was pretty decent (and, added bonus, wasn't overly biased in favor of the Crew). He sounded Australian. In any event, I would take him over Balboa in a heartbeat. Something about his voice is really grating. Kind of how I hate Mike Patrick when he calls college basketball.

Based on watching the match on Altitude, it seems to me that:
    (1) it WAS his first real match,
    (2) he doesn't have any kind of soccer background,
    (3) they (Altitude) didn't spend a lot of time in the rehearsal booth with him,
    (4) he gets points for not trying a faux English accent
    (5) he tended to forget Brian Crookham's last name ("Kirkham")
    (6) he needs to work on picking up a bit of the lingo, such as "offside" vs "offsides", "handling" vs "hand ball",
    (7) someone from Altitude needs to teach him that careless vs reckless vs dangerous have specific uses in the Laws of the Game,
    (8) and yes, I'm a referee, so I'm picky about #'s 6 & 7 above,
    (9) the first step is admitting I have a problem, therefore,
    (10) I'm admitting I'm a referee and I have a problem. ;)

At the same time, as I said, it was his first real match, and every commentator has to get that first one under his belt somehow, somewhere.

I'm just happy the games are on TV when I can't make it in person....

Not all shots are a "shot on goal." Especially the ones that end up in the stands.

I would be willing to bet this is a "KSE is cheap" problem, instead of Romero problem. I don't remember them tracking "shots" and "shots on goal" separately in the stats column at any point.

He said "a shot on goal" every time someone took a shot, even though the shots were not "on goal."

In that case, you and I were paying attention to different faults. I noticed it whenever Altitude popped up the "shots" statbox on the screen and he'd say "Colorado had x shots on goal."

I noticed it the one time and gave it an eye roll and wondered why the crookMAN guy didn't bother correcting him.

I saw a stats table on Altitude and they were separated, I don't recall exactly what the graphic called them but there were both categories of shots i.e. set & subset. I remember because I was wishing he would look at it and notice the difference. Shots on goal minus opponent's saves should = goals scored. Shots minus shots on goal should = how bad you are at finishing. ;>)

Sadly we are back to crappy broadcasts with an announcer who doesn't know soccer. After a good announcer last year, Altitude has again taken a step backwards. Is it really that hard to hire an announcer who knows the game? Calling free kicks throw ins. Misidentifying players, Calling Wingert, Winegart all game (Marcello help him out when he starts making a fool of himself!) and clearly not understanding what is going on...

My peeve was every ball that was cleared by the defense was "played out" which to me means kicking the ball across the touch line on purpose, usually due to a player being injured/down. I also feel like I'm at a kids game next to a parent of the player that just made a crappy pass when I hear "great ball by _____" and it goes to no one and/or the other team (hint, passing is qualitative for things other than distance and velocity). Unfortunately he had a lot of chances for that one in the RSL match.

    You mean two years ago?

If not, I'm really intrigued by whom of Marlowe, Haynes, and the others in the Russian roulette you thought was good.

I thought he sounded like he improved from the first match. There was mention on air about him chatting up Cello beforehand. I know that's how I would go about preparing since Cello has more experience behind a microphone, is going to be sitting next to you, and knows a ton more about the beautiful game. I have two thoughts about his performance so far; A, I have my own way of watching this team play and I don’t listen too much and B, he hasn’t outright annoyed me yet. But with these guys it’s only a matter of me getting tuned in to decide that they suck. My peeve is being drawn in to unrelated matters like they do in baseball between pitches. I don’t think this sport allows too much of that from PBP people.

Haynes did a very good job IMHO. 2-yrs ago I think it was the guy that got fired mid-season.

2 years ago was Marc Stout, on the CW.

I love Haynes for hockey, and appreciated the way he could still get passionate while calling soccer, even though it wasn't his sport. But for me, his lack of knowledge of soccer terminology was a little annoying. Still, he didn't embarrass himself/us a la Marlowe, et al, which probably makes him the best of last year's group.

Wasn't Haynes the one that said "A red card, now that's an ejection, right?"? Not a shining moment there...
