There are persistent rumors that Canada has chosen a coach but his/her identity has not been announced yet. Through Twitter it's leaked out that players have apparently been invited to a training camp. Wonder if they'll have a chance to play any games before qualifying starts.
Well now that OQ is over they can announce the new coach and the roster for the final and only training camp with this coach: http://canadasoccer.com/canada-u-20f-begins-preparations-for-panama-p149041 There isn't much about Andrew Olivieri as a coach except that he was GK coach for the senior women and has coached at the elite Lac St. Louis club since 2008. I have a feeling this roster, like Herdman's, was largely put together by CSA consensus rather than being Olivieri's choices. He likely has seen some of them at elite youth club events and if he's known about this appointment for some time I'm sure he's been viewing videos. The result is quite a different list from the last camps held a year or more ago under Morace. I'm happy to see that players left out of the picture then are back, such as Danica Wu of Ohio St. and Kylie Davis of Memphis. The interesting omissions are Ally Courtnall of UCLA, (Is she thinking of switching back to the U.S.? Uh oh.) and Adriana Leon of Notre Dame (who misfired more often than not in her sophomore season).
She's a fun player to watch, who's not big in stature, but big in always defending vigorously. So, then, here's Canada roster (with 2 extra players who will be cut, likely 1 GK and 1 field player):
CONCACAF's section on the Women's U-20 Championship now has a small item confirming web streaming of the tournament via CONCACAF TV. *** I still haven't seen any notices about any of the matches being televised in the US. Fox Soccer's website has listings through mid-March. No matches are listed. On the possibility of FSC showing the USA's matches live, there are no live match conflicts for either the USA's group stage matches or any of the knock-out matches, so barring any odd contractual obligations, FSC should be able to show all of USA's matches live. ESPN networks (namely, ESPNU): Their schedule only shows two weeks at a time. However, they do likely have a major conflict: Men's college basketball. This championship's knockout matches are the same weekend as all the NCAA men's basketball conference tournaments and the NCAA Men's bracket announcement. Given this conflict, I don't expect ESPN to pick up this championship. Universal Sports is a possibility, but its availability is limited, so that won't help most viewers. Their schedule currently goes through the last weekend in February.
So far so good for the CSA's gamble. Understandably they started a bit slowly. I think this was their first official international game. Unlike previous cycles this is a much older Canadian team. CONCACAF finally has the roster up and it shows that there's only one '94, Kylie Davis, and she already played her freshman season at Memphis. They should probably be considered an underdog to an experienced Mexico squad which has some players from the Olympic qualifying team. In 2010 Canada lost to both Mexico and Costa Rica. I was wondering about the positions listed for the players. Exeter is listed as a defender but she substituted in for Ezurike, a forward, and Setterlund went in for Sawicki, a midfielder not a defender.

The U-20s coach for Canada followed in the footsteps of Herdman and used a very different lineup in the second game from the first. He's no doubt worried about the tight schedule of this tournament. The downside is that these players, who haven't had much of a chance to get to know each other, don't get to play with a consistent lineup.
Sabrina D'Angelo saved Canada's skins tonight. Well, all right, it wasn't do-or-die but surely a psychological advantage to avoid the U.S. and clinch a berth in the semifinal. The impressive thing is how much D'Angelo has improved since the U-17s. Interesting to start Ezurike over Exeter considering all the chances she missed on. (Also credit Cecily Santiago, getting a chance to play against girls her own age). Wonder if they'll be looking at more choices at forward if they qualify. The Canadians are probably not in as good condition as the Mexicans, college spring season being only in its early stages when they came to camp. Melhado in central defense was also impressive.

I agree Sabrina is much more improved then her showing in the U-17's. After looking at those highlights, and she started all of those games, she no where displayed the spring and athletic abilities she is displaying now. She has a vertical jump that I didn't see with her tips and she can go side to side very effectively. She has always been agressive, but now she can back that up with athletic ability. South Carolina is looking very dangerous with a girl like her in net. And I did check her bio out at the University of South Carolina. What I found out was pretty amazing, considering she is a Freshman, the accolades she has already earned for her first year in college is impressive. For people who are not familiar with the college system and I'm not saying your not, but to many Europeans they may not understand the Conference system that exist in the US. The NCAA is an umbrella organization that handles all college sports in the US and run the tournaments. In Women's soccer, there are 300 universities playing in 30 conferences. In comparisons to Europe, each of them could be looked at like a league. Some are premier leagues where the best teams play and others in the bottom tier. Think of it the British Premier League to that of a league in Latvia. There is a very large difference in quality to each Conference. My reasons for rehashing over all this is because where Sabrina plays. She plays in a conference called the South Eastern Conference, SEC for short. The SEC for all intents is considered the second best conference in the US. The ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) is the first. Despite the fact that the PAC 12 has the national champion in it and has many good teams. There are many bad teams as well in that conference. These are the accolades Sabrina as already achieved. -Started 20 of the 21 games her team played -2011 Soccer America All-Freshman First Team (She made the all rookie team here) -2011 NSCAA First Team All-South Region (The only rookie to make this team) -2011 SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the year (The only player EVER in SEC history to win to two player of the year awards in one year) -2011 SEC Freshman of the Year (Rookie of the year award for the SEC) -2011 First Team All-SEC (The only rookie to make the team) -2011 SEC Goalkeeper of the year (Did it as a rookie) So... Sabrina did this playing in one of the toughest conferences in the US. Where on any given night her team would be fighting a top 25 team in the US and she was only 17 years old. Her bio did point out that she was highly touted and much was expected out of her, and I would have to say she responded. She backstopped her team to become the SEC champions, beating Florida who were champions 5 straight years running. All I have to say is wow, and she is only 18 now, with 3 more years with South Carolina. South Carolina is going to be scary for the foreseeable future.
