At least the Road Trip From Hell is over with. So bad, even Coach McClellan had to be taken into the lockerroom for treatment in today's game!:(

A friend of mine celebrates his birthday today (Wednesday, 2/29/12).

Although he realistically turns 40 years old today, he only officially turns 10.

I've been waiting for this day for at least the last 35 years. I never thought I'd live to see the day that the USA would beat Italy, especially on their home ground. As an Italian-American growing up in California and who lived in Florence in the earlier part of the decade, I always wished it would happen. In 1990 in the stadio olimpico in Rome, I saw them come close but it wasn't to be. During the US Cup of 1992 & in the 2006 WC , they drew Italy but still no win. This however, is a phenomenal victory! I must say I am proud of the yanks!

    Good job & Bravi USA!

    Yes!

Really something. Should do great things for the popularity of the World Game in the US.

I think the U.S. had a much better game against Italy in the 2006 World Cup, when it really meant something. I thought they played them even, at least, in that match. They won yesterday but they kind of reverted back to the old bunker and counter style. So on the basis of this result, I'm not ready to pronounce that the U.S. has arrived as a world power in soccer or anything like that.

I lived and worked in florence in the earlier part of the decade and had to do a lot of translation. I also majored in Italian and Spanish but its been 7 years since I got back. Excuse my skills, I'll try to do my best but here is a rough translation article on the Italy -USA match from the Italian sports daily new paper, la gazzettda dello sport.....

    Italy drops to the Usa
At the Euro they better be different than they are now...
    GENOVA, 29 febbraio 2012

Surprising victory by the US in Genoa's freindly against the azzurri: Dempsey scored the decider at the 10th minute mark in the 2nd half. Second consecutive k.o. for Prandelli's team, what a struggle to create plays and chances

    http://www.gazzetta.it/Nazionale/29...a-euro-dovra-essere-diverso-81486327424.shtml

The friendly match vs the USA in Genoa, finished with a surprising loss. Klinsmann's team wins 1-0: Dempsey scores at the 10th minute mark in the 2nd half. Its the second consecutive loss for the azzurri, after their loss against Uruguay in Rome. Nothing doing, the national team just can't interpret how to play their freindlies well enough. Historical.

Therefore, all of Prandelli's 4 losses came when there weren't 3 points (in the standings) at stake. Instead when it counts, Italy has always been there up until now. The friendly at the Ferraris Stadium sandwiched between tough league matches was not a real a big deal. There are 102 days left until the start of the Euros in Danzica against Spain, on the 10th of June, so we don't have to be worried all of a sudden. However, not much worked out well this evening. Not the attacking duo of Matri-Giovinco, which everyone had been waiting for. Or trying out Thiago Motta in the trequartista positon or for that matter, the overall general spirit of the group, intense only towards the end , with little luck even though Borini in his debut seemed to give a decent show, incisive from the outset in the attack on the right. So we get to the interpretaion: in the last encounter against the USA Italy won 3-1 on June 15th 2009 in Pretoria in the Confederations Cup with two goals by (Giuseppe) Rossi. It was an illusory success: Italy came out of that South African tournament and arrived to the WC with shipwreck, the USA went all the way to the final against Brazil in the Confederations Cup , and then made the 2nd round of that 2010 WC.

L’ITALIA FATICA A CARBURARE — The first half was ok. Klinsmann is a free spirit off the pitch, but he makes his players play like little ordered soldiers. Precise, gathered, without concession for inspiration and they had little but also no lack of concentration. The pressing was high but they seemed to not know how to use it, while the Americans left Italy with half of their field , they gathered in their own, without leaving any space. No way to go even with 21 players squeezed into tight spaces. Italy kept fighting. The rythym is too slow to go through the American (defensive) wall. Giovinco and Matri upfront gave a good try, but they are always bounced off a double team. Motta is dangerous with a few shots, inserting himself in the vertical, shows that he had ideas, but doesn't show that he can play the trequartista position. The Usa came alive near Buffon's goal with a free kick by Dempsey. Nothing doing. The first half was a yawn. The only noise was from the whistles of the fans in the North end of the stadium during the American national anthem, even though they were silenced by the applause of the rest of the Ferraris Stadium.

PRANDELLI CAMBIA — After the half in comes Chiellini for Criscito (on the left for a falling Ogbonna), while Montolivo comes on for Nocerino, out of place, forced to play in the midfield. Italy is more willing but doesn't do much.

SEGNA DEMPSEY — Then comes the goal. But its from an American. At the first chance a pass by Altidore, right cross to outside of the box to the most talented American player , Dempsey. Buffon couldn't get it. Americans up. Prandelli changes again: in Pazzini, who came on to an applause at the Marassi Stadium, and Borini, who now are forming a trident attack with Giovinco, who gets open on the left wing. It was Borini who was the most dangerous for the azzurri, a lot of mix ups follow in the Americans box with Montolivo dangerous in the injury time. Howard though keeps the door clean. A win for the USA , for the first time in 11 tries (against Italy).
