Victor Pineda has allegedly been having a good pre-season with the Fire, and should get some playing time this year. Klopas had this to say about him:

“Victor is coming along,” Klopas said via teleconference from the team’s Ventura, Calif., training camp. “I see a big difference from Victor from a year ago to now.”

Klopas described Pineda, an 18-year-old from Bolingbrook, as being stronger, more confident and seeing the game quicker. “He will get opportunities this season to play,” Klopas said.

Are any of our u-20s besides Gil expected to get much PT this season? Maybe Salgado? Seems like there are a decent amount of them out there, but most of them are pretty far down the depth chart for their clubs.

Well, Henley if he does end up switching, which according to him is 50/50. That's also assuming that if he's already getting u23 and full nat appearances he'd also go with the u20s.

Zach Pfeffer is a 1995 but had some appearances with Philly last year.

    Renken might get some minutes.

Sean Cunningham might get a few minutes for Molde.

Funny you posted this. I just watched the Houston Academy vs Houston full team scrimmage video highlights from a few weeks ago and the goalie really stood out to me making top notch saves. Looked tall lean athletic great hands and reactions. Wonder if it was him.

While Marschieder is a 93, I'm not sure he's eligible for this U20 cycle, as he is an early 93 and is already 19. From The Dynamo website:

Marscheider, 19, has been in training with the Dynamo since the beginning of preseason. He previously played three-and-a-half years for the Colorado Rush Soccer Club. The Colorado Springs-native was awarded the Golden Gloves as the top goalkeeper in 2011 for the Colorado Rush program.

YNT eligibility cutoffs are always January 1, so we can safely go by birth year. Anyone born in 1993 or later is eligible.

All players born on or after January 1, 1993 are age-eligible for the current U20 cycle.

Took me awhile to figure out why you were asking that before I saw the angry face. No idea how that ended up there.

Any idea where Birmingham is looking to play Packwood in the long run? Looking at reserve reports for B'ham he has been playing all over the back line

I think he's a d-mid over the long run but I don't know where BCFC see him.

Birmingham seems to have quite an injury crisis right now, which is why there are a number of unproven youngsters on the bench for a critical cup replay against Chelsea.

Still, there's a whole reserve team to choose from and Packwood was one of the few called up.

Between Brooks and Packwood in the middle, the potential LBs like Cunningham and Ocegunda, I'm starting to feel really good about this cycle's defense.

Now if we could somehow pull in Adam Henley, we may really be onto something.

Once again just naming off all the kids who don't play in the US.

Oh stop it. Those are the most established kids so far in the U-20 pool on defense. Not exactly a lot of US-based U-20 defenders have stepped up here as of yet. In fact, the ones called into the most recent camp are still playing in college. When they do, though, I'll be more than happy to include them.

Packwood is dressing for a FA Cup QUARTERFINAL today against Chelsea. Brooks is a highly rated prospect who regularly trains with Hertha's first team and has made friendlies.

Cunningham has been sent on loan to Staebek to get first team professional minutes this year.

Henley's made appearances in the freaking Premier League and if he commits to the US, he wouldn't be all that far off the radar for the senior team.

If I decided to name the midfield and talked about Luis Gil or Charles Renken, or forward and talked about Omar Salgado would you feel better?

Re: 2013 U-20 World Cup Roster Thread

The way I see it, I following players are very, very likely to be on the qualifying team 12 months from now should their clubs release them

Cropper, Brooks, Packwood, Gil, Cunningham, Pelosi, Salgado, Bijev

All of them have nice contracts and are valued by their clubs.

Other players like Ocegueda and Kiesewetter don't have the pro contracts but seem to be heading in the right direction.

Henley walks into the team, of course, but he's very undecided on his future. I also think that Fabian Hurzeler will eventually fade out from the German program and be willing to play for the USA.

If you know some better U-20 defending options, by all means share them with us. I'd love to hear about them, because I don't know where they are.

There are very few pro options in defense for the U-20s. (which seems to be a trend considering the U-23s, probably speaks to something, but different topic)

    Mike Ambrose?
    Jalen Robinson?

I don't even think those guys have pro contracts.

The rest are college kids, which seems to be typical for US defenders. It also means they tend to develop late.

Plenty of good MLS talent. They are just all at the other end of the field.

You're missing the point. You have absolutely no idea how the US based kids would do if their roles were reversed. Maybe Boyd Okwounu would be suiting up against Chelsea if he were there instead. You have no clue if these kids are better than the American based kids, just that they play in Europe. I would venture to guess you've never seen a single player you mentioned play in a game that didn't involved the US YNT teams.

And spare me the "established" crap. They're "established" only because you've heard of them.

I'd feel better if you had any idea who the other pool players were and didn't discount them simply because they don't play overseas.

Quite frankly I don't give a shit who they play for in Europe...that doesn't mean a damn thing. Plenty of US guys are damn good defenders and they have also seen time at these camps.
