Well remember a lot of these players are college graduates, so sure some of them will give up their careers for a few years to follow their passion, but eventually they will move on (may be good for younger players) to what ever career they have a degree for. Also 47 % of Americans (15 and older, so working age) make less than 25,000. so 20K is in no way top 25 percentile, the top 25% make more than 50,000 USD Wiki link, yes I know, not the best. I guess I'm just not spelling things out clearly enough. Add $30,000 to $60,000 to $20,000 and you get a minimum of the $50,000 figure you mention....
I see you are talking about National team players, I was thinking all Women players, my bad. From NASL average pay for players is 3K that means about 21K per year (7 months). I would hope WPS caan match that in the future.
Again, you're not paying all 23 players. Nor are you renting dorms for all the players. It won't be as minimalistic as you find in the PDL, but you probably don't need to house but 25-35% of the players. As for insurance, that is one budget item I'm not clear on. A usual business is going to spend $300-$500 a person a month for usual full coverage, but that isn't pro sports and I have no idea what the limits of liability would be, nor the rates associated with it. Using the $500 estimate for all 23 players (here you do need to pay for everyone), for six months, you're in the range you mention. (I'd love it if anyone who has data on that could share it...)
True my numbers are for full paid professionals, but yes if you can get free players that would be better for the bottom line. That is how the new WPSL is going to work I think, some pro players, most amateur. I guess they will try that for a year and see how the crowds turn out. if they can keep the 3K average then this will replace the WPS IMO. If they see the average go to below 1K I think they will try to bring back a full pro WPS or just give up on women soccer.
Well, you could argue that the NASL teams are overpaying for players... although MLS is underpaying for players, so who knows what real market value should be... That being said, yes, that is a very realistic and solid goal, and would be a good foundation for a full First Division at some point.
