yeah but he hasn't been called up since november of last year. He played in the u20 WC last year as a left winger I believe

And if i say something thats bad is that he missed the last penalty spot vs Spain.

But he did score against Mali and played all the group matches :)
Played reasonably well against France as well.

A different story in this article. It claims Kim Kyung Joong got offers from Villarreal, Vitesse and 3 J-league clubs, but he chose Bordeaux instead.
And his contract is 1 year (not 6 months).

The other French clubs interested in him were Ajaccio and Caen.

I didn't realize Villarreal was in the relegation zone with Rossi hurt.

Bordeaux is far better than Caen or Ajaccio

    First reserve match is Saturday:

Well.... I did think that he deserved a shot a look after the u20 WC and lack of healthy lw. I dunno why he didn't at least get an olympic shot.

    1. He's not left footed--he's not even two footed. He's not a left wing.

    2. He's a one-way player with readable patterns. Today, it may only be readable, but tomorrow, it could well be predictable.

    3. He's very raw. In other words, he's one to consider for the future.

Kim has the rare physical gifts of a competitive track and field runner. He passed the youth level with flying colours just using his dribbling abilities. We have seen many of his kinds excel up to a certain age level then fall completely off the map. Now that he's finally tied to a professional club, Kim should seek to show that he doesn't fall into the 99%: It's not enough that he's good enough for the professional level, but he must also be someone that can be depended on to perform consistently night in and night out. France is like a manufacturing factory when it comes to Kim's style of players. If he shows sign of deviation, he will be replaced quickly.

Also, he's not getting his chance at the national team because he's not earned it. He had his run before the U20 World Cup under Hong Myungbo. Post U20, he got called up to matches against Uzbekistan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia and somehow failed to log a single minute. Hong Myungbo obviously had some intention on using Kim if he called Kim up three times in a row, so it was clearly Kim who failed to make something out of his chances.

Anyways, I don't mind Kim as a prospect--that wasn't the point of my post. If Choi Ganghee thinks Kim's good enough for the national team, and if he thinks Kim fits into his desired style of football, I will have no problem with the call up. My problem lies on the stupid, but popular notion that a player playing for a European club must always be made a national team player--the same kind of 12th century thought process our former national team manager had, which then contributed to the team landing in the pile of crap where it is stuck now.

The discussion of the national team around these players' forums should be minimized until they fully deserve it.

A player earns the national team call up with good performance and not by the emblem on his jersey. That is the one and the only way. It doesn't matter how many goals he is scoring at the reserves, how promising he once was, or how great his club is, if he is stuck in the bench, 'being at a really good club' isn't a strong enough reasoning to be a part of a team representing the nation--a previous stint of clear, distinctive greatness at another professional setting might pass for a reason, depending on the player. Yes, there are exceptions, but it's not sensible to toy around with the 1% possibility when there are other options available.

In any case, even if a player seems to be doing well, inconsistency is not rare among young players and it's even less rare to see a young player do well at an international scene whilst he's on his adjustment period back in his own club. Even the very best prospects, fully adapted to the senior national team duties, struggle after a transfer between clubs. I hope for the best for all of Korean footballers, but it will be awhile any of these players are truly ready to be part of the national team. This includes not only the recent transferees, but other players such as Suk Hyunjoon and Son Heungmin.

No, b/c he's terrible. I don't understand this move. Perhaps they can somehow fashion him into becoming a footballer - like what happened to DR Cha. If he has the intelligence, perhaps he can become a fullback. I don't know...

Edit: I see ksock pretty much explained why...

That was my recollection. Apologies if I mis-remembered. Its not like we have right wing filled either. And LCY ain't looking like he'll be ready any time soon either.

I don't disagree with any of your points. But on the flipside, we have guys like SJJ who are just as raw and inconsistent and flawed playing for both the senior and olympic teams. And frankly, IMO, KKJ played a lot better during the U20 WC than SJJ has ever even shown in spurts.

I think some people are always talking about the starting 11. We have the bench and reserves to consider and we're not a nation overflowing with talent that young guys that flash shouldn't be considered, especially in the context of the olympic team which cuts down on both on eligible players AND on expected polish expected.

Especially with the possibility that LCY will not be fully match fit by the time London comes around, one has to be more open minded especially in the lack of alternatives. People always shoot down these ideas without offering alternatives. On a senior side that had JDW in terrible form playing left, and SJJ on the right, why not.

That all said, in contrast to the vast majority in this area, I value club over country in the short run (given our probabilities of winning) and I'd prefer he focus on earning a more permanent role at Bordeaux for now.

I've also discussed this on the NT thread and dont want to derail further but CKR had LOTS of failings and I think European bias had almost 0 impact given that he's played LYR, KJW and SJJ over the European players.

    Has ever been? Seriously?

I don't know if you saw the U20 tournament in Egypt, but Seo Jungjin did a lot more than whatever it is Kim Kyungjoong did in Colombia aside from one odd, stand out performance against France. As I've explained, Kim Kyungjoong clearly had his looks at the Olympic level and he seemingly blew it. What more do you want?

While I would like to see more polished players than Seo in the national team, he is a much better prospect than Kim is. If you would stop sticking solely on national team performances to judge a player and watched a few K-League matches, or even Champions League matches, you would know this--you don't get selected to the senior team by being 'inconsistent and flawed'. Did I mention how badly nearly everyone in the senior team have performed over the past couple of months?

The squad going to London will only have 18 players and 3 wingers max. Kim Bokyung has one of the spots whilst everyone else is fighting for the other two spots--one of which could be occupied by a utility player playing another position. If he can't find playing time right now with 25 players, how do you suppose he make the bench in an 18 men squad? There is no room for Kim Kyungjoong, end of the discussion.

Ignoring that Kim Jungwoo almost never played under Cho Kwangrae, have you ever considered that Lee Yongrae just wasn't replaceable by the European players? Lee Yongrae was Cho Kwangrae's boy toy since their Gyungnam days, but if there ever appeared a single Europe based player playing his position--or if Cho found out Gu Jachul is a defensive midfielder--he would have been gone the very next day.

The fact is, he called up Suk Hyunjoon soon after he signed for Ajax and he did marginally same thing with Son Heungmin and Nam Taehee. He also called up Park Jooho a month after his move Switzerland and even had the balls to say "the bad habits he developed as a J League player must be gone by now."

Cho Kwangrae had his fetishes with Europe. You can deny it to death, but everyone else with a sensible mind saw this. To think that filling up half of the squad with inexperienced players or players failing to get playing time had zero impact on the results is simply absurd.

I think Kim has a much better technique than Cha does, but Kim isn't nearly as strong so defence probably isn't the position for him. We will see how well he understands the game when he makes his professional debut.

this speaks volumes for the KN footballers. The B level players are getting looks n chances and these are promissing.

on the flip side, the KNT level has not improved by simillar margin...frustrating!

None. But to disregard out of hand seems just as silly as selecting him for the squad just for making the reserves of a european side.

Obv you know that I don't watch any asian football and minimal youth due to a lack of time + logistics and perhaps SJJ is amazing over there but as you've mentioned yourself in relation to KJC, even if i did, it appears very hard to tell quality on a world wise basis.

And KKJ was exciting at many times in all the matches I watched in the U20 WC (I missed 1 but I don't remember which it was), not just one match even though we had major holes in offensive talent across the board. Obviously I wasn't the only one as he earned these tryouts (albeit perhaps with the help of Hyundai/Kia in this case) nor was I the only one who was impressed in these forums during the matches.

I didn't say he didn't favor European players. But that said, SHJ+SHM have hardly played for CKR. Yes I exaggerated on 0 impact, but compared to the other issues which are far worse... tactical naivete, people skills... and what I believe many people here conflate with his European bias, his loyalty to his "guys" no matter what club they played for or their form. JDW was chosen for the AC before he went to Sunderland. Same with KJC (with minor caveat of the whole young boys). Clearly CKR fell in love with these guys and wanted to find a spot on the team for them, despite JDW playing where he isn't NT caliber and being totally out of form, and KJC playing hurt and all over the pitch positionally.

EDIT: Finally, I didn't say he deserved a spot on the olympic team. Just a shot and perhaps HMB had all the info he needed but I was curious if there was a reason why.

i agree with skim its way to early to write him off especially after such an encouraging move like this where hes viewed as a long term project. while hes very raw so what? so we just doom him to failure at age 20? he wasnt one of our better players at the beginning of the tournament perhaps he became more fatigued as the tournament wore on?

    the pretentiousness reeks...

he has a year to show his worth. if he does well he will get an extension if not he moves on. what i ment by long term is that i dont think they expect him to supplant a starting role anytime soon.

He's only begun the journey thus any European bias talk is so premature because I don't think that even the most European biased of us would jump the gun on a guy who wasn't featured even in the club's news site, their fans' forums, or seen a minute even from the bench of a preliminary cup match.

Let him try to earn a spot with the big boys there first. For all we know, someone at Kia/Hyundai (one of the club's prominent sponsors) is just doing the kid a favor.
