The MLS will probably not add another team until 2014. Even if the comsos are the 20th team they have a few years before they start play in the MLS. does anyone know what the Cosmos plans are pre-MLS. I think they should start building up a team, sign some stars, young talent and use their academy players. set up a bunch of friendlies from all around the world, play in the World football challenge, and other pre-season tournaments, Etc. What do you think? do the cosmos have anything planned?

If it was PK still in charge, your plan would be something similar to what they would do.

Seems like these new owners are focused on MLS but I hear the PDL team is something they want to possibly do.

That was the plan of the old regime - could be something the new owners just pick up and continue

What stars or young talent would sign for a team that doesn't have a league to play in? If the ownership is serious about bringing back the Cosmos they have 2 choices: either make (and win) the MLS bid, or start from the bottom with a PDL team and worry about bringing in stars at a later time.

Maybe not, but when the announcement is made by the MLS that the Cosmos will be the 20th team some will.

Considering the money that Red Bull has, and continues to, invest in their franchise this is as likely as Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra kissing each other on the lips in front of a packed Old Trafford crowd.

More likely for Red Bull to buy the Cosmos identity.

Have you seen the many other RB names around the world? Do you not understand their mission?

And Garber makes it clear that regardless of Red Bull's doings, he wants another team in the area, specifically in NYC. There's a problem attracting big talent to non NY/LA teams. Having a NYC club will bring 3 more DPs into MLS...thus raising the status of the league.

Red Bulls' purpose in investing in MLS is to publicize their drink, just like it is with their other sports investments around the world. That's why they're willing to lose money on things like building RBA. If their team were named the Cosmos, that would not accomplish the objective of publicizing the drink.

    Actually, yes exactly. You see...

Which is why option 3 is a no-go.

The idea that the ownership of the Red Bull would rebrand its team to the Cosmos is about as likely as Virgin Airways bringing back Pan-Am and repainting their planes.

The whole point of the Red Bull soccer team is a cross branding effort to sell cans of soda. If that is not working effectively, they might very well decide to sell their interest. Again, I'm not saying it's going to happen, but the Red Bull cross branding, if anything, make it more likely they would sell out, not less.

Neither are likely, but if I was to go with one, then I'm with Metro they'll sell before they rebrand.

I never saw this post back when it was posted, but I would like to point out that this is not entirely correct. The sports drink is part of all this, but Red Bull's true objective is to publicize the Red Bull brand.

The difference in this is that the drink doesn't override all their other properties. Red Bull attaches their brand to everything they own to increase the exposure of that brand. The ultimate goal of this idea is to consistently increase sales of everything with the Red Bull brand because that brand is so popular, whether the product is sports drinks, sports teams, or whatever else they may decide to sell in the future.

Well to be fair - the Cosmos Copa was not PK - it was Spencer and Chris.

The academy - you could give credit to the West Academy - but the Cosmos were just a partner - sooner or later he would have been recognized by Chivas or the Galaxy (Not sure how the territory is split up in LA)

The only thing PK really did that was positive was show the world that the Cosmos brand still holds some weight on the global soccer scene. If PK did not buy out the brand and do whatever it is he did, we might not be talking about the Cosmos as a potential 20th team, but rather New York City FC or whatever.

I think we are saying the same thing.

PK had the vision to include a GREAT COMPETITION like the Cosmos Copa into the fold.

Same thing with the Academies. It was great vision to have such a set up EVEN if it would later have to be dissolved.

And like you said, PK made people realize that the Cosmos name still has MAJOR GLOBAL APPEAL.

Unfortunately, Sela Sports, in getting rid of Chris and Spencer has made a MAJOR MISTAKE and quite frankly a STEP BACKWARDS in the development of the Cosmos name in NYC.

Let's hope that they can overcome this and move forward.
