I don't know about the detail.
Everybody can have their own reasons.

    One thing is certain.
Belle will do a selection for new players on 4th and 5th in February.

According to the article on this blog (http://fightstart.blogspot.com/2012/01/whos-afraid-of-homare-sawa.html) Sawa has been asked if her new Player of the Year status couldn't scare potential future husbands (not me, for sure, by the way :p).

Did it really happen? When? During this press conference? (by the way, here Sawa repeats the stuff about Ohno who keeps calling her Sawa "Ballon d'Or" Homare :p):

Does japanese society is really made in a way that a man could feel some kind of an inferiority complex if he'd date a woman that's World's Player of the Year?

But UnePomme, when it is 9 together in the same announcement, it cannot be "their own reasons" - that is my point. It looks like a club action - do they feel these players are beyond their peaks, and that only with new players can they win the league? I assume it is not just money, because these players were not professional, and after all the club just got new sponsors.

Well, here is an excellent Sasaki interview.

Kyra, waiting for some video !

I don't think I'm the right man to answer this question because I'm not an ordinary Japanese.

But in my personal opinion, biologically men are born with pride while women are born with vanity.
So no matter how strong the society teach them reversely, such aspects could remain forever.

Don't mind my irrational and insufficient opinion so much.;)

    Why not?
    I don't understand.

    Iga did the same thing.

Some leaves, some moves, some retires and some comes.

Not sure if the answer is enough for me (and my cultural curiosity) in fact... :D

Anyway, unepomme, as far as you know did this answer to Sawa actually happen? (It could even be contained in the video I posted, or in the Zero News interview from some days ago, but, since I don't speak japanese, there is no way for me to ascertain that ).

Thnak you mumf, the interview recaps most of the things Sasaki said in previous ones, plus some new indo (it's interesting when he mentions the Japan-Mexico match at U-20 WC and he talks about "cat-and-mouse game". I wonder what does he have up his sleeve and if we will see something tactically interesting in the next games... :D).

I can't wait for friendly matches and the first round of nominations for the training camp with U-20 players. I also want to see if there will be some odd names from L-league in the first round of nominations. Let's hope for a great 2012.

(oh, and crossing fingers for USA to qualify at the end of the month. It wouldn't be really Olympics without USA as opponents).

Hey blisset, thanks for posting the link to the blog, always nice to reach a wider audience :)

Yes, the interview did really happen. It wasn't a press conference, but a piece on one of the morning magazine shows they have over here. Mezamashi TV or ZIP! probably. I have precious little control over the remote at the best of times, let alone first thing in the morning...

I missed the first bit of the interview and my wife filled me in. It was conducted by one of those vacuous eye-candy female announcers. When Sawa was asked about the boyfriend/husband thing she said words to the effect of "Well, you're my senpai, I'll let you go first." Senpai is usually a fairly respectful term for an older or more senior person (That's very rough, but it'll do for this). The implication here clearly being the 'older' part. Very nicely done.

As whether it would really be off putting to Japanese men, that's a whole other can of worms. Bear in mind who was posing the question and the 'light entertainment' focus of the show it was on. There is a whole issue with 'herbivorous' men with Japan, but I'd suggest there are men from every country who would have problems being overshadowed by 'the little woman'.

Hey, Kure Kamo, welcome on this thread! ^__^
We Nadeshiko faithful followers are a little community, so I guess we get all here, in the end, lol.

I guess I can figure very well this type of announcer... :p

Lol at Sawa being great both on the pitch and outside of the pitch... :D
(what an attractive "marriageable" woman, by the way... ^__^)

I am not sure about what you really mean by "herbivorous" here, but I agree that this issue could arise in many countries and I do get the "light" contest where it was raised. Anyway, I still guess there are countries where this could be more true than in others. For instance my country (Italy), as I said before on this thread, it's still a quite more-than-average misogynous country, although in a different way than yours country, I guess (I am supposing you are Japanese, if I got it right).

It's a universally known fact that Men tend to be intimidated by Successful Women. Men needs to be the more successful one, the one to bring home the bacon, the breadwinner. Men who live off women success are not real men.

This idea this transcend through culture, every culture.
Although in Asian culture, including Japanese culture, it is much more pronounce.

Although it's directly doesn't look like that. but indirectly, A World Cup winner, Ballon D'or recipient, FIFA and football highest honor would set her very high up the ladder. If she were to date and marry a less successful men who isn't on top of his field of work, then it would take a stab at his pride.

Actually I doubt it is no more pronounced in Japan than in western society. I say this because I feel that blissett must be mis-leading all the Japanese readers here ! It is a huge social issue in all western countries that successful women may not succeed in the world of relationships - because of their success.

blissett, you can google up a millions hits on this.

Was Sawa actually implying, that the interviewer was older and therefore she herself should hurry up and get married? And - was that "funny" or instead a serious "mind you won business" response?

Well, probably you all are right about the fact that it's a worldwide "human" social issue that trascends cultures, but I can assure you that, at least here in Italy, a question like the one Sawa received, in a public, although "light entertainement" contest, could have been perceived as sexist and near-abusive (and that despite the fact that, as I said before, Italy it's quite a sexist country, although often in some kind of hypocrital ways).

I mean: men's pride in not wanting to be overshadowed by their partner's success can be quite easy to understand and widespread, but I guess that not in all cultures underlining and publicy mentioning such a subject could be considered a polite, socially correct behaviour.
I mean: although it can someway be true that a successful woman can have some problem in finding a date or an husband (not always true, by the way, in my opinion), here in Italy saying this to a woman in public or in a TV show could be seen as quite offensive and be taxed with prejudice.

In fact maybe I didn't focus on the real issue: what striked me was more the question in itself, rather than the idea that some man could have been "scared" by Sawa's success.

(anyway, I don't think my pride would have any problem with her; for sure she could aim to some more successful husband than me, but if she'd ever happen to choose me, I don't think I'd feel any kind of worry... :D).

Yep, I was away watching Yuki play. :D

Potsdam only finished 4th at the traditional Jöllenbeck indoors tournament (3 Frauen-Bundesliga teams, one German 2nd league team, one team each from Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic and Netherlands).

But Yuki was elected MVP by the coaches.

Whether or not that was entirely deserved, I'm not sure, I found the overall quality of the tournament a bit lower than in the last two years. But she was no doubt good, even very good, full of energy, anticipating moves, running a lot, and she scored a couple of goals too.

In one of the breaks she was interviewed, and everyone loved her, as usual. She makes such an effort to speak German, and she has a pretty good accent and decent grammar once she gets her sentences out, but she still has trouble understanding the questions. Very adorable. ;)

She said that indoors football was not played a lot in Japan. Asked about life after the WWC, she said that people in Japan recognised her on the street and asked for autographs and pictures. She had only one week in Japan after the tournament, so she was on TV only once - when she told everyone that she'd gotten married. When she was asked whether there was a baby on the way, she said, "Not yet."

Speaking of adorable, Potsdam report that Yuki Nagasato got to christen a new breed of orchid, called "Anyuki".

Wow. The guy who cultivated this orchid was a Potsdam fan? Or a Nadeshiko fan? Or a personal Yuki's fan? :D

Sawa can be a Ballon d'Or, but she doesn't have a flower christened in her honour! :p

The orchid is from Thailand, but the place that organised the presentation in Germany is managed by a family whose daughter used to play for Potsdam as an amateur.

    Blisset -

Sorry, 'Herbivorous' is a bit of a buzzword in the media used to describe a seemingly growing proportion of Japanese men who are more interested in plucking their eyebrows than girls. That's not a coded way of saying 'gay' either.

    http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/fl20111217cz.html

I'm British, not Japanese, if that's relevant. I guess I should take more care proofreading...

Mumf - My Japanese is OK, but far from fluent. My take (and my wife, who is Japanese, agrees) is she was basically saying 'shut up' in a jokey manner. Not, 'hurry up and get married yourself' but, 'You're still single too, and you're older than me. It's a bit rich for you to be asking that, no?'

The question they asked Yuki (about making babies) is even worse !

The nationality is interesting - did you follow the WWC? Or the Nadeshiko before that?

Agree. I got the impression that the fact that she got married after the WWC was news to the interviewer, because he hesitated a moment and then congratulated her (which is a bit late, after all these months). The baby question was pretty stupid (and indeed everyone laughed, including Yuki).

Some article says that Sakaguchi will move to Beleza.

    Ooooh.
I guess it's obvious that this should weaken Niigata a lot (this season Mizuho was the real force driving the entire team) and should improve Beleza not a little: not sure if putting Beleza at the same level as Leonessa, but for sure it's a move in that direction (I mean: despite Leonessa'a flawless record, this year Beleza put up a good fight; they should do even better with Sakaguchi in their ranks).

Did they offer a pro-contract to her? This would mean that sponsor began re-investing in the team.

I'm not sure of the detail, but it seems the same as Iwashimizu's one.
So she still has to work partly, but her training environment would become much better.

By the way, Concacaf Olympic qualifier is now been held.

    USA 14-0 Dominican Rep.
Certainly the US, Canada and Mexico would fight against each other for the two seats.
