I actually think just going on a trip to troll a country for talent is probably a waste of time if your not doing it year round (IE dedicated in the field scouts). I would hope the process is more like:

    1) Use players agents to help identify the list of players are potentially available and interested in MLS.
    2) Use tape to evaluate the players and narrow yourself down to a potential target list.
    3) Use scouting trips to get a final opinion on wether that player should be acquired.

So im hoping they didnt go to Brazil and Sweden just because. I am hoping they went there to evaluate specific players they have already been tracking.

Weber wants out- naturally he wants playing time sooner than later, so not sure he's willing to be a bench keeper anymore. i would think we could trade him to montreal or seattle for a chance to compete.

Any word on the possibility of Kamani Hill joining the team?

Anybody got opinions on the impending lottery of Lee Nguyen? I saw him play for the US vs. China, but not much more than that. He's an offensive minded player, can play centrally or on the wing. (I think Hiddink was grooming him for the left midfielder spot in the central three of a 4-3-3 back in PSV). I dunno how he plays now though, guess it couldn't hurt to have more young offensive players on the roster.

Kamani was on trial at Hammarby in Sweden right before Thanksgiving, I guess still waiting to hear if he made their team. Sounded from interviews about it, he'd rather be there, but if he doesn't make the cut, he's coming to MLS. (I'm secretly rooting he doesn't make it, but don't tell him I said that)

My opinion is I hope we win the lottery.

Either of these guys would be an immediate improvement to our roster in the midfield/offense, and provide the speed Yallop apparently has become so interested in suddenly. They could help our team immediately, so I would be ecstatic if we could land either one. Seeing as how we just got rid of a bunch of cap space, money should not be an issue.

Neither player is a sure thing.

Nguyen is skilled and tricky, but small and may or may not be pacy enough. And I feel comfortable in saying MLS is a step up from the vietnamese league.

Hill has bounced around and hasnt actually been able to stick in Europe and get much PT. Now maybe hes struggled to find the right situation, or maybe he just isnt that good.

I think what worries me about Hill is the relative lack of playing time over several years. It really takes a toll on a young player and it takes months of regular play to regain fitness/sharpness. At least Lee has been playing; I'm optimistic that he can step up to MLS play and to some extent live up to earlier hype.

I couldn't agree with you more.

Also, I figured that Frank, JD, and staff would take this approach. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that might not be the case.

    What a frightening thought!

    GO QUAKES!!
FIRE FRANK AND JD RIGHT NOW!!!

Is there any possibilty the Quakes can chase down this guy?:

    [ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtDv5sveOqY[/ame]

His name is Bernardo and he plays with Vasco De Gama in the Brazilian League.

I've seen him play in the Copa Libertadores and he has good ball-feeding capability. He could be the CAM-type player the Quakes dire in necessity.

His skill, while good, isn't compatible for say the top leagues in Europe. The only Euro leagues comaptible for his skills are like the Greek or Dutch League (maybe French/German).

If the Quakes can entice him with becoming a superstar here and making him the Designated Player, he would be a big catch.

He looks good, but it's hard to get a guage from that over-produced video.. Looks like about 8 plays in nearly 3 min, including nearly 30 seconds of fluff at the start.

Actually he IS good, but he is probably too good / too expensive for us. He is on loan from Cruzeiro but that loan expires on 12/31/2011... so I guess we could try to get him on loan. He has 5 goals and 6 assists in 932 Serie A minutes so far. Transfer market value of 800k pounds:

So Leitch is gone to LA in the re-entry draft, and Weber, Andre Luiz, Peterson and Sealy are now free agents. I'm leaving them on for now with a note since some might b in negotiations with the team [fingers cross - Please not Sealy!]. We may actually have seven open senior roster spots and two off-budget at this point!

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Beta, Ring and Morrow move onto the senior roster.

Certainly Beta, who is clearly the preferred right back.

Hopefully ALM and Sealy won't be back, regardless of whether we fill their roster positions. I'd rather cut them and simply save the money even if we don't find replacements.

That seems like like good analysis to me.

We just added Marvin Chavez. I like this pick-up! He makes $50, and brings speed in an area we were slow in last season.

Yeah, in addition to the ones noted, I'm hoping the team either signs Gjertsen at a reduced salary or just gets rid of him. With the addition of Chavez and Salinas, Gjertsen isn't really needed, and certainly isn't worth the $83k he made this year.

I really hope they resign Gordon (assuming he's healthy, which it sounds like he is), as when healthy, he's a decent #3 or #4 forward. I'd think ideally they sign him at a slightly reduced salary as well. Although $95k for a #3 forward isn't unreasonable, so if they just exercise his option without renegotiating, i could understand it.

So the team has as many as 7 senior roster spots still open (if they don't sign Gjertsen). You assume they might move Ring and Beitashour to the senior roster, and then maybe one of the draft picks gets a senior contract. But that still means they really should be looking for 3-4 additional guys to fill out the senior roster.

Unlikely - the guys drafted would be most likely to fill open off budget roster spots, not senior roster spots. The team has two open off budget spots open now, and if Beita and/or Ring or anyone else is promosted to the senior roster, then there are additional off budget spots left. It's only likely that the first round pick would be pre-signed and thus be on the senior roster due to salary, unless they get a GA guy with that pick.

So MAYBE they add one guy from the draft to the senior roster, and they move up a couple from the off budget spots to the senior roster. that still leaves 3-4 open slots. Frank and Doyle and Ian still need to keep scouting to fill in the holes.
