    The Players Thread

    Ok, no name ... BUT:

On the way home from work today was listening to 1250/Chris and Jason were doing their show from the Riverwalk/MadDog's where the Scorpions girls are being announced.

Hitchcock came on and stated that "just hours ago we finalized the terms and signed our first player ... he's an MLS player"

Hankinson added: "He's a guy that potentially can be our captain ... he can go forward but he's going to be ready for the break of our attack falters, he'll regroup it for us"

So a holding/cdm ? Wonder who .... anyone have clues ? Also, Hankinson said that they're working on the contracts of 5 other players in addition to the one they've signed. He said some "South American" players were in that.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!! PLAYER NEWS ! :D

well there are countless numbers of MLS washouts and hasbeens and neverweres so guessing isn't going to be easy.

probably just wait and see is the best approach

i guess you could try and pore over the past two years or so of players who got dumped out of MLS and that play in CM ... but that might not turn up much of a narrow list.

On tWitter today, Scorps posted a pic of Hanky w/ a signed contract and a message that they would announce more later.

    Who?

This is not, repeat ... NOT a prediction, but could it be Pablo Ricchetti? He played for FCD in the CM spot. IIRC, he was recruited by Hitch (the then GM of FCD) and still lives in the Dallas area. So the relo wouldn't be a big deal.

He is 34, but he would bring a lot of experience. Question is: does he want to get back into the pro game? (Hmm... inquiring minds want to know...)

    Re: First players !

Kevin Harmse couldn't even hack it at the worst team in MLS, 3 games then out and the two years before that nothing with Houston and Chivas ... so ... uh .... yeah, not really very good but maybe NASL will be more his level?

Greg Janicki is also an MLS washout not getting more than a cup of coffee at DCU then the expansion Whitecaps. but he did seem to be decent enough defender at the D2 level with the Whitecaps. so maybe he'll do as a starting CB.

    Re: First players !

Well let's look at a few things:

1 - SASFC is a NASL club, D2, below the MLS.

2 - our players will most likely be appropriate to the club's level

3 - Janicki was the USSF D-2 Defender of the Year and in the USSF D2 Best XI in 2010 (and also managed 4 goals) ... so yeah I'd say he's more than capable for this level. Hell, he did get 8 starts this year with Vancouver in the MLS.

4 - Harmse has had injury issues lately but does have both MLS and international experience with the Canadian national team and with several clubs in Europe (training stints and playing).

    5 - They're both only 27

6 - They both have experience at the level they will be playing as a member of the Scorpions.

7 - This is the NASL we're talking about here ... the NASL.

So yeah, I like the signings. They both have a very attractive complete picture for a club fielding a team for the very first time in it's existence.

Why don't you go troll up somewhere else ? Or did we just lose the "where does this dickhead troll" lottery when your name came up ?

If this ^^^ were posted to a club's forum in MLS I would agree with you.

I think these were very good signings by the team. Build with an experienced defense and the team should have a chance in most games.

Keep up the good work Scorpions!

These are two great players. If you watch the MLS and the comings and goings of players, you would know that even good solid players get the cold shoulder because of inadequate management/coaching. I mean- some players get lucky and ride the gravy train to the finals, and others get hacked when terrible coaches get replaced by even worse ones (i.e. Vancouver last year).

With that said, Kevin and Greg will absolutely destroy in the NASL. I can't wait to see the opposition cringe if they try to attack up the middle.

    Re: First players !

Janicki and Harmse are not great players. If they were, they would not be signing for D2 for NASL wages. Some other MLS teams would take a chance on them if it were just bad management. Including Vancouver with Martin Rennie now in charge. But none did and here they are signing for a lower level. But that is not the point.

The point is they are fine for D2. Some players belong at a certain level where the pace is slower and less technical. Just because they couldn't hack it in MLS doesn't mean they can't be good in the NASL. Or even play themselves back into MLS. Ryan Pore did nothing for Portland in MLS and was a superstar when he was loaned to the Montreal Impact. Sinisa Ubiparipovic was awful for the Red Bulls in MLS, but was great for the Impact in the NASL this year. It's a lesser level.

You just can't judge a player based on what he did in MLS. Because any player succeeding in MLS is not going to playing in the NASL anyway. So you are bringing in guys who might not be able to play at the MLS level, but could be very successful at the D2 level.

Decent players for this level. Mentioning their MLS history is not a bonus considering both got cut by the worse MLS team in 2011.

However I wish that the Scorps had gone the route of naming a upcoming youth player or maybe a Mexican semi-retired player as #1. Maybe would have been a bigger announcement.

Oh well, got to start somewhere.

Should look into Davis Paul, he was cut by the FIRE last summer, but he is a decent left footed player.

On the Scorpions facebook page, a lady writes on the Wall, "so proud of you Jeff Jennings". Googled this player and he was with Ft. Lewis college as recent as 2009, he plays central midfield, and has a scouting report available online here.

Fort Lewis is an outstanding D2 college soccer school and Hanky was their coach after he was w/ the Rapids. Probably a good pick up.

I went to Fort Lewis with Jeff, but my last year on the team was 2005, he came in 2006 and started right away and was a 3 year captain of the side winning our 2nd National Championship in 2009. He is a very solid player, nothing flashy, just hard working, hard tackling with a knack to finding the net from outside the 18. Proud of Jeff as he is a great guy, with a good head on his shoulders. Y'all have a great player and a large fan base now out here in Colorado.
