I have recovered this old thread about the Italian championship to introduce the 2011-2012 season that started last Saturday with these matches: Sassari Torres 3 - Riviera di Romagna 0 Roma 1 - Venezia 2 Mozzanica 1 - Verona Bardolino 2 Chiasiellis 0 - Brescia 3 Como 2 - Tavagnacco 2 Milan 0 - Torino 3 Firenze 0 - Lazio 1 3 of the 4 supposedly stronger teams (Torres, Verona and Brescia) won their matches, only Tavagnacco, still recovering from the 0-5 against Malmoe , couldn't go beyond a draw against the newpromoted Como. An American w/ dual citizenship is/was the starting keeper for the Italian national team (Ana Maria Picarelli). Do you know what club she's with right now? I know she tried to find a summer playing gig in the USA but I'd think she'd want to keep playing over the fall/winter.

Anna Maria Picarelli is still in the NT roster, she has just been called for the upcoming matches against Macedonia and Russia for the Euro 2013 qualification. According to the italian websites, now she is with "Pali Blues Soccer Club"; since I don't know a football (soccer) italian team named that way, I presume it's a usa based team...
Pali Blues is a W League team that plays only in the summer. The season runs basically May-July. Many of their players still have USA college eligibility and return to their school clubs. That's why I wondered what Picarelli was going to do for the fall/winter. Surely she'll need to stay game fit?
The best and most well know womens soccer club in Frankfurt (1. FFC Frankfurt) are not the female counterparts to a male side, unlike the slightly less successfull FSV Frankfurt.

Not exactly, this year the Women League Commissioner (I don't know if it's the correct word in english, I mean the big boss), who is appointed from the football federation and not from the teams, enforced to create a "Serie A2", putting together the former Serie B, Serie C (partly), and the teams relegated last year from Serie A So now there are 4 groups, divided according the geography, with a grand total of more than 50 teams, thus putting together well-organized teams with national experience and super-amateurish teams that never played outside their region, but had just the money to enroll in this new series! At the end of the season will be 3 relegations from Serie A and 5 advancements from Serie A2, so next year in Serie A will be 16 teams, while, as far as I know, nothing is still decided about the destiny of Serie A2. These decisions went against the will of most of the teams, that would rather adopt the german bundesliga model, with a 12 teams 1° division and a 2° div. with 20-25 teams in total. In their views (and in mine, too) this is the only way for the italian female football to grow up, and for the teams to achieve a more professional feature...but until the destiny of the female football won't be in the hands of the teams themselves, I am afraid that will prevail reasons that have few or nothing with the sport I hope I had made myself clear, it's not easy to explain the enigma of the italian (sport) bureaucracy..
True, but Regional conferences make sense to save on money, I mean the less money the clubs lose, the longer they will keep on playing.
And the 2° div split in two? one north and one south? It's the same way the Swedish Wones Leauges is organized. But currently they are planning to join the two 2° div to one, since the quality and finances of the teams seems to be able to allow for it, but the final decision isn't taken yet.
Not exactly about the Italian league, but an interview with national team goalie Katja Schroffenegger (in German). She plays for USV Jena in Frauen-Bundesliga, and the reason her club is struggling against relegation is not Schroffenegger's excellent performance but the fact that they don't manage to score goals. I'd love to see her play some time.

It's funny to see, how she, as a Sudtiroler, marks (unconsciously, I think) the differences with Italian people, habits, food etc; no wonder that she choiced to go to play and study in Germany rather than to stay in Italy, where she surely could have big chances to join a top team (she had been appointed best italian GK last year, although playing in a team that at the end of the season was relegated). And I am saying this without argument, I like the girl and I perfectly understand her choice. Changing topic, last Saturday the NT won 9-0 against Macedonia, no needing to say without any cover from the italian media...2 days after some fan found out that the match had been broadcasted live by the macedonian TV and could be seen via web too ! Our federation didn't care to inquire about this so that nobody in Italy knew! It's unbelievable, I don't really know if to laugh or to cry...

No, I haven't nothing against Torino, but I am rooting for Riviera di Romagna (mainly because it's the closer team, has just been promoted and I would like it could be able to stay in Serie A next year too..) I was at the match and I must admit that Torino deserved the victory, it's a young team (I mean the average age of the players) with a couple of really talented girls, also in the U20 NT, who made the difference...
