Had he chance of watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition this last Sunday. What an awesome episode. Jonah Gomez is a cool little kid and one of the biggest RSL fans that there is. I loved when he said "These are my boys, this is my team". What great exposure for our team and community. As this season winds down, lets not forget who our boys are and who our team is (even after our 3 game losing streak). MLS Cup or bust! Anybody else catch this episode?
In addition to a new home they also received season tickets to RSL for life. Which, in time, can eclipse the value of the house. Lucky.
Great inspiring episode. I hope that Jonah lives to have a long healthy life. Very cool to see Kyle, Nicky and other RSL players and to see them truly appear to be genuinely touched by the events.
What if they make the sign and then don't win? That would be a huge disappointment for RSL not to live up to your expectations or the signs. If only they had beat Monterrey the sign for Jonah would have more meaning. I'm sure Bruce Arena would do a better job on the sign than any of us could.

I think this is great for RSL, genuinely. A lot of folks who may have never given the team, and MLS, a second thought now know much more about both, and very positively. And, it is obviously wonderful for the Gomez family. I wanted to watch it, really I did, I had been regularly searching my TV listings for this episode for the past couple of months... but... DW and I streamed the first 10 minutes, and we stopped... we couldn't handle the over the top emotionality of the mother and the Extreme Makeover crew. The mother comes out of the house screaming about how amazed she is and happy that Ty Pennington and gang are there, OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!... Am I the only one who recognized it was necessarily fake? Did the family not notice the boom camera set up they put in the front yard? I couldn't suspend disbelief... The crew talking about how the family has high bills and insufficient insurance and I wonder if they are just as concerned about the nearly 50 million Americans (over 16% of the population, many of them children) who don't have *any* insurance . I can't help but think about it's nice that one family is getting a really wonderful gift that will help them a lot... but what about the other 50 million??? I had a friend in the 1970s who, with his family, appeared on Family Feud. He came back laughing about "prostituting his emotions" for the TV show. I can't watch shows like this, reality shows generally, without thinking about that and how it feels terribly vulgar to me. So, while I think it is wonderful for the team and for the Gomez family... I also find it just awful. I tried to be a good RSL fan and watch it, but I just couldn't. Sorry.
Normal, everyday life doesn't play well on TV, ergo, "reality" programs are about as far from reality as you can get where the presence of the TV camera alters everything. Kind of like our society's version of the Schroedinger's Cat experiment.
I can't watch it either. Way too manipulative and fake. I do like that it's still called "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition", to differentiate it from the original Extreme Makeover, which was one of the most awful and shallow reality shows in the last decade.
This is true for about 99% of reality based TV shows. I'm a fan of a few reality shows but I'm not naive enough to believe that they are 100% unscripted. A close friend of mine interacts with the Gomez family from time to time and I can tell you that a lot of the interviews and "reaction" footage that you speak of were filmed after the house was bulit. They were sent to Disneyland, the house was built, the film crew left but they were told that wasn't the end of it and the film crew would return in a few weeks to film additional sequences that would require a little bit of "acting" from them.
Wait. Stuff on TV is fake or staged! Come on. Of course she was told to go big and act surprised X1000. That doesn't change the fact that she was genuinely happy every time the crew went the extra mile to find a potential bone marrow donor. I got a strong sense that while she was happy to get a new home and rental home to help her situation, she was even more happy that the MLS and Ty and crew did so much to find a donor. To not watch because of some misplaced feeling that she was overacting is silly. Were you just afraid to cry? It's ok, we all did. Jonah is an amazing kid. This is a very cynical outlook on life. Sure it'd be nice if shows like this could take care of everyone but that's unrealistic. It is nice however, that they do help where they can. Now I'm not going to overly defend this show or any other "reality" show on TV. For that matter, any show on TV really. But I will say this. ALL shows on TV over do everything. At the end of the day it's about making money, as is everything in this life. America's top export for making money in this country is entertainment. Not to watch something because of "prostituting his emotions," well, you shouldn't be watching TV or movies or really... Knowing a little bit about this situation, I can tell you that it's an extraordinary burden that this family is facing and is not on the same level as most of the 50 million others. As you know, many of those 50 million can afford, but eschew purchasing insurance of their own accord. There was an estimate that a relatively high percentage of those without insurance have car payments over $400 -$500/month. That's clearly not the case with this family. I'm okay with the sentiment about the show - they are selling a sort of fantasy after all. However, the positive impact that it will have on the Gomez family, and the tremendous efforts of the community to make this happen should not be overlooked.
