I was just wondering are there any soccer databases out there? With baseball I got a play by play database, a game log database, a pitch fx database. I was just wondering if soccer had anything like that?
A friend of mine is developing a soccer database which will be similar to the RSB for horseracing whereby users can set certain parameters and criteria so build and test their own systems and hit a button and it will spit out qualifying bets for dozens of leagues and I'm hugely impressed with what he's done so far. It will be ready within a month or so and it will be free! and will have data going back 30 years in it. BUT he keeps asking me what will people want to do with it. I've said there should definitely be an option to search head-to-head between any 2 teams. If anyone would care to post on here the sort of things they would want to be able to do with such a system builder I will pass it on to him and he may then incorporate it into the software.
The easy answer is no. The difficult answer is there is 100's but nothing as developed as baseball and nothing available to the public. My personal commercial database currently has over 500,000 lines of data some of the information is in this forum and some are on sites I have worked on, but the truth remains that the demand for soccer statistics has not reached (if ever) the same interest as Statistics in North American Sports. One interesting fact is because most information that does exist is still not in public domain people produce repeat materials so you have 100 sources of basically the same data if somehow the information could be streamlined I imagine the progress in creating a master database would be a much quicker progress with more exciting development. I like your site and the information you have on players. I have a question for you and others. Why is it that soccer sites have cool stats on players but you have to search each individual player? Why do they seem to not put it in a team format? Maybe it is just an American thing with me but I like to see team stats like in baseball so that I can compare players on a team. For example it is pretty cool to see shot percentage but if it was listed by team I could see quickly who is the best shooter or most disciplined per ninety, etc.

In my case its done because of resources and data protection. If the data was in a written publication i would probably show team stats as well. The problem with team stats is there easily scrapable for someone to steal them for their own use and with the way the internet works you can't just be cool about it. I must also say EPLinfo.com is a work in progress so down the road we might implament some type of team stats or at least team leader section that is shown in North American sports. That being said if a client wants the data shown via team stats it can be done so when that becomes avalible I'll add a link.

The site was first developed in the early 90's based on the newsgroup Rec.Sports.Soccer (Hence the name) and at that time it was probably the site I spent the most time on overall any other site. I still use it and know its users/developers but if thats the type of information you are looking for I think wikipedia has done a great job providing basic information.

There's a lot of 'behind-the-scenes' research done by amateur individuals to try to plug in the gaps left by the fact that FIFA does not have match reports for every game (despite requiring them from members in its statutes). Most of this stuff is not online, for fear that people will just copy it and take it for themselves, possibly replicating errors in the process. The FIFA.com database has literally hundreds (maybe even thousands) of matches missing from it, and has hundreds on it that should not be there.

While I recognize a lot of hard work goes into collecting these stats, I think there is a lot more value in the analysis of the data and the community could benefit from accessing it.
http://www.eu-football.info In this database you can find full reports of absolutely all official matches of absolutely all national football teams of Europe from 1872 to 2010, also you can view different stats by association, year, player, club etc.
i see lots of stat sites for soccer, but they seem mostly team-based stats, W/L/T, streak, GF/GA, that kind of thing. but, like you, i'm deeply interested in individual player stats. especially newfangled ones that do what OPS did to BA in baseball. yes, as a true oaklander, i've been converted to sabermetrics—go A's!!! for that reason, i liked this site: http://www.powerstats101.com/ it seems to have developed a way to quantify play and momentum in a game. not sure if it works or not myself, but at least they're trying. unfortunately, they focus on MLS/premiere. double-unfortunately, they seem to have stopped doing this as of july... this site seems to keep basic stats on players, but nothing that you can judge skill by, not base predictions on. a plus is that they do include argentine teams on their database: http://www.soccerway.com/ this one is for teams, but it has a lot of comparison-based stats (splits, if you will): http://www.soccerstats.com/trends.asp?league=argentina and this one has teams from europe only: http://www.simplesoccerstats.com/Index.html all in all, i'd be very interested in finding out more about the development of advanced stats for individual players in fútbol. if you have more, please share.
As previous posters have written, there are many soccer databases all over the web, but the information is very fragmented and the formats are not standardized. Historical data are more accessible, but we're talking about sparse data here (lineups, goals, successful penalties, disciplinary, substitutions). To make things worse, the data may not be very reliable in the pre-war era and/or in leagues in developing countries. In-match data is richer, but available for much fewer matches, and not available to the general public. It's true that MLB makes PITCHf/x data public, but baseball has a long tradition of publicly available data that describes all of the game events. Soccer's data tradition is relatively non-existent, and the data that are available don't give a clear picture of the match (aside from goals, and maybe not even that). In addition to the previously mentioned stat pages, I'd like to point out two others: SoccerStats (www.soccerstats.com), which provides high level match result information, and Football-data (www.football-data.co.uk), which contains historical match result data for selected European leagues going back 15+ years. There are some interesting studies you can do with those data, but the sites are created more for bettors, which is no accident. From my experience, European soccer fans who study the stats around the game are more interested in making more sophisticated bets. (Maybe American fans would have the same motive if sports betting were legal; they attempt to get the same kind of angle in fantasy sports.) I believe that data analysis is held back by the incomplete data in inconsistent formats in the hundreds of databases on the web. I didn't like any of the databases that were available, so I decided to create my own. Right now it's a framework for storing data, but if enough people find it useful then perhaps it could help form an open standard for soccer databases. To finish an already very long post, I believe that an open data initiative would be very beneficial, at least for historical data. Again, the major issues are: which database framework would be used, which leagues would you initially focus on, how far in the past would you collect data Depending on how far extensive this project would be, you're looking at a multi-year, possibly multi-decade effort with a core group of at least 20 volunteers and lots of funding. To give a comparison, Cricinfo, which is the world's biggest cricket site, had the goal of storing data on every first-class cricket match played, from the 1800s to today. They did it, but it took over 10 years, and fewer countries play Test cricket than soccer!
I had been looking around for a soccer database not disimilar to a football-reference (or any of the ...refence family) For example, I was thinking about Michael Bradley, and saw he has played in 150 top flight league games in Europe, and my first thought was, "Hmm, what American field player has played the most has played the most top flight games in Europe" without individually thinking of players and looking them up. I'm sure lots of people are curious about saber-metrics style numbers, but personally, I'm more curious of straigthforward data. I'm not a programmer by any stretch, but would love to contribute any way I can.

Hello all, I have been looking for great goal statistics. Over under .5, 1.5, 2.5 etc , first half and second half goals, exact goals , total goals etc etc . I like betting goals as I feel the outcomes are more predictable. I am looking for goals stats that will assist me in bet365 goals betting. I've been working on a database / website for the past year that organizes (primarily) North American soccer stats from today as far back as the first recorded soccer game in the Americas (1866). It's a large project, so some of it remains incomplete, but I've got comprehensive stats for MLS, NASL, and the first ASL, plus a lot of stats and game data for lower leagues, the Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions League, and a lot of other competitions as well.
