Given today's draw, I was thinking this would be a useful addition to the forum. A bit of an ambitious thread, yes, but I figure we post a lot of this information so it would be useful to have in one clearing house. Particularly, since we pay so much attention to CONCACAF and UEFA and seem to--collectively--have little knowledge of the other confederations when the final tournament rolls around, this would be a good resource when talking about the referees from other confederations.

Obviously everyone is free to post, but I'd like to keep the format the same for consistency:

Date - Home : Away - REFEREE (FIFA CODE)

Also, once the preliminary list of 2014 candidates is released, I'll make an effort to put the referee's surname in bold so that we can track them.

    CONCACAF SECOND ROUND
02.09.11 - El Salvador : Dominican Republic - RODRIGUEZ (PAN)
    02.09.11 - Suriname : Cayman Islands - SKEETE (BRB)
    02.09.11 - Trinidad & Tobago : Bermunda - PEREA (PAN)
    02.09.11 - Guyana : Barbados - ST. CATHERINE (LCA)
    02.09.11 - Dominica : Nicaragua - LEGISTER (JAM)
    02.09.11 - Canada : St. Lucia - MARRUFO (USA) [Morgante/Wienckowski/Vaughn]
    02.09.11 - St. Kitts & Nevis - Puerto Rico - ARELLANO (MEX)
    02.09.11 - Grenada : Belize - RUBALCABA - (CUB)
    02.09.11 - Guatemala : St. Vincent & the Grenadines - ANDINO (HON)
    02.09.11 - Haiti : U.S. Virgin Islands - CRUZ (CRC)
    02.09.11 - Antigua & Barbuda : Curucao - SANTOS (PUR)

I guess travel costs come into play with sending an American crew to Toronto. That said, given that almost everyone else on this list is a second- or third-tier referee in their own country, not sure why Marrufo is the guy with the whistle. Let the guessing continue, but I imagine this doesn't actually say much at all about the potential US candidate.

Another interesting thing to note here is that there are mixed crews in some of the matches, and some CONCACAF Elite referees are working as 4ths. Given the fact that there are matches 4 days later, it might mean those referees will have nearby assignments on September 6th with the same ARs. Of note, LOPEZ (GUA) is 4th in El Salvador, TAYLOR (BRB) is 4th for his junior countrymate, MORENO (PAN) doing the same in Trinidad, and BOGLE (JAM) is 4th in Antigua, with two Trinidad & Tobago ARs.

Of note, but probably not yet deserving of a separate thread... there is a meeting in Zurich October 18-19 pertaining to pre-selection of 2014 World Cup referees. There is some discrepancies regarding the exact details, which I am trying to nail down. It's either:

    A) A simple FIFA Referees Committee where the 2014 preliminary list will be decided and then announced shortly thereafter.
    B) A meeting of potential preliminary 2014 Referee candidates, where tests/interviews will be conducted and the list will be whittled down for later publication.
    C) A meeting of the preliminary 2014 Referee candidates, where they are all being invited and the announcement will be during the meetings.

Last time, the preliminary list got published in January 2008, so October would be a little early for that announcement. But FIFA has been making this earlier and earlier with each cycle.

Regardless, by October we will know which referees are in the mix. Whether it's a "preliminary" list of about 50-55 or a "preliminary-preliminary" list that is slightly larger is an open question. We are really only about 50 days away, so the specific USSF question about which officials get nominated should be answered sooner than expected.

Note that the Olympics is usually a major audition for the next (men's) World Cup, certainly a more final or semi-final list than who is "merely" doing a World Cup qualifier.

Well, my goal for doing this thread wasn't to necessarily say which referees would be going to 2014 based on WCQs. But major assignments in qualifying do certainly give insight into who is doing well and who isn't.

As for the Olympics, it's actually a mixed bag going back the last few cycles. Prior to 2004, it seemed like a lot of referees who were guaranteed to go to the World Cup got selected; most regions sent some of their best to the tournament in the hopes of getting them more exposure before the next World Cup. With 2004 and 2008, the Olympics became part of the official selection process that FIFA instituted. In other words, it was exclusive to WC candidates, as only WC candidates could be selected for the Olympics. We'll know the 2014 candidate's list prior to London 2012, and those selected for London will be from the 2014 list unless something changes.

London 2012 will be the first and only "preliminary" audition before the list is whittled down in the fall of 2012. You'll probably see a lot of referees go to London who would be on-the-bubble and need a good showing on a big stage. From Beijing, only 8 of 16 officials made it to South Africa (and 5 of 16 were cut from the list entirely 3 months after the tournament). As an example, UEFA didn't send any of its EURO 2008 referees to Beijing (like Rosetti, Busacca, De Bleeckere or Webb)--it sent: Einwaller, Kassai, Lannoy, Skomina and Stark... all of whom were considered second-tier in Europe 3 years ago, with the exception of Stark, who was shutout of EUROs because of Fandel.

After the list is reduced in late 2012, there will be four "official" auditions in 2013: U17s, U20s, Confed Cup and CWC. Every referee remaining on the 2014 list will go to at least one of those four 2013 tournaments.

Michael Hester of New Zealand has retired early: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10749056

Interesting that he notes the US-Egypt Confed Cup as his best moment ever.

By my count, that is now 4 locks or near-locks for WC2014 that have retired early:

    HESTER (NZL)
    BUSACCA (SUI)
    POZO (CHI)
    RUIZ (COL)

Hester's early retirement is good news for Peter O'Leary, as the path is now clear for him to be OFC's top referee. Pozo will probably be replaces by Osses. Things are a little murkier for Colombia and Switzerland. Colombia has Roldan, who has a good shot. Switzerland's next new thing is Studer, but not sure he has enough time to get ready for 2014; then again, one would imagine he has a well-placed backer at the moment.

Interesting, because at this stage, that's a pretty big game. Ward over Gantar certainly goes against recent trends.

It dawns on me that we are quickly approaching Vergara's last international match. Will likely be a qualifier given the way the calendar shakes out. No matter, it will be a quiet end to a prolific 18-year FIFA career. Wonder if he becomes involved in instruction at the CONCACAF or FIFA levels.

It's hard to say. I don't think we should consider this as a sign of a switch back to Ward...possibly CONCACAF is giving him a chance to at least partially get back into the mix. Ultimately, they have a lot of 3rd Rd/Hex games to throw Gantar at at their choosing if they want him as Canada's #1. I'll be interested to see if Gantar, Ward, or no one from Canada is on the FIFA shortlist for 2014.

As for Vergara, guess it will be a WCQ for his last match (possibly Club Word Cup, but unlikely, as they probably would be sending a crew to show them off to FIFA). Vergara is currently the Director of the Manitoba Soccer Association, so I'm sure he will stay involved, but at which level remains tghe question. Although, on the CWC, I guess it's possible that Gantat/Vergara/(Canadian/American AR) could go, with Fletcher replacing Vergara for shortlist, but I don't see that happening for numerous reasons.

Asia seems to spread the wealth around a bit more than other confederations. Mozaffari, a new name to me, gets a pretty big match insofar as potential progression goes. Same goes for Toma of Japan and Faghani of Iran, both of whom get matches, but don't seem to figure in Asia's top 10. Irmatov gets a big match for the Saudis. Other than that, surprised that we still haven't seen Matthew Breeze at all. I haven't read anything, but it might be possible he has stood down early, which would clear the way for Williams to officially be Australia's #1 (Breeze didn't go to the Asian Cup; Williams did).

Nice trip for the American crew, I would say. More assignments to come later for Tuesday.

Just because of the way scheduling was done, a lot of the "bigger" matches from this round, which will likely decide advancement, are home-and-home in November.

He's done several friendlies. I also believe he did a CCL qualifier last year but might be mistaken.

I think it's his first senior-level international match in official competition, though. Then again, those sort of assignments are few and far between (essentially just WCQs, Gold Cup qualifiers, Gold Cup, Confed Cup and World Cup).

Interesting to see Roberto Silvera over Martin Vasquez as the lone Uruguay referee. I've never liked Silvera from watching him over the years, but hopefully he makes us proud and doesn't ******** up too baldy. His nickname in Uruguay is actually "El Perro" or The Dog but I don't know why. Can anyone shed some light into this?

Also worthy of note is that this qualifying round there will only be 4 games per round, and with 10 member countries, 2 of them will not get a game each "Week" of qualifying (there are 2 games/team in every qualifying "Week")

I think it's partially luck of the draw for the first round of matchdays. Like you said, there are only 4 games per week available. However, Silvera did go to Copa America over Vazquez, so despite Vasquez's trip to South Afirca last year, Silvera might have the upper-hand.

After some digging, I recently came across a list of CONMEBOL Elite referees. This will be the list used to select WCQ referees. It's pasted below. Referees with an asterisk will either be forced into retirement before WC2014, are choosing to retire early (Ruiz) or are reportedly leaving the list early--at least temporarily--due to injury (Torres).

So this should mean all six of the USA FIFA's get a WC qualifier. Will be interesting to see if the pattern remains like 2010 for the next group stage (which you could argue is when CONCACAF qualifying really gets going) and the hex. Where the Mexican's games are concentrated on the top 2 or 3 refs while the American's games get spread out to everyone meaning our #1/#2 (can't really separate Mark and Jair right now) will get the same amount of games as someone like Vaughn.

I doubt it will be like last cycle. If you look at the assignments thus far, Aguilar, Moreno, Rodriguez haven't seen action at all. Nor have Pineda, Lopez, Quesada, Campbell, Gantar or any of the contender's for Mexico's #2 spot. Other than Wijngaarde and Brizan, none of the really "top" CONCACAF names are working these rounds--not just the Americans. It looks like there's been a choice made to keep the Elite refs on the sidelines until the next round.

I suspect you'll see a lot of Geiger and Marrufo, with maybe Salazar or Vaughn getting a game each along the way. Probably a similar workload for whomever gets deemed to the top 4 Mexicans. I don't think you'll see Jurisevic or Toledo past this round, but we'll have to see. Aguilar, Wijngaarde, Moreno and guys like Quesada and Lopez will probably dominate the assignments (of course, a lot depends on which Central American teams make the Hex).
