I have a question. For 2012 will the top 6 MLS teams get a spot, or top 3 from each conference? There could be a difference if things go the way they have.

    Top 6:
    LA
    Dallas
    Seattle
    Colorado
    RSL
    Crew

    Top 3 from each:
    LA
    Dallas
    Seattle
    Crew
    Union
    NYRB

It looks to be that the first three spots in both conferences that automatically go to the playoffs will enter Round 3 of next seasons US Open Cup.

True Jasonma, but I have a funny feeling that might have changed for next year. I could be wrong, but at the moment It might be that way.

While the original question was about MLS, the thread subject is broad enough to lump in the USASA and everyone else.

    Saw these tweets on theCup.us:

Can't believe there's already a final scheduled in Illinois.

This sort of slipped through the cracks, but due to the early start date of the Cup in 2012, the 16 PDL spots will apparently be filled according to a club's finish in the 2011 PDL season.
    http://thecup.us/report-pdl-selects-entries-for-2012-open-cup-no-qualification-matches/

So, the PDL's entrants should be:
    Michigan Bucks
    Chicago Fire PDL
    Des Moines Menace
    Real Colorado Foxes
    Long Island Rough Riders
    Reading United AC
    MPS Portland Phoenix
    Carolina Dynamo
    Laredo Heat
    El Paso Patriots
    Mississippi Brilla
    Orlando City U23s
    Kitsap Pumas
    Portland Timbers U23s
    Fresno Fuego
    Ventura County Fusion

It slipped thru the cracks because everyone ignored this post in this section of the US Open Cup. I posted about the Kitsap Pumas getting an automatic spot in Round 1.

It should be updated in this thread that all US-based MLS teams (enters in 3rd round), and NASL and USL Pro teams (enters in 2nd round) are in this tournament.

Remember back in the old days when we'd be talking about a bunch of MLS qualifying matches right about now? It seems so empty without them! :p

Do they still put under 19 teams in the US OPen cup. We used to do that when we had a team that would win our under 19 youth state cup. We thought it would be a good experiuence for them in their transition to the adult game.

That is when they could actually see how important a great team captain can be to the team not only on the practice field, but also in the game.

Orlando City SC & the Portland Timbers U-23's are in the 1st round. They are PDL sides. Don't know about U-19's but if they are a part of a NPSL or USASA sides, then yes.

More details revealed on new US Open Cup hosting process

As I wrote in a Facebook comment, I'm not sure I like those numbers. Going from my rough sense of where attendances have been for Open Cup games, this looks like a way for them to keep MLS teams hosting while claiming they're being fair.

Anyone got some figures to refute my rough sense?

    As I said on Facebook :) ...

Only a handful of amateur teams have hosted MLS teams and almost all of them are the Michigan Bucks and they drew at least 4,000 for all but one of their MLS games (Crew game in 2003 which was way up in Rochester Hills, drew about 2,500) - I think lower level pro teams draw at LEAST that for most of their MLS games. Granted, you're right, they have to pay the refs etc. but if you can't draw at least 1,200 fans and sell a couple hot dogs to see an MLS team play, then you don't deserve to host.

What do these rules say about hosting games in which the fans pay....zero? IE, tickets are free?

Im primarily referring to the Fresno Fuego who always draw 4,000+ for PDL games, but tickets are free.

Of course, weekday games would see lower number.

I guess that means the Fresno has less than 100K in gate revenues so they share nothing.

"The only consistency throughout the competition is the host team must pay the federation 15% of the gross gate receipts above $100,000. "

    from the link above.
