God, I'd love that. Stensland would play every match until she's 42. Or the World Cup is hosted by Norway. Whichever comes first.
Swedish newspaper Expressen writes today that the Swedish national team players get free food and a daily stipend of only 180 SEK per day (20 Euros/27 USD/17 GBP) during the World Cup. While the male players would have got 850000 SEK for getting through to the quarter final in WC 2010, the women got 40000 SEK. Rumour has it that the US women, if they get gold, will get 1 million SEK, FIVE times as much as the Swedish players' maximum of 200000 SEK. The Swedish federation doesn't seem too happy about details being revealed, but are muttering about future increases. Who knows, maybe they'll even hoist it to 200 SEK a day for the European Championships on home ground?
Well it is a issue of prioritizing, Swedish FA prioritizes to keep youth soccer free and expanding (and keep their own administration working), that means that payment for the WNT (and MNT) will be small compared to many(most?) other nations. US prioritizes to keep a well salaried WNT (and keep US Soccer administration working), which is one of the reason for the pay to play model. All in all I think the Swedish priorities are better in the long run, but it is sad they can't find the money to pay larger player bonuses.
Swedish federation priorities: the men got 250000 just for being called up for the Euros in 2008, the women got 20000 for making the squad for WWC 2011. I'm sure there's a smidgen of room for reprioritising without youth football going bankrupt.
One point of order on the US travel club pay to play model. It was in existence long before the USWNT players fought (and went on strike to win in good union fashion) to get the financial support they have now for camps, friendlies, and so forth. And the amounts the US men's team would earn for group wins, quarterfinal, semifinal, or gold are MUCH higher than what is in the USWNT contracts. Even if the USWNT players made half what the Swedish women will make, that monetary difference would just be drops in the very large bucket needed to try and change the travel club business. And would weaken the women's game in the USA (seeing as how our pro league & semi-pro league set up is fubar & doesn't get USSF support in any financial way) To mention nothing of the political near impossibility of trying to take away the (very lucrative) club directors' and club presidents' fiefdoms. Hell, they could fold the USWNT and all girls' Uxx teams tomorrow and that wouldn't change the pay to play club model.
Try Germany: DFB should now have a decent budget underspend which they could redirect north. They were going to pay each player EUR 60,000 for winning the cup. Going out in the quarter finals is cheaper, at EUR 15,000 per person.
Based on their performances against the "competition", I would hope even the Maltese make 5 times as much as them .
We haven't had a tournament in a while, so here is another: The 5th CISM Military World Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro from 16 to 24 July. The women's football competition will be played in two groups: Group A: Brazil, France, Canada Group B: Germany, Netherlands, USA For Germany, coach Kerstin Stegemann has nominated Conny Pohlers, Bianca Rech and Lisa Weiß and 17 others.
The French team has no big name and 1 former international player Diguelman http://www.footofeminin.fr/Autres-selections_r87.html
I think it is. She had gotten herself back into the squad (while still being a lawyer and playing for SFK) and then got injured. I think she really does want to move on this time.
Arna-Bjørnar have signed ex-Herford and ex-Jena goalie Tessa Rinkes, and Atlanta Beat player and U23 international Katie Bethke. But they've got Skarbø. So Rinkes can hope to be a No. 2 at best. (Sitting in the stands in Herford when she was playing, I remember hearing occasional unfortunate comments to the effect of "Oh, it's the fly-catcher again". And I remember thinking that they had a point. She does have a junior national team background, though, including winning the U19 WWC in 2004.)
We don't have a specific Norway bashing thread, so here it goes: My condoleances to the families of the people lost in the terrorist attack/ madman massacre in and around Oslo. I hope that no Norway WNT players are politically inclined and thus out there at Utøya.
I second that. If they ever needed an excuse to stop Prairie Home Companion, now they have one. Norwegian bachelor farmers? Just not funny anymore.
Thank you to hagabo for speaking for many of us, I'm sure. I was making silly little comments about Swedish music elsewhere and suddenly realized this kind of cuts close to home. In the international women's soccer community we are especially aware of our ties to Norway and it is a terrible shock to see this happen to our friends. We can hope, Norway being the wonderful place that it is, that this is a very isolated incident and they may recover soon from it.
Ugh. Awful what happened! What is it with the menz and the gunz? I firmly believe men should not be allowed to own weapons.
Condolences for the Norwegians and all the families that lost loved ones. The shooting and bombings were bad enough, but I was absolutely shocked at the number of dead on the island. It's up to 85 right now. Poor Norway. Y'all didn't deserve this.
One of the Arsenal Ladies player just twitted that the team will tour Japan for 12 days in November : "Did i hear someone say we are going to Japan in November for 12days?! Happpyyyy days!!!! #arsenalladies"
