Sharks also picked up Handzus, who is an excellent center.

RC is Yakupov going to play in the next World Juniors? Also, what's the general consensus on Kuznetsov, Orlov, and Tarasenko?

Yakubov if healthy and selected by the coaching staff (Russians often go on seniority and don't pick underagers, will play.

The basic assumption is that Tarasenko and Kuznetsov will be impact top six forwards in the NHL, in thar order. Orlov is harder to project but the capitals are high in him as a Sergei gonchar like player.

Top six means on the top two lines of their teams. It means they are talented and will be skilled scorers.

No, he's not. I think Kulikov is already a better defender. But, as an offensive defender - maybe.

P.S. Jovanovski was just signed by the Panthers. I do not know what he looks like 12 years after leaving the Panthers.

    Kulikov isn't better, .... Yet

Jovanovski was decent for the coyotes. He's obviously aged and not as good ad he once was but he'll help the panthers.

Now, the Panthers still need to upgrade the offense, which is anemic and address questions in the net

Nevermind, Panthers just signed Scottie Upshall, Tomas Fleischmann and Kris Versteeg and the aging net-minder Jose Theodore.

More mediocrity has been guaranteed. Other teams sign impact players. We celebrate 20-goal scorers who would be on the third line elsewhere.

On the other hand, there will be enough bodies to fill the newly unveiled jerseys for the season opener 1-2 loss.

That's the only good signing thus far.

If you think this jersey looks a lot like the original red Panther jersey - you are right

Late Edit: Matt Bradley has just been signed by the Panthers.

Well they aren't going to win the Stanley Cup by any means, but I can see some progress being made to make them a better team. They will certainly be better than last year, just with the pieces they have added to a team that was nothing last year.

The only real lose they sustained was Vokoun. But they will need Markstrom to prove his worth anyway, because Vokoun wasn't a long term answer for them.

They still have a strong core group going forward that really should be the basis for finally making the playoffs and sticking around if managed right.

Gudbranson and Kulikov should stabilize a back line, which with only a few more components could be a real strength.

Markstrom, if he reaches some of the estimates that people have laid out for him, should be a solid net option. But goalies are notoriously difficult to project.

Hubeardeau gives the Panthers a future 1st line center, with elite offensive skills, but he is at least two years away.

If I'm a Panther fan I'm excited to see what Markstrom and Gudbranson have this year. I'm also happy that unlike the Avalanche, their GM is not a ****** idiot and trading away first round picks for unproven players.

Vokoun could have given them 2-3 years (that he will now give to the Caps) Markstrom is a question mark.

    Gudbranson is an unknown quality.

    Markstrom is an unknown quality

    Huberdeau is an unknown quality

GM is the only advantage Panthers gain and that already happened late last year. Pardon me if I disregard rookies - they're nobodies at this point. Whether their contribution will be felt or whether we may never see them again - the future will tell.

On the balance, Florida Panthers have just traded a bunch of 30-goal scorers late last year for a bunch of 20-goal scorers in the free agency.

Florida Panthers have also gotten older.

There are no unknown quantities in hockey at this point. Players are extensively scouted and there is a pretty good idea what they will become.

Have you ever heard of draft busts? Panthers have had quite a few of them. In the first round and beyond.

I'm not really sure you can call anything beyond the first round a draft bust. I mean, the basic rule of thumb is that you want a bona fide NHLer from your 2nd round picks 50% of the time and after that any NHLers are gravy.

Mike Brown, Florida Panthers' 1st pick in 1997 did not end up playing a single game for the Panthers (he did have a good enough NHL career)
Denis Shvydki was Florida's 1st pick in 1998 (His entire NHL career was 11 goals in 76 matches)
Lukas Krajicek, Panthers' 2001 second 1-st round pick appeared in parts of two seasons.
Petr Taticek, panthers' 2002 second 1-st round pick has had a lengthy NHL career of 3 (THREE) games.
Anthony Stewart, Panthers 2003 top pick scored 4 goals in 4 seasons for the Panthers before moving on to have a half-decent season with Atlanta.
Kenndal McArdle, Panthers' 2005 top pick has played 33 games in the NHL in 6 years.
Keaton Ellerby, Panthers' 2007 top pick has so far played 76 games (and 2+10) in parts of two seasons. The jury is still out. The production is kinda scarce for the #10 pick.

Florida Panthers have had 20 1st round picks in their history. Only 2 have become significant players (J. Bouw and Jovo)

    This is good news...

Galchenyuk to lead U.S. team at Hlinka tournament

Looks like he's eligible to play for the US, Belarus or Russia. His father played for Dinamos Minsk and Moscow, as well as both the USSR and Belarusian NTs. If he's leaning on playing for the US, that's a real coup, this kid seems to have a great skillset and a nose for goal - virtual lock to go top 20 in the '12 Draft.

    here's a further writeup:

There is some debate right now, and it is extremely early to do so, that Galchenyuk might be drafted ahead of Yakubov because; Galchenyuk is a center, and teams value them much higher than wingers, and because Galchenyuk is a two way player. If he finally ends up suiting up for the US, he projects to be probably the the long term #1 center on the depth chart (currently Ryan Kesler imo) and is certainly the best American prospect since Patrick Kane. Apparently Igor Larinov, who is very unhappy apparently with the Russian hockey world, and is Galchenyuk's agent, is pushing him to play for the US.

Why though, I must ask, do you want him to play for Belarus?

A lot of people in North America seem to have views on the KHL which range from dismissive to fearful (which ironically sort of mirrors many views on Russia from Canadians and Americans, but I digress). Here is an article that fits in with my view that the creation of the KHL is a GOOD thing not just for Russian hockey, but European hockey in general and for anybody other than the Don Cherry Party of Canadian Nationalists, or Anybody Who Isn't Canadian Should Never Play Hockey, But Americans Sometimes Can Do It or DCPCNAWICSNPHBASCDI as the acronym goes, it is a good thing as well.

Don Cherry's idea of what hockey should be is out dated even for Canadian fans. Most Canadian fans nowadays prefer skill over roughness, I know this for a fact.

Khabibulin might not have been a superstar but he did win a Cup.

hey RC, what's your opinion on Grigorenko? I seems like a sizable number of fans consider him to be a bigger talent than Yakupov.
