As much as I don't consider the FIFA rankings so important, I have been reading a lot of articles where Mexico has been given the respect, as far as being called the#1 team in CONCACAF by American Journalist (which we all know they are), however in the comments section the USMNT fans keep saying how could the #28 team in the world could be anything more than that and how they could be the #1 team in CONCACAF. TO ALL OF THOSE EAT IT #9 http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/lastranking/gender=m/fullranking.html
enjoy it while you can. with the team we are taking to copa america, we would be lucky if we are still in the top 10 by next month.
Isn't the Copa America squad being labeled as a u-23 squad in a non-official competition(for Mexico)? I was assuming their performance wouldn't have an impact on things like these.
copa america is not a u-23 tournament. the u-22 is just happening to be representing the senior team... which makes it count.
Guess that makes sense. Just another reason the FMF shouldn't have agreed to send a U-23 squad, this directly affect our chances of getting a seed for the WC.
I think Mexico is one of the top 12 teams in the world. Look we have made the round of 16 in the world cup the last five times . We have won the Gold cup the last two times. We have finished third in the last Copa America. I know a lot of people might not agree with Mexico this high but if we look at it the only team that Mexico has trouble with Argentina which has problems with Brazil which has problems with us. We have shown during the last five world cups that we are between the 9th and 16th best team in the world and know it is time to make that leap into one of the top 5, hopefully this generation of players can do this for us.
Assuming they count our Copa America games (they didn't count the U22 friendlies), Edgar has determined we'll probably fall back to 19 next month.* http://www.football-rankings.info/2011/07/fifa-ranking-july-2011-probable-ranking.html *-He uses an adjusted ELO (since U22) to determine who wins each match this month, so he has us beating Peru, losing to Chile and Uruguay, and losing to Argentina in the next round. The teens are so bunched, we could be a little higher if we also get a tie from either Chile or Uruguay. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of rankings, but FIFA and the confederations do use them to determine seedings, pots, etc., so if y'all going to be writing about them I'll contribute my two cents.
Exactly, this is the only reason why i care. With Brazil being host next WC they leave a seed up for grabs. If Mexico can hang around 10-15 maybe we can take it.
If we're decent, there's a good chance. We were next team up in 98, and 02, and were a seed in 06 (all under the combined rankings and WC results system). I'm sure FIFA will modify the seeding rules according to what suits them best (like last year), but I also think it's a 50/50 that they allow 6 European seeds. So if they only allow 5 European, then we get to fight for that last non-European seed with Uru/Chi, maybe CIV or Aus/******, depending on what is politically convenient to FIFA at the time.
Mexico drops 2 spots in the new rankings. They are now #22 in the world. Why the hell they calculated the CA team!? (rhetorical question) I think we are a top-15 team.. http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html
The ESPN Soccer Power Index bases it's index on the strength of each A team presently (not with a big weight on 2,3,4 years ago), they have el Tri at 9th finally ahead of Chile after merely having to beat them twice... http://soccernet.espn.go.com/spi/rankings?cc=5901
That's just 4 rankings apart, whichever ranking you choose to go by, the beauty of it is that Mexico is seeing an upward trend in quality and competitiveness that will likely show through in all rankings this year and next year and the year after that... Plus at the next ranking by FIFA there may be a post-Serbia bump (also depending on how the competition did). Either way the team beat bosnia 2-0 and Serbia 2-0, so I think it's clear that this year Mexico is stronger than the rankings suggest.
Also, ESPN has Mexico ranked #9. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/spi/rankings?cc=5901 FIFA hasn't updated their rankings yet..
That would be so boss if we had a solid Confeds and shit on the WCQ teams and ended up seeded come the WC....basically we would avoid one of the elite teams in the group stage and make shit way easier for us.
hopefully that's the case. we need to do well in friendlies as well, especially against the top 10 if we ever end up playing them. the important games though are the qualifiers, but the real turning point will be the Confed Cup. epecially since it's only a year before the actual WC and a few months before the draw.
