I do belive DC needs a 'hard man' on the field. I would love for him to be the starting CB next to Jakovic, but if he has no interest in sticking around DCU for the long term, I wouldn't let him play. The team seems to be committed to building this club as a contendor for next season. I hope they can convince McDonald to stick around. Otherwise, I expect to see him riding pine.
That's an awful short view. Think of what good he might be to help push a younger guy like White in training, so White doesn't have the pressure of learning on the job as much, but prepare him by watching in games and competing in training for that pressure next year. There are numerous advantages to bringing a guy in for just one (half) year with his "replacement" waiting in the wings. Besides, we need bodies to rotate for everyone's health and well-being.
Agree with FB. A the end of the day, almost all the time, you have to select the best player. If everything else is equal, okay maybe the tie goes to the guy that needs the experience for the future. Otherwise, you always choose who is going to do the best job on the field on that day.
I hope you guys are right, but I tend to think that White is better of getting those minutes instead of watching them go to McDonald. We only have 90 minutes at each position to hand out and McDonald will take those opportunities . I think the playing time White has received this year has helped him improve. His distribution skills, while still lacking, have improved during the season. I see White winning the ball and attempting to distribute more often (as opposed to hoof it).
I would also prefer White to play in a little under/around 45% of DC's games to get those valuable minutes. I would prefer he had not already reached that milestone for the 2011 season I really think with all the young guys, we really need some rotation back there. Especially if it is not done because of injuries but because of competition and defensive match-ups instead.
If Kitchen still logs more minutes as a CB I think he needs to bulk up some. He is too small to deal with some of the larger forwards.
The Quakes still have three good CB's with BMac gone. As BMac said when he joined DC, He stated to the effect: I want to get my teammates respect (at practice) before he plays. The MLS is a business. A business in which a development year does not count as a regular year even though you play most of the season and are in the first 18 the rest of the time when not injured. I am sure when he scored his GOTW that first season, the MLS did not put an asterisk by it. He should be chasing his dream overseas already. As they say: trust me that you will like his play and if he is not playing, DC will have a very good person playing in ahead of him. That is a win win proposition for DC.
I bet that the biggest beneficiary of these two recent moves is Najar. Tha addition of DeRo, obviously, will attract more attention to the middle and make it harder to double Najar. But in addition, McD will push Kitchen back out to right back, where he is a more potent offensive threat than our other options out there. This means more overlapping runs and someone to provide width when Najar pinches inside. If opposing defenses have to defend DeRo and honor a real threat to get to the corner and put in a cross, Najar should become much more effective.
