This could be a match made in heaven for poor suffering Chivas USA, Not too sure about the name though. There's a solid foundation in place and the owners are so much alike the latest MLS owners.

Realistically, I think the past few round of expansion has proven that a city is much more likely to be "promoted" from USL (Toronto, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver and Montreal) than "awarded" (Philadelphia).

So the ball is up in the air for any USL city. Get people out to the game, and you never know who's interest may be peaked.

I would love to see Chivas USA relocate and rebrand, but I don't see how the Scorpions fit in. How would the two ownership groups combine? Garber is saying that if San Antonio does well in the second division like Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, and Montreal did, then you never know what could happen. But that doesn't mean Chivas USA will relocate and combine with the Scorpions.

Either way, I like the Scorpions name over Chivas USA, so I wouldn't mind seeing San Antonio in over Chivas USA as long as they have a plan for a stadium and draw a good crowd.

San Antonio could indeed be a location for a MLS club in the future but not for Chivas USA.

I'm impressed with how Chivas has dealt with not becoming an immediate runaway hit as many expected. They haven't taken their ball and gone home but instead dug in for the long haul even exploring building their own stadium in SoCal.

The one inexplicable aspect of their operation however has been their refusal or inability to get a steady influx of big time Chivas/Mexican stars on the roster. One would have expected that as soon as players on Chivas Guadalajara turned 31 or 32 they'd automatically be candidates to go north. Bravo to KC was a head scratcher.

Unless San Antonio really wows in the NASL (I mean, Montreal Impact level of wow) or someone comes and throws a ton of money at them, I don't see it. The Don would want to put teams in several other places before putting a third team in Texas.

That said, I think the Alamodome is an underrated potential venue.

Not exactly the way it happened for Toronto and Seattle. Both averaged 2-3,000 a game in the USL for over a decade. Market size and money spoke louder.

I keep hearing the Cosmos are team #20 once they get their finances together for a stadium and both Minnesota and Atlanta will get franchises if both NFL teams are successful in getting their outdoor stadiums approved this fall as both NFL owners want to add MLS teams to share their stadiums using the same model as Seattle. As for Chivas, i don't see them moving anytime soon.

All three are really just wishful thinking. In the case of the Cosmos there's more hard evidence, but the only kingpin source of funding identified thus far is Fred Wilpon. And he can't do anything until the Bernie Madoff lawsuit is resolved at the very least.

As for Atlanta and Minnesota, we have little more than an acknowledgment of interest from MLS. And ITTET, neither of their connected stadium projects are sure bets.

You could have entitled this thread, "Could DC United future be in This City?.." After all, there is at least a little bit of a reason to believe that there is a chance that DCU could move. CUSA, not so much.

As far as Chivas USA goes, I keep hearing about Fullerton being used for non-MLS matches. I've been up there several times the past two years of my current stint in California. Still haven't seen Titan Stadium, but it looks good in pics. And a move to Orange County would still keep it an L.A. metro team.

Brandingwise, I got no problems. It's unorthodox, but not unheardof in other countries (Orlando Pirates Windhoek, Ajax Cape Town, etc.). I will say I don't like how El Paso did it. Either be Chivas El Paso or El Paso Patriots, not Chivas El Paso Patriots.

Funny you brought this up, I was at the Blues-Galaxy game at Titan Stadium Tuesday night. It looks pretty easy to expand into a full horseshoe configuration. I even mentioned that to someone. I figure it would seat about 15,000 if they filled in the whole northend with seating. You could also put in temporary seating or standing room at the southend by the lockers. It's a really nice venue for what it is, you sit about 10 feet from the lines, grass right up to the seats. CUSA could move there with minimal time/cost.

Fullerton Stadium would be horribly inadequate for an MLS team. Sure, it could be expanded to about 18,000 seats, but that's it, it'd only have seats.

The two examples you give are completely different. The Namibian Orlando Pirates have no ties to the South African club, and simply use the name.

Ajax Cape Town is a feeder club to AFC Ajax. The two clubs are not in direct competition for players, are not in direct on field competition (the only place they could possibly meet is in the Club World Cup), exist in two separate confederations. Ajax CT wasn't created and marketed toward Dutch expats in the Cape Town area.

Chivas USA is unique in the way that it tries to market itself as a Mexican team despite playing in an American league, with it's stadium in the US, with American players. Can you name another club that does something similar? I can think of a few, including Albirex Niigata in the S-League, but all of those leagues have something in common in that they are small leagues. MLS wants to grow, and having a feeder club in your league retards that growth. How does it appear when you've got a "reserve" team of your main geographic rival in your first division? The name itself has very little to do with what's wrong with the club. What happens in 50 years (or 5, 10, 100 years, whenever/if you think it will happen, the time-frame is not important) when MLS surpasses the Mexican league in quality? Does Chivas USA become Chivas and C.D. Guadalajara become Chivas Mexico? The S-League will never surpass the J-League, simply because of country sizes and population (though things like that could possibly change, so I guess never is a harsh word), and I'm sure the S-League brass doesn't have grand delusions of being the best league in Asia in the near future.

I also personally hate the ethnic pandering. One of the best things about Southern California is our diversity and blend of cultures and I think creating divides based on race is bad on so many levels.

Not to mention the arrogant attitude they came into the league with, assembling a bunch Latino players and expecting to dominate our shitty little league.

It makes me sad that poor Robin Fraser has to taint his resume with that club just to get his start in management.

That being said, they ponied up dough at a time when no one else would, so hats off to them for that, but simply because it was a good decision 6 years ago doesn't mean today it is still a good decision to keep the club in it's current form.

The latest news has Chivas looking into building the stadium in Santa Ana. They had looked at Santa Ana in 2007, but with little response. But, since the recession seems to be coming to an end the business community in Santa Ana is warming up to the idea. Word on the street has it that a decision should be coming within the next 60 to 90 days on Santa Ana. If this becomes reality, I can envision a move to the new the stadium with no need to rebrand.

Why? Chivas USA is still a horrible idea whether they're in Carson or Santa Ana. Hispanics in Santa Ana may go to a couple of games at first because it's closer to them, but that organization needs a brand and following that will be there for the long haul, and I don't think Chivas USA will work. They could use a name and identity that represents Orange County. That would be much better for the brand than keeping Chivas USA. An Orange County/LA rivalry would be great.

If there to be a rebranding for a move to Orange County. The "Santa Ana Winds FC" would be awesome. BTW, they currently have a working agreement with a PDL club named the Santa Ana Winds FC.

Dunno about that... this might be one of the few names worse than Chivas USA! The Winds? It wouldn't be my team, but I cringe at the thought of having to support a team called the Winds.

I'm just saying it more as, anything is better than Chivas USA. It's not like the team is really going to change to the Santa Ana Winds.

But, if you think about it. For someone who lives in Orange County, the Santa Ana Winds is the perfect name. For those who do not know the Santa Ana wind weather pattern is a part of life here.

Oh, I know the Santa Ana winds well. I lived in Brea for a long time, and currently live in Huntington Beach now. Plan on moving back up to the Fullerton area in the future. I'm just saying that I don't see Chivas USA rebranding to the Santa Ana Winds, no matter how bad the Chivas USA brand is.
