I don't see how you can be so certain Wolfsburg will sell or release Diego.

Nothing you mentioned is sound football business on VfL's part. Not one thing.

Wolfsburg cannot just release Diego without being stuck with the rest of Diego's salary.

No one will be hurt except Wolfsburg if they just pay Diego his huge salary to waste his time with the amateurs.

They will also be hindering the progress of a young midfielder if they do that. Not only that, having a Bundesliga malcontent with these young players every day could very well hinder more than just one midfielder's progress.

It is funny that next season, Magath will once again run into a player he banished to the amateurs while coaching that player.

Wolfsburg fans who have been Wolfsburg fans for more than two seasons will remember Simon Jentzsch.

This guy had the potential to be a Germany international one day and Felix banished this guy to Wolfsburg's amateur team.

Jentzsch was no Diego. Jentzsch stayed quiet, got paid to waste his time with the amateurs and secured a free transfer for FC Augsburg.

For whom Jentzsch will be #1 for in the 1st Bundesliga next season.

If Wolfsburg wants to get rid of Diego, they will have to do so on Diego's terms. He has all the advantages here.

I believe the best things that can happen for Wolfsburg in this situation are:

    1) A Club Diego Wants To Join Comes In With An Offer VfL Finds Fair: The good thing here is that Diego "only" cost VfL 15M Euros. If one of the big Spanish or Italian clubs has interest in Diego, 15M Euros is nothing to them. Both Milan clubs have been long known as refuges for players who have failed at Juventus.

    2) Magath and Diego patch up their differences: Believe it or not, this could very well happen. Believe it or not, two men with massive egos can co-exist if they have the same goal and each decides the other guy is his best shot at reaching that goal.

When properly motivated, there isn't a better offensive player in the Bundesliga than Diego. I'm certain Felix Magath knows this.

But I also know Magath won't sacrifice team harmony to satisfy Diego.

Diego is capable of functioning in a team environment. He showed this in Bremen.

    This leaves two questions:

    1) Can Felix Magath reach Diego on the same level Thomas Schaaf did for two seasons?

    2) Will Felix Magath even try reaching Diego?

I can tell just by reading the latest posts that the 2011-12 season will be a very interesting one. Hopefully, Diego and Felix Magath with join heads together rather than butt heads and I think the chemistry will be absolutely unstoppable once the two of them dial it all in. Set pieces are a specialty of Diego, we've seen what he can do on them when Edin Dzeko was with us during the first half, imagine him when he's got either Grafite, Patrick Helmes or even Mario Mandzukic on the receiving end of a Diego corner, tic-tac-toe (Diego-Grafite/Mandzukic/Helmes-back of the net). it's simple physics. It doesn't take Cindy Margolis' brains to figure that out.

Felix Magath has either won (Wolfsburg 2008-09) or brought teams on the edge of winning (or at least get his teams into either to Champions League like he did with Schalke last year or at least to the Europa League), so I am sure as hell glad we have him back, Thank you FC Schalke for firing him, your loss just became our long-awaited (re) gain! :)

Felix Magath will bring the title back to the Lower Saxony soon, maybe not next season, but he just has to get the chemistry just rght, and Diego will be an intregal part of it. True he is no Misimovic (I've heard a lot of comments stating that he was one of our best players before I jumped on board the VfL Wolfsburg bandwagon in 2010), but give him a shot to prove himself, I am sure Felix will be more than glad to oblige as long as Diego cooperates. I hate to see him go "one-and-done".

I'd certainly prefer that over Wolfsburg. Of course, "Lower Saxony" doesn't give a shit if Wolfsburg wins (except for Wolfsburg fans... maybe)...

Half of Lower Saxony doesn't even care about us (but about HB or HH)

Depends on who you mean by "us" - as for Hannover only the number would probably even bigger (and I don't mean this as a jab or anything).

I mean 96. Obviously people in brunswick care, in the same way people in Dortmund 'care' about Schalke (as opposed to Hannoverians and Brunwickians not caring about VFL Wolfsburg). But I am pretty sure that, in absolute numbers, the majority of Lower Saxony does not care about 96. The majority of Lower Saxon football fans possibly, but only because the southeast of Lower Saxony is much more populated.

Goodbye Graffa 23 - Grafite Leaves Wolfsburg for Dubai (we'll miss him)

    http://www.vfl-wolfsburg.de/50543+M52e5c8c873f.html

..and I just already ordered a VfL 3rd jersey from last season, and I will indeed also be ordering a 2011-2012 green home jersey soon, boy it's a good thing I opted to have both of them blank in the back, I didn't know the deal was done until this afternoon.

Indeed Grafite will be missed by all Bundesliga fans (and especially Wolfsburg supporters like myself) who enjoyed watching him tear defenses apart, especially that 2009 Goal Of The Year that he scored against Bayern Munich which led us to the title (under Felix Magath), so in case you missed it or want to relive past days of glory (those will come back under Magath soon) for the Green-Whites, I put up this masterpiece of a goal for all of us to remember ol' Graffa 23 by:

A VfL supporter since 2010 surely can't have THAT many fond memories of Grafite / that goal / the "glory days" of Wolfsburg.

Re: Goodbye Graffa 23 - Grafite Leaves Wolfsburg for Dubai (we'll miss him)

Whether I buy a new iPod, or even in this case, pick out a particular team to support, I always do more than my fair share of research before doing so, and since I picked the VfL, I wanted to find out more about their history, and while they may not be Bayern Munich, they do have their fair share of fans, and with VW backing them up (VW has a much different image here in America than it does over in Germany, myself owning a couple of them), it made sense, at least for me, that and also the fact that they were coming off winning the title in 2009, Grafite's "highlight reel" goal being one of the reasons they won. Otherwise I would've been like every other American bandwagon jumper, and perhaps the Bundesliga would've been passed over in favor of Manchester United like everybody here (we're all iPod-using/latest-and-greatest/bandwagon-jumping sheep here) would do.

Of course picking up that 1998-99 VfL Jersey was only meant at first to be nothing more than a driving jersey for my 1999 New Beetle GLS. but ohhh it became so much more than that later on. :)

    GO WOLVES!!!

There is a perfectly good Wolfsburg thread in this forum - we get that you ae very enthusiastic about your newfound club, but this isn't the board for player threads.

Re: Goodbye Graffa 23 - Grafite Leaves Wolfsburg for Dubai (we'll miss him)

Yes, I know. But this news goes far beyond even the Wolfsburg thread because he is leaving the entire Bundesliga for another international league, the magnitude of it therefore made my decision easier for me to put it up as a separate thread rather than that of mere club business, in which case yes, it would only have gone up in the VfL thread.

All of us in some way enjoyed watching Grafite bust his ass off for a full 90 in the BL, and all of us, no matter what club we support, wish him nothing but all the best (and more highlight-reel goals like the one I posted :) ) in his new adventures over in Dubai.

We'll all miss Graffa 23 in some way or form.

No offense and all, but you seem to have a slightly inflated view on the importance of Wolfsburg and it's players for non-Wolfsburg fans.

Let's just say that Grafite does not go to Dubai because he's the second coming of Pele in his prime.

    Second coming of Pele?

Dude I don't go THAT far when it comes to describing Grafite, hey, there will only be one Pele, and he was the greatest footballer that ever walked on the face of this planet (I know I'm gonna hear about it from English football fans about the likes of the late great George Best and also David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, yes I know), I saw Pele play for those great New York Cosmos clubs in the later stages of his record-setting career back in the 1970's, he was indeed the face of the entire NASL (North American Soccer League), he carried that league for the time he was with them (1975-77), but who knows how great Grafite could be, or what he'll be perceived as in Dubai, only time will tell that.

Kind of sad to see another one of the players I liked following in the Bundesliga leave for money. Grafite just wants to go out on a big paycheck

He definitely played a big part in the team's 2009 title winning season

    Indeed he did.

But it must have taken a whole bunch of dough ($$$, ching-ching-bling-bling) to convince Grafite to leave not only Wolfsburg, but the entire Bundesliga as well.

Now onto to other football-related business and our off-season moves:

I understand we signed a bunch of new talent for next season, anybody know about how good these new guys can be in the short future?

So you have fond memories of doing research?

Also, did you make a Dzeko appreciation thread too? He did more for WOB than Grafite.

Anyway, yes, this topic belongs in the VfL thread. Grafite isn't exactly going down as a Bundesliga great because of one spectacular season.

    No. It wouldn't have.

Grafite didn't have a prayer of playing at Wolfsburg anymore and get this....

NO ONE ELSE IN THE BUNDESLIGA WANTED HIM!!

What part of "one season wonder" do you not wish to understand?

Grafite is done. He had one great season.

He went for the desert payday. He went to get paid while some dummy still wanted to pay for his "name."

    Who can blame him??

Probably outside of Wolfsburg, but people will remember him at nearly every "historic BL season highlight show":

What a nice spanking and this goal was really the cherry on the cake. :D

That is definitely what I'll remember him for.

And for one season, being the most dangerous player in the Bundesliga.

The "most dangerous player for one season" is the same reason I'll always remember Marek Mintal too....... ;)

Grafite was never going to replicate that season, was always going to be downhill from there. He has nothing left to contribute, not to Wolfsburg's high aspirations anyways. Better to move him on rather than hold the team back.

FR, no one expected him to replicate that season.

However, he's been f#cking CRAP for most of the last two seasons.

    That's the point being made.
