Walked into Catas for the first time on Friday, a dozen guys were fall down drunk, floor was so sticky from spilled beer I could barely walk, and it was impossible to get to the bar to order a beer. I'll be sticking with El Pastor...

I had issues with the trolly last year, but I've used it twice this year, and it's worked out beautifully.

Try parking in the Ironbound at Iberia Peninsula.. you get a $10 voucher for food so technically the parking is free and I believe that the trolley rolls right past there and only stops one more spot before heading to the arena... I think eventually the train station will be a blessing, and RB should have trolley's waiting.... I wish there was some designated area for the elderly and handicapped to simply park and have cars waiting to get them into the grounds.... good luck.

I had to post in that the handling of traffic and parking in the parking deck near the PATH has been improved a lot since last year. Getting off of 280, there's plenty of cops directing traffic and keeping it moving right to the deck. After the game, there's more people directing people out. I left right after the game wit hthe peak of the crowd, and had no problem getting to 280 and out of town. Just as fast as i did when i parked at Iberia.

You won't have the fun of going to Ironbound bars, but if you just want to drive in and out after, then it's gotten much better.

I am sorry but I have to disagree. Though my experiences at the stadium have been great and so on, the parking situation overall has been nothing short of a nightmare.

Some friends of mine, my gf, plus my brother and I went to the game vs. the Crew last week and we left our car in one of those big lots that's very close to the stadium (almost a block away). The price ($10) was very reasonable but the main problem is getting out: not only are only two gates the only access in and out but the people directing the traffic are incredibly rude (by this I mean the parking lot attendants).

It was substantially worse yesterday mainly due to the fact that there were a lot of Guatemalans and Hondurans present. That being said, some common sense needs to apply and more, bigger gates need to be built or made, I suppose. Then again, this lot is probably not directly affiliated with the NYRB organization but it is still "parking" and as such I think it can be discussed here.

We'll probably be looking to park elsewhere next time we go.

    My 2 Chilean pesos.

Yeah I have to agree with you to be honest... the real problem is the roads leading to and from the stadium are not set up to handle 20,000 + people coming and going. I believe there are some steps in place to address this, but its down the road and the economy situation isn't helping. Last night was an epic event to be honest and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, but I decided to park in one of the lots closer to the grounds then where I normally park for RB games... All the food was fantastic around the grounds so I basically put down my tailgate, ate some beef on a stick, had some corn, and drank a few cold beers with some new friends from Honduras. Great atmosphere around the grounds and even saw a little fight between some Hondurans and Guatemalans.

Is that a good thing? :p

Touching back on this--and I hope not to be derailing the thread with this one little story--one Jamaican guy sitting behind us in the stadium was smoking a spliff. Actually, that "second-hand" smoke really gave us the munchies: my brother, our friend and I. :p

Besides the parking situation, the other issue that worries me, is the fact that I need to get back on route 280 west after the game, and all the streets leading to it, were closed by the police, even an hour after the game. I think this needs to be adressed but I don't know if the NYRB can do something about it. Like somebody said on a previous post, the are surrounding the stadium, is not prepared to handle such a big crowd.

After games, I walk into Harrison and I can say with certainty that all the streets leading to 280 West are not closed. There are 2 entrances to 280 West - 1 when you make the left at Wendy's on Bergen St and another on Cleveland Ave at 2nd St.
Unless there is a major accident that shuts down 280, those streets and entrance ramps are not closed (full of traffic - yes)

Wasn't part of the traffic plan upgrading/extending Cape May to use the 280w ramp further east ? Am I wrong ?

Has anyone heard anything about that ?

At the very end of Cape May St is the Path train yard, not sure how keen Port Authority would feel about allowing the road to extend through that.
Also, the roads would need to be built to go over the train tracks, past/over/around 2 other business that own land between the tracks and 280 and, in order to meet up with current ramps, extend even further east.

I've heard stories about the Mayor of Harrison campaigning 5 years ago on the lack of traffic that will occur and ramps being built to 280 before arena construction was to be finished. Obviously that was a lie. When the Harrison Mayor is currently asked about those ramps, he now says it's in the hands of the state and he wants no part of it.

We're talking about the same "passion" that led some fans (namely Hondurans) to throw bottles on the field when the PK was called in favor of Jamaica.

Yes, passion is lacking in this country but we can certainly do without following the wrong examples; e.g: fights, bottle-throwing, etc.

I agree. I was drenched with beer and after Jamaica scored a couple of guys a few rows behind me started making gestures and monkey sounds.

I don't know... I kind of enjoy the EU on match days.. you never know what to expect!!!!

I've been to the UK many, many times and have to say nothing better... to each his own, but thats passion... not for everyone I agree, but if consenting adults want to have it out against other consenting adults then so be it!!

Racism however should not be tolerated anywhere... I jumped all over 2 Honduras fans who started up with the monkey gestures and chants... They backed down immediately and it is uncalled for!!!!!

The Latin-American "example" of passion I think we can do without. European soccer fans tend to be a little more "tame" (for lack of a better term), while at the same time displaying passion without the need to get violent/belligerent. Examples of this are found at the Westfalenstadion, Anfield Road to name but two.

I hope I am not derailing the thread and my apologies if I am.

Agreed. Plus, if we want to be "technical" there is a substantial porcentage of the Honduran population that is black. Then again, racism and racists in general are so ignorant by definition that I am sure this material fact would be irrelevant to them.

what difference does that make? if they were drunk before they got there, they shouldn't be let in. if they were getting drunk at the bar, they should have been cut off. these places in the ironbound are way too lax about security. i'm sick and tired of people that pretend being a pure soccer fan has to involve getting themselves out of control. how much soccer does a drunk enjoy?

For those of you who want to drive but not deal with driving in Newark this place is offering discount parking coupon. Park in Secaucus and take the train to RBA. It's a ten minute trip to Newark Penn Station.

Well, to be honest, I think the drunk fans enjoyed the soccer in May more than I did.

iced1776 didn't say these guys where fans. (he'll have to clarify that one). keep in mind that the Portugal Day Festival was going on. It could explain the drunks and definitly contributed to the added traffic that night.
