O Lordy: Tarantino Takes on Slavery By Debra J. Dickerson It’s hard to know what to make of Quentin Tarantino’s newly announced movie, Django Unchained, but, for now, I’ll go with grudging gratitude. And pessimism. In the movie, “Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (Christopher Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner. And that doesn’t even half begin to cover it! This film deals with racism as I’ve rarely seen it handled in a Hollywood film. While it’s 100 percent pure popcorn and revenge flick, it is pure genius in the way it takes on the evil slave owning south. Think of what he did with the Nazis in Inglorious and you’ll get a sense of what he’s doing with slave owners and slave overseers in this one.” http://www.doublex.com/blog/xxfactor
Sounds very, very derivative of Inglourious. The lack of machine guns in the antebellum South is gonna make the ending different.
You know this is going to suck and suck verily I say. If I saw him on the street I'd like to give him a swift kick in the nuts. Perhaps it would knock some sense into him. This is entirely a remake of Inglorious Bas-turds.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but you're on the record as not really digging Tarantino's style and MO, so of course you think it's going to suck. To Tarantino, the story is merely the vessel for his characters and dialog, who cares if the setup is derivative of Basterds? He's just following the revenge fantasy format. I mean, you're going to knock Michael Mann for doing his 47th "men who are very serious about their work" flick? Also, this is clearly an extension of Django Sukiyaki Western. Question: Does this mean I should give up on the Vega Brothers prequel? And how is he going to do the car trunk POV shot he does in every movie?
Back of a wagon? I'm excited for this movie, because the time period in question is very interesting. I don't mind at all that Tarantino is doing another revisionist history revenge fantasy type film. I REALLY hope that Will Smith isn't cast in the lead. He's far too Will Smith. The latest rumor is Idris Elba-- he would be much better. Although the PERFECT choice would be Michael K. Williams.
I'd pay to watch Michael K. Williams do just about anything, including reading 'Goodnight Moon' to a group of small children.
I can't wait for this. The minute I heard that great old Spaghetti Western name Django in the title I was excited. Let 'er rip, Quint!
For what it's worth, the new project is less of a "Western" and more of a "Southern," according to Tarantino (or someone close to him-- can't remember exactly where the quote came from).
No matter how palpably ironic and deeply hilarious I may find a thread about a movie on slavery turning into a shouting match over claims of xenophobia, my sworn Mod Blood Oath requires I bring such festivities to a close. Now, if someone could point me in the general direction of a congregation of Caucasian females, I'd be greatly appreciative. (Just to be clear: Thread remains open; Tomfoolery removed.)
Couldn't find a picture of Troy dressed as Bart, but this will have to do. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkv6fRwrvZA"]YouTube - Leonard Community: where the white women at?‏[/ame]
The non politically correct term used was: Jim, AKA the Waco Kid: Oh boys. Sheriff Bart: Where the white women at? A brilliant and hilarious film that sadly could not be made today. Damn shame that such a gifted actor like Cleavon Little made so few good films after Blazing Saddles. He died way too young too.
I think it could be made today, but it just wouldn't get the backing of a large studio. Plenty of films still really push the edges of the envelope, political correctness wise. I mean, have you seen Four Lions?
It would be re-made, would star the young schmucks from The Hangover and Knocked Up and would be complete shit
True, I had the same initial reaction. But having said that, I am certain that Tarantino will pay hommage to that character as well throughout the movie in some ways though, especially since he has referenced the good ole' spaghetti western flicks so often in his other movies. Let's hope at least for a coffin full of machine guns... Anyway... the cast and plot details revealed on http://www.djangounchained.org/ are getting me super exited already!
This isn't precisely related to Django Unchained, but it's another project with a similar premise-- though this will be directed by Steve McQueen and star Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor (who was once rumored for the Django role, I think?) http://www.slashfilm.com/michael-fassbender-joins-chiwetel-ejiofor-steve-mcqueens-12-years-slave/
I don't think it could be made today, just like the Cheech and Chong movies. Relics of a better time in the arts.
I read the script and ohhh boy this film is going to piss a lot of people off. I don't know if that was the final draft but it has some stuff that's pretty out there. It says the "n word" probably a million times and Tarantino has gotten slack for using it too much in movies. Those other movies are babies compared to Django. I also read that Jaime Foxx will play Django. I can't imagine him doing some of the stuff that's on there. But the Waltz casting is brilliant for that part.
