Hockey is a cruel game sometimes, and tonight was very difficult to accept for me and all Sharks fans.

Congrats to Vancouver, I hope and expect them to lift the Cup.

Rumors are that Jagr will sign with SKA St Petersburgh for a year or two and then permanently return to the Czech Republic.

Also that stud prospect and world junior hero Vladimir Tarasenko will stay in Siberia next season and not join the Blues.

Jagr seems pretty comfortable in Russia and put up about a point per game in 3 seasons at Omsk--any idea how much he might make in the KHL?

On livescore.com, the main site I frequent for quick soccer, hockey and tennis scores, they accidentally posted that SJ and Vancouver were playing tonight in Game 6. Probably someone's idea of a cruel joke, and a good one at that.

Lol chacal trying to figure out KHL salaries is like reading tea leaves. I'd guess his old deal was around 5-7 million per season.

Evegni Kuznetsov, who along with Tarasenko are the blue chip prospects for Russia right now, just resigned with Traktor Chelyabinsk for one more season. Interesting to note the one year deal, perhaps we see him in Washington with Ovechkin in 2012. He also apparently is going to get married, in Traktor's arena.

This kid might be the best prospect since Sidney Crosby

    Run down.

Nikita Filatov was traded to the Ottawa Senators for a 3rd round pick. Essentially Columbus gave up on Filatov, a top ten draft selection and one of the hall of famers in the Why the Columbus Blue Jackets are terrible draft kit. Ottawa essentially gets one of the most talented hockey players around, who just never put it together for a 3rd round draft pick. Not quite nothing, but a 3rd rounder isn't typically very valuable. If Filatov continues to suck, oh well, Ottawa loses a not quite worthless pick. If Filatov realizes his potential, gets motivated and turns on the jets, steal of the year for Ottawa. Anywhere in between that and Filatov becoming a decent contributor and Ottawa wins.

Semyon Varlamov has left the Washington Capitals to go back to the KHL. Varlamov claimed that the Capitals doctors mismanaged him and created his injury prone label by telling him he was fine and could play, when Varlamov thought he was hurt, leading to reinjury. Varlamov also claimed that Washington intentionally benched him in favor of Michael Neuvirth when he was healthy in order to drive down his asking price at the negotiating table this summer. The funny thing is that Varlamov wants to play for SKA, and SKA want him, but technically Lokomotiv still owns his rights and have refused to sell. Based on Varlamov's throwing Washington management and staff under the bus, I don't see him returning anytime soon. It will be interesting how a major defection effects the current Russian bug (nicknamed Filatov Flu) going around the NHL, as it hits perhaps the team that invested the most in Russian players.

Vladislav Namestnikov was the highest drafted Russian in this year's 2011 draft. He went 27th to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Namestnikov isn't considered a super star talent, but he likely would have gone in the top 15 if not for his passport. He played last year with the London Knights and scored 68 points in 68 games.

Alexander Khokhlachev went in the 2nd round to the Bruins. He is a typical Russian player, with good skill, but he is fairly small at 5'10'' 172. A long way from the NHL and the Bruins likely don't care about that. They can wait.

The Tampa Bay Lightning used their 2nd round pick on Nikita Kucherov, who like Khokhlachev is a small skilled forward. They also took Nikita Nesterov in the 5th round of the draft. The GM of the Lightning in case you are wondering? Steve Yzerman. I wonder if all those years in Detroit gave him a soft spot for Russian players.

9 Russian players were drafted in total, which made for the 6th highest nationality behind Canada, the US, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Finland in that order.

Nail Yakupov is officially on the clock as the top prospect for 2012. It's a long way to go, at this time Sean Couturier and Adam Larsson were consensus 1 and 2 picks (they went 8 and 4 respectively), but Yakupov is considered one of the best prospects since Sidney Crosby. He is tiny, listed at 5'10'' 170, (roughly the same size as Patrick Kane) but his talent is undeniable. He scored 101 points last year as a two year underager in 65 games with a pretty bad Sarnia Sting team in the OHL. For comparison, in their two year underage year here are some stats.

Crosby 135-59 (the Q is much more offensive league but that is still absurd)
    T. Hall 90-63
    Nugent-Hopkins 65-67
Patrick Kane was with the USNDT and did not play more than one year in Junior hockey
    E. Staal- 62-56
    Rick Nash - 66-58
    J. Staal- 28-66
    Stamkos- 92-63 (Sarnia alum)
Tavares 118-59 (Tavares has one of the more odd junior careers statistically of any player I've ever seen, his line literally goes like this

14 years old 28-20 (most kids don't play in Juniors at 14)
    15 years old 134-67
    16 years old 118-59
    17 years old 104-56

As you can see his scoring rate actually went down in his draft year, which might have had something to do with being traded mid year.

    Yakupov 101- 65

As you can see, of the past top overall picks (E. Staal was #2 behind Fleury, and J. Staal was #2 behind Erik Johnson, but I just use them for comparison sakes as the highest drafted forwards), only two (Tavares and Crosby) have outpaced Yakupov at this point.

The jury is still out on Tavares, and by that I mean, he hasn't really been given a decent chance to really show his final ceiling. Stamkos had Lecavalier, St. Louis and others while Tavares had Kyle Okposo and Dough Weight. Crosby is a superstar and Yakupov is ahead of Stamkos, Eric Staal, Rick Nash, Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at this point.

And what do you think about some of the deals so far, like the Flyers getting rid of Carter and Richards for example?

Also, Brent Burns for Setoguchi and some change...are you a fan of Burns' game?

    My take

    Flyers won big time.

They get a future scoring star in Brayden Schenn, a decent forward in Voracek and a future stud (maybe Jordan Staal-Ryan Kesler type) in Sean Couturier for a good but not great Mike Richards who was apparently causing locker room havoc, and an enigmatic forward who could score, but was often hurt and often disappeared in important games. The Flyers will comeback with a strong net presence, still three lines deep at forward, with young stars under cheap contracts. They are a cup favorite right now.

The Sharks-Wild deal was a win win. On the face of it, Minnesota destroyed San Jose, because they are getting an excellent prospect in Coyle and four first round picks. But it's a win for San Jose because they know that they only have a year, maybe two more to realistically be at their peak and challenge for the cup. Burns will help them do that, if he stays healthy. After that though, you better be ready for an Avalanche like breakdown and collapse.

The Avalanche traded a first and second round pick to Washington for Varlamov. And this is the point where I officially give up on the avalanche's once promising rebuilding efforts.

The Florida Panthers got themselves Brian Campbell. And now you see them singing hymns and preaching love to this "Big Signing". Interestingly, when all local hockey "experts" were asked to provide their lists of defensemen free agents no one put Campbell in their top 10.

Campbell wasn't a free agent. He was traded from Chicago to Florida in a salary dump. For Chicago, Campbell was a liability, with five more years of a $7.1 million dollar cap hit. For Florida his salary is both helpful, because it puts them closer to the minimum salary level which they are below, and he is helpful because he is a good player. Probably not 7.1 million dollars good, but he's automatically the best Panther d-man on the team right now.
