Who's this Dave Wilson? There's no way that Bone gets a 4.0 and Paladini gets a 4.5. Yes they did get off to a slow start, but they picked it up late in the first half and and second half. Pause does a hell of lot less then they both did and he get 5.5 and 6.0, give me a ********IN break.
Dave Wilson here. I agree that I may have been a little harsh on Bone and Paladini, but I prefer to make some sort of distinction in my impressions of overall performance and not just rate 5 or 6 across the board. I stand by my low rating for Bone. He was absolutely invisible. Paladini I debated a higher rating due to his second half performance, but he was brought in to increase possession and for set pieces. The Fire got dominated possession-wise in the midfield and his set pieces were non-factors. I think defensively Pause is a step above and Paladini's rating was lower due to my impression of his role in the Rapid's goal. I welcome your criticism and encourage you to comment on the site with your suggestions for how you would have rated them and why. After all, player ratings are completely subjective and I am by no means an expert. Many readers would likely agree with you and appreciate your comments. Thanks for reading!
In addition, comparing my player rating for Pause against different opponents in a different formation, to my rating for Bone and Paladini against the Rapids when Pause didn't even play... is comparing apples and oranges.
If you re-watch the game and focus on Bone, you will see that he played very well as a CAM...you will also notice that his teammates didn't utilize him much, (because they probably didn't recognize him outside of practice). If you still have some doubts and you don't have the time, click on the game highlights above and watch the first 2-3 minutes of highlights and just focus on Bone...to say he was "absolutely invisible" is at best a false accusation. Paladini was very good, and much more positive in his play than Pause.
So, in essence, you are saying that all ratings of players should be done in a vacuum, that is, each and every player must be rated individually within the context of that particular game and that no comparisons should or even can be drawn from the comparisons. To do otherwise would be, according to you, comparing apples and oranges. Congratulations, you have made the entire idea of rating players, tracking trends and drawing inferences therefrom, completely irrelevant. Finally, if Corben Bone was, as you assert, "completely invisible," how did you manage to rate him at all? Should his rating be "0" or "incomplete" or "Was it my imagination or was that Kevin Bacon out there?"
I re-watched the highlights and did indeed notice Bone making some good runs and opening up lanes. He has quick feet. It's unfortunate that he wasn't utilized. Would you suggest giving him a higher rating simply based on his "potential" and not his actual impact or contribution to the game? Are there other areas of more significant contribution I may have missed? Not being recognized by teammates and having little time on the ball is why I used the word invisible. I agree Paladini was much more positive in his play, but it didn't lead to a stronger or more possessive attack and it seemed to open up holes in front of the central defense. Just because Pause is a defensive (or negative) player doesn't mean his is a lesser role or that his performance is worse. His style is the reason he's so underrated in the league.
I think my figurative use of "invisible" may have been taken a little too literally. Also, a rating of zero should be reserved for, in my opinion, someone who actually contributes quite negatively to a loss by scoring multiple own goals and capping it off with a sending off. As far as player rating comparisons, my point was merely that I can't speculate that Pause would have performed any better than Paladini in the Rapids game based on previous ratings. I also can't speculate that Paladini would have performed at the same level in previous games. It's tough to predict too much from player ratings when the formations, lineups, and opponents are constantly changing. They can be useful, however, retrospectively observing an individual's subjective performance over time, how a player plays with certain teammates, in a certain role... and I certainly agree that they could be used to compare players to each other. That is of course why we even go through the process. Your original frustration with my ratings, I gather, was that you thought Bone and Paladini deserved an equal or higher rating than Pause's previous performances. You are probably right and I would love if you would be willing to provide me with more concrete examples of gameplay that you found deserving. How would you have rated them?
RatethePlayers.com has a collaborative player ratings system by the fans. It seems like most Fire fans agree that Bone and Paladini were the weakest of the starting 11 in this match.
You forgot the word "much"...it's a word that means "a lot", or a "whole bunch"...I put the word "much" next to the word "utilized" to show that Pappa was being a ball hog...Bone's play was practically flawless...I used the word "practically" right there to show he did not score a goal. He was not "invisible", but I do get the idea that you seem to think your reputation might depend on that being true. Pause's style of play is not the reason he is underrated in our league, it's the reason he is overrated in our league...and a big reason why we are a team that considers a 0-0 road point a great accomplishment.
A lot of people liked 3's company...a lot of people agreed that it was a great tv show...that doesn't mean it was a great tv show.
3' ball fell to him on the wing, failed to control and conceded a throw. 4' back pass 4' tackled ball to a rapids player 10' found oduro 10 yards forward in defensive half 11' beat 1 on1 near midfield 13' 5 yard square 17' 5 yards forward in attacking half. Found Puerari who couldnt do anything in traffic.
23' tried to play through ball, pass intercepted. 30' pass intercepted after intercepting a rapids pass 30' pass intercepted 34' backpass 35' suffered a foul near Col box, advantage given as ball rolls to a fire player 36' ball falls to him near Fire box, couldn't control and loses it back 39' 5 yard square to Pappa who switched field to oduro, led to a good chance 42' Fire goal, zero involvement by Bone Halftime
45' pass intercepted 46' back pass to guy in traffic 48' pass intercepted 48' Rapids goal. Bone one of three Fire players beat by through ball. 59' good defensive header on a corner, though he wasn't in any traffic on the far post 60' back pass 61' beat 1 on 1 62' back pass to Cuesta who had just passed to him 63' lost possession 63' back pass 64' 2 short passes in defensive half 69' nice ball played over the top to Pappa, moderately dangerous chance 69' shot wide from 20 yards on ensuing corner 70' nice ball forward to Puerari who gets off a shot 72' subbed off Summary: for most of the game, Bone was a disaster. He played well in his last 10 minutes but until that point I was planning to advocate cutting him.
...in two games, in two years...I agree. Hey iron81, I love how a lot of the 'intercepted' passes listed are after Bone's pass was completed...you couldn't have made Bone's performance seem worse if you tried...well done. It reminds me of when Baky was here and after one game almost everyone said he couldn't complete a pass to save his life...so I re-watched the game in question to find that his passing % was near 100%, with only one pass that went out on the sideline, and even that was the right play...so there must be other factors involved.
I like Bone and I'm glad he's playing and I hope he gets consistent minutes between regular and reserve games. My point was that people take one game and blow it out of proportion to fit whatever view they have, especiay of dlC. If Bone had had a hat trick these forums would be overflowing with people saying dlC should be fired for not playing him sooner. Instead Bone perhaps had a lackluster game but those same people wouldn't argue that not playing Bone as much as we would have liked might have been the right decision.
Any game with Logan Pause: 4' back pass 6' square pass to Pappa 8' back pass to Segares 18' back pass to Gibbs 25' loses possession 35' back pass to Conway/Johnson 41' loses possession 45' interview with tv about how the Fire are really pressing Half time-shower 52' 40 yard back pass to Conway/Johnson 56' good tackle to break up opponents' possession 61' loses the player he is marking in the box, either a goal or a save by Conway/Johnson 65' back pass to Gibbs 75' square ball to whoever happens be standing 15 yards away 83' back pass to someone in order to "control the clock" with the Fire tied. 90+ interview with tv about how a draw on the road is a good result Later that evening: He gets a 6 rating BS posters alternately: vilify him or state that he is not a problem.
No, they weren't. Bone's passing the majority of the game sucked terribly. The reason I made his performance seem bad is because it was bad.
I understand what you are saying...but it's the second match we've played this year with a CAM...and neither of those two games ended with a CAM... People want to hold someone responsible for our lackluster play...and sometimes they attack the wrong guy...and that's what happened here.
Yeah, I'm in no way attacking Corbin. I still have high hopes for him, but I also have high hopes for the team. ******** Vancouver with a boiling hot lobster.
Right on! I am sick of those trash-talking moose jockeys too...with their clean air and trees and national health care...****! I can't think of anything bad to say aboot canada....
Uh-huh. Oh, what a lumpy sweater you've knitted. No need to explain... we're Fire fans... and that's what we do.
