Well, the Harper government fell on a non-confidence motion that accuses the government of engaging in corruption. One who supports the Liberals would have to hope that these charges can stick since they've been down in the polls (how bad depends on who you ask). EKOS Poll Ipsos Poll Funny that I'll be away for 10 days in Cuba at the end of April, so I'll miss some of the on goings in the election.

Well, the first week went by and I only now can bump this thread. Policy announcements were rather weak this week as the Tories brought back some of the items in budget, such as tax relief once the books are balanced. The Liberals went the education route by offering a new fund for those needing "PSE" and reviving their long promise of national child care plan. The biggest announcement is the Tory pledge to help develop the Lower Churchill project in Newfoundland. There have been some gaffes on both sides of the coin, but it seems that this week was the shakedown period as the Liberals will announce their full platform on Sunday. Meanwhile, here is a link to a rolling poll that is being conducted by CTV during the course of the election. http://www.ctv.ca/mini/election2011/polltracker/index.html
WHOA! That's insane to think about. The Liberals are following the lead of their British counterparts, just slowly shooting themselves in the foot.
Doyle, what are Layton's health issues? It was reported as a factor in his light schedule in Wk 1. I'm embarassed about not knowing,as i have CBC and CTV on my cable.
It's important to note that that's a poll on the leaders alone, and reflects the fact that Ignatieff has the charisma of wax paper. The Grits still lead the NDP as a party, and policies are the #1 factor in determining most people's vote.

Re: 2011 Canadian Election Well they can run it against the game in PQ. Dont' put it up against L'Antichambre (post-game show) though.
2011 Canadian Election What do you think the ratings would be, between the debates & the Habs-Bruins opener, especially in PQ? The technicians in the truck would probably be viewing the live feed of the game! BTW, there was an impressive turnout of Quebec fans wearing Nordiques jerseys in Newark yesterday to attend the Devils-Bruins game!
Re: 2011 Canadian Election Nordiques fans want their team back. All they need is a rink. I was referring that a debate en francais is a bit pointless-separatists will vote Bloc, and federalists will vote for whoever will send Quebec funds to 'support national Unity".
2011 Canadian Election Perhaps the Conservatives should offer them one! I didn't realize it's a road show: http://www.montrealgazette.com/spor...es+blue+York/3965964/story.html#ixzz1813ch3t5 http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/26/nordiques-nation-is-headed-to-newark/

I go away for 10 days and come back to find the situations has pivoted on its head...... Discuss some more on Wednesday.
Crap I might have to watch CBC on Monday. Or will there be a game on? Will anyone in BC remember to vote?
In your opinion,Doyle,is the NDP resurgence ,due to Layton's charisma advantage over Iggy,or is this the (long hoped for by NDPers) final collapse of the centrist Liberals, creating an actual left and right in Canadian politics?
I just hope that either the Conservatives, the Liberals, or the NDP (or any two-fer combination of the three) gets enough seats to get the BQ out of the majority. Goddamn frogs.
So you're either a) taking the piss,or b)displaying your profound ignorance of Canada. Haven't finished,my coffee yet so I'm not sure which this is. Anyhoo, the Bloc only runs in Quebec and are not part of any majority. They are being stronly challenged by the NDP as well as Tories in Quebec. This is a surprise considering the many years of Liberal voting in Quebec federal elections.
The best explanation I can do for you is this: America was built on compromise. You've got 50 states, 50 different cultures (some more radical than others), 50 states who send representatives to Washington to make deals that benefit their own state. Sometimes it's not possible to get what's best for the people who live in their state, so these reps (I mean both congressman and senators) have to compromise in order to have a deal that might not always satisfy everyone, but at least addresses as many needs as possible. I think I've got that correct. There's no direct equivalent in Canada because for the most part, we think of Canada as one state more often than we think of Canada as 13 separate entities. I say this even though as a Torontonian I probably have more in common with someone from Buffalo than someone in Calgary. This probably has to do with the formative events leading up to Canada's creation as opposed to America but I digress. Now let's imagine that 80% of all Spanish mothertongue Americans (don't want to say Latinos because that's too broad) in America lived in Texas. Because there are more Spanish mothertongue Americans in Texas, shouldn't that mean that they deserve special attention as opposed to other parts of America because they've got a more of them than anywhere else in America? This is includes subsidies to publishers to publish Spanish language textbooks, more control over immigration, greater autonomy over tax dollars collected? That's pretty much is what is going on here. What the Bloc has succeeded in doing is convince Quebecers that they are different from the rest of Canada and because they are different, they deserve a party that is from Quebec that understands their needs and understands their culture. It doesn't help that throughout history, there have been attempts to try to assimilate them, times where we probably should've listened to them more, times that politicians have had to walk a tight rope between making decisions that would either please English Canada (and piss off French Canadians) or vice versa. The Bloc has also succeeded in manipulating the media by reminding Qubecers of all the times they've been screwed by Ottawa that they have succeeded in branding themselves as "Quebec's Party." When a deal gets done that for example, offers Quebec and all the other provinces more autonomy over Employment Insurance, media in the rest of Canada will say something like "a compromise was reached that satisfied both the federal government and all over provinces." In Quebece the story is, "your local Bloc politician went to Ottawa on your behalf and brought home the bacon." Thing is, people in Quebec believe it. For 200 years they've gotten "screwed" by Ottawa and now that they're "winning," its pretty much assumed that they deserve it. If they don't get their way, they'll run to the voters and say "hey look, the rest of Canada doesn't think we're special. They don't respect Quebec! Let's get a divorce from them and separate!" So why are they so powerful? Well they're powerful in Quebec where they concentrate their efforts to get elected and thus only run in Quebec. From your amazement, you could probably understand why the rest of Canada thinks they're a bunch of greedy, parasetic bastards but the point is, they're probably only going to win seats in Quebec so why run anywhere else? They're also powerful federall because in the Canadian parliament, they have 70ish seats out of 308. They don't have to win all 70ish but they usually win a significant number of those seats to have bargaining power.
Sounds like you guys need to let them go hang out as an independent country and join us...we need the help keeping Donald Trump out of the WH
