I know this topic has been brought up before, but it's laid dormant for at least a year, so here I go: BENEFITS of a merger: 1) World Cup: South America currently gets 4 automatic bids and one playoff spot. North America currently gets 3 automatic bids and one playoff spot. FIFA could give the new merged American association 8 automatic spots and an additional playoff spot. So, potentially 9 spots. In terms of qualifying, we would have games that would generate more attendance, media attention and thus more revenue. Example: A qualifying group with: United States Colombia Honduras Venezuela Cuba Haiti vs. what we currently have. 2) Continental Championship: We could follow what UEFA does every four years and have a 16 team tournament w/ qualifying (more revenue). Imagine a tournament w/ Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, USA, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, Canada, Chile, etc. South America could only benefit from this....imagine the vast North American market (USA and Canada, Central America) that is untapped by Copa America. 3) League: We could also mirror UEFA here and have a Champions League with similar qualification/group stage/knock out state/final. Also, the Copa Libertadores could possibly become something like the Europa League. (More MLS teams in international competition.) I think a merger could work, and that it could benefit both continents. It would give North America more respect being linked with South American powerhouse teams, and it could give South American teams a better outlet to generate more revenue and exposure. CONS of a merger: this is where y'all come in.
Go to Conmebol and talk to them, benefits of the merger is for concacaf, not much for conmebol. Also could you not just posted on the old dormant thread? Well this one will probably get merged with that one.
This post is a %$"@#! joke right ? 1 ) CONCACAF is a very mediocre federation.. 2 ) The fact that the Mexican teams are already playing Libertadores pisses everybody, because they are not even in CONMEBOL 3 ) We don't want to play a Libertadores with 2 teams instead of 3 (Uruguay's case) just so a shitty Cuban or Hondurian team plays the Libertadores 4 ) CONCACAF sucks
Which Cuban (or ¨Hondurian¨) club took a CONMEBOL team's slot in this year's Libertadores? If Mexican teams were that mediocre they probably wouldn't be pissing everybody off.
I said that if CONMEBOL and CONCACAF were to merge shitty teams from those countries would replace South American teams in Libertadores.. Mexican teams are mediocre.. That is why they have never won anything, sorry to tell you
I agree that most concacaf club teams are shit which is why i believe that they should have a preleminary round to eliminate all but about 8 concacaf teams from the libertadores.
******** off and go back to CONMEBOL forums!!! Mods delete this post, thank you; sorry had to get it out.
Exactly. Copa Libertadores wouldn't change that much except for the addition of 1 or 2 MLS teams, Saprissa and Marathon. As for world cup qualifying, almost every team involved would have an easier schedule and a better chance at qualifying for the WC with the exception of USA and Mexcio. However, that would be good for both teams since they need better competition.
You're aware that even an MLS team won the Intercontinental after only two years in existence. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS3WknpDudo"]DC United vs Vasco da Gama : 12.5.1998 : Interamerican Cup 1998 : Game 2[/ame] FMF teams have barely begun competing and already reached the finals twice. Most on here probably agree that a merger isn't the way to go, but it isn't because we fear Uruguayan clubs (who haven't done anything internationally since the 1980s.)
OMG, I say CONCACAF sucks and all of a sudden I'm the bad guy ? CONCACAF sucks, that is why Internationally, no team has won anything. You can say whatever you want, but historically, South American teams are nose to nose with European teams.. A U.S team may have won an Intercontinental cup but that is it.. Oh, and Uruguayan clubs haven't won anything because the teams have to sell the players since the Uruguayan market is very smal.. In the past years I can name you players such as Luis Suarez Cristian Rodriguez Abel Hernandez Nicolas Lodeiro Gaston Ramirez Sebastian Fernandez, etc.. Unlike the Uruguayan league, MLS teams have money so they just buy any player they want ... But the truth is that no CONCACAF team should play in the Libertadores, why ? Libertadores is a South American cup, not even Latin American, so Mexican teams shouldn't even be playing the Libertadores, but.. Who cares, if you have money than you do what ever you want nowadays... I didn't even get into the Argentinian or Brazilian league.. Oh and to the guy that wrote up their.. You'r teams play against shity Central American teams.. In South America there are good teams in every single country
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_FIFA_Confederations_Cup#Final [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A6bhT49fOw"]final copa confederaciones 1999 mexico 4 brasil 3[/ame] You should consider doing a bit of research before responding. Correct, and that's ancient history. Just take a look at the most recent winners & runners-up of international club tourneys... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Records_and_statistics_of_the_Copa_Libertadores#By_club The vast majority are Brazilian and Argentinean. Similarly the last CONMEBOL team outside Brazil/Argentina to win the Toyota was Nacional back in 1988... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercontinental_Cup_(football)#Single_match_finals The only South American team outside Brazil/Argentina that has ever managed to reach the top for of the World Club Cup was LDU Quito three years ago (something several CONCACAF and even Asian clubs managed to do.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Club_World_Cup#Results And you're claming to be neck in neck with UEFA clubs. They just aren't good enough anymore. Do you seriously think there aren't any CONCACAF players as good as them? Most MLS players are ¨bought¨ from universities. That's an opinion alot of people have, but it has nothing to do with a lack of quality. This is CONMEBOL's claim to fame (and it's interesting Brazilians or Argentines rarely come on this forum.) Which other South American league is even close to the Mexican league? So why do your (including Uruguayan) clubs struggle with them then? I'll assume you aren't including Bolivia and Venezuela, but each nation (outside of Brazil, Argentina, and Chile) has 2 or 3 decent teams with the overwhelming majority being very poor, having horrible fields with animals grazing on them, low attendence rates, problems with corruption, barras, and (most of all) money issues. This game is still new to most of North America so obviously we aren't at UEFA's or Brazil/Argentina's level yet, but to say the entire CONCACAF sucks (every region including CONMEBOL has their minnows) is way off.
Yankee here. Although fandom creates hyperbole especially in support of your own squad, I really don't think it's hard to understand why Latin America would scoff at US in Cop Lib and such. TO me it sounds fun in theory, but we cannot be counted on to continously beat Central American teams. Until US make serious changes to it's talent pool and development, we will not make SERIOUS gains on our Mexican neighbors let alone Brazil or Argentina. We will always play catch up and the largely English speaking sporting world will keep their interest and more importantly MONEY away. My second point which ties into the first. There will only be a merger if CONMEBOL thinks that it could make a LOT more money than they do now.
Since 1998, Mexican teams have won the same amount of Libertadores titles as Uruguayan teams. At least our teams make the final every now and then. Your teams haven't even made it to a Sudamericana final. If our futbol is mediocre, how would you define yours?
No quieras defender lo que no puedes.... Uruguay no ha ganado nada en muchisimo tiempo....only moral victories, i like uruguay but dont make me shit on you cause last time i checked the Uruguayan league is pure shit...whens the last time a Uruguayan team made the final in the Libertadores? or whens the last time Uruguay made a final in Copa America? el 4o lugar en el Mundial se los dio, muy bueno para ustedes..pero no hagas ver que son muy superiores sr...no eres brasil ni argentina ok...
lol at manyas fans They make it to a libertodores for the first time in a long ass time and suddenly they feel like they are in the 60's again
Right... Low attendance rates ? HAHAHAAHAHAHAHA Peñarol 2010 - 45.000 per match Nacional 2010 - 40.000 per match And that is just Uruguayan teams.... Oh, and unlike Mexico, we atleast sing.. We're not dead people Hahahaha horrible fields with animals ? Right, like Estadio Único de La Plata ? Estadio Centenario ? Beira Río ? Monumental ? Parque Central ? etc ... I don't want to go on, but stop making a fool out of yourself... Your teams suck, you have no history, your fans are awful, nobody cares about your league except you guys... Oh, and your league is 40 % South Americans.. Go to any league in South America and I doubt you will see any Mexican teams, and yet, we win cups, you don't ... Como decimos en Uruguay ''LOS DE AFUERA SON DE PALO''
Brazil.........92.35 Argentina...66.016 Mexico.......55.933 Chile..........55 Colombia....50.5 Uruguay.....49.667 Paraguay...45.834 Ecuador.....40.667 Peru..........38.833 Venezuela..30.166 Bolivia.......23.333 After the 2011 group stage, Colombia now ahead of Uruguay. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=23335606#post23335606
You want to go ahead and post the rest of the attendance stats for that shit league?? fkn stadiums are falling apart ... whens the last time you guys won a cup/? no defiendas lo que no es tuyo pendejo...
lol The guy posts an argy stadium and the only half decent stadium in uruguay How about these? Those look on par with 4th division stadiums in Mexico And what cups are you talking about? Ah i see you are still riding coat tail
Typical responses after it hits them that their league is garbage on the field. "Oh yeah? Well our fans scream louder" and the classic "we belong to the same confederation as Brasil and Argentina."
What about the other fourteen teams in your leage? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruguayan_Primera_División#Current_clubs Estadio José Nasazzi......15,000 Parque Palermo..............6,500 Estadio Luis Tróccoli.......25,000 Jardines Del Hipódromo...18,000 Estadio Luis Franzini.......18,000 Estadio Charrúa.............14,000 Estadio Parque Capurro...10,000 Estadio Belvedere...........9,500 Parque Luis Méndez Piana.6,000 Estadio Viera.................12,000 Estadio Osvaldo Roberto...8,000 Estadio Olímpico..............9,500 Estadio Saroldi................6,000 Estadio Goyenola............12,000 This is just using stadium capacity (assuming every match is a sellout, and they aren't even close.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primera_División_de_México#Current_teams Azteca..........................114,000 Andrés Quintana Roo........20,000 Jalisco...........................60,713 Omnilife.........................49,850 Azul..............................35,161 Víctor Manuel Reyna.........25,222 Morelos..........................41,056 Tecnológico....................32,662 Victoria..........................25,000 Hidalgo...........................25,000 Cuauhtémoc....................48,648 Corregidora.....................34,130 Alfonso Lastras................28,000 Corona...........................30,000 Nemesio Díez...................27,000 3 de Marzo......................23,000 Universitario....................45,000 Olímpico Universitario........63,186 Compared to Mexico's stadiums. Both the Primera A (Mexico's second division) and MLS also have far higher attendance rates. The rest of CONMEBOL outside of Brazil, Argentina, and Chile are the same thing. Where was the crowd wave invented (or at least popularized?) Your second largest stadium holds 25,000 people while the US, Mexico, and Canada all have around a dozen that are twice that size. Please stop then you're giving us a headache. The three best World Cups of all time (in terms of attendance, revenue, lack of hooliganism, and the two greatest players of all time lifting the Cup) were held in CONCACAF. 1970, 1986, and 1994. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xDS92cE-9Y"]Gol Estadio Jalisco[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Bb3JFjPouQ"]Club America v Pachuca Estadio Azteca[/ame] Listen closely enough and you'll hear singing. ¨You guys¨ is well over 100 million people. South America produces better players, you're correct there. What? Seriously, outside of a couple of Central American countries, this game is relatively new to the region and we've already made enormous strides. That seems to bother you for some reason. No one is denying CONMEBOL's history but we live in the present.
Mexicans, you think fancy stadiums paid by companies make you better ? hahaha your a joke Mexico, go play something else, please..
so why even make an argument about stadiums idiot? paid by companies?? are u fkn stupid? what the fk does that have to do with anything?
