There's a new article at the Sabotage Times featuring some new information about the inspirational game:
It also says that the team can't join until 2013 because the Red Bulls have exclusive rights to the region until that year.

The exclusive rights to the region seems to be some bullshit. First it was 2009, then 2010, now its been changed to 2013? Someone is throwing the bullshit around and hard!

No, i think that is actually true now. I wasn't beleiving it until we talked to Byrne and Fraga. They do have territorial rights until 2013.
I think that's where the number came from.

The way I see it , It will have to be a takeover on an existing team. I certainly wouldn't want them to destroy the identity of say the LI Rough Riders in order to create a Cosmos PDL team.

From experience - the Rough Rider guys were looking for a "strategic partnership" - so I am not so sure that is out of the question.

I agree with you but they were not going up from where they were - so that is a possibility.

    HOWEVER

I want to see the news because if not - thats a step backwards from our Q and A

I'd have less of a problem if it were any of the other PDL teams in the area, but I feel the identity of the LIRR is different and should be saved. They argueably have the most history and tradition of any club in the entire NY Metro region and I personally feel it would be wrong to destroy that in order to promote the NY Cosmos name.

Absolutely.. It would be a huge blow to their credibility if they don't.

I don't think it's ever been a matter of territorial exclusivity but instead rights to a second NY franchise. I'm certain Metromedia had rights to the second NY franchise and they passed on when they sold to AEG but when RB bought the franchise, the rights to the second NY team went back to MLS as a collective. In other words, since MLS started it isn't a matter of should there be just one franchise for the Designated Market Area but who has rights to the second franchise.

I've heard directly from the mouth of Erik Soler that they welcome NY2 (specific context of the conversation was the Cosmos) as a "little brother" (I wasn't about to tell him how much I disagreed. ;)).

So I'm really shocked to hear this notion that RBNY has "territorial exclusivity" until 2013. I don't think they have it and - if their public statements are to be believed - don't care for it. Maybe there's some kind of gentlemen's agreement, if not contractual stipulation b/w MLS and RB to hold off on NY2 until 2013? I've never heard Garber say NY2 can't happen until 2013. Didn't we all think NY2 quite possible the last round or two of expansion?

Don't mean to troll here but this really confusing and seemingly impossible to get a straight or correct answer.

Yea - it seems no one really knows the truth of territorial rights etc.

Bottom line is - Garber says earliest the team can happen is 2013 - so all those rights seem to be out the window now.

RB seems on board and the league wants it. Just a matter of getting it done.

I just would like the league to be a bit more open with the information they give

From what I have heard the prelim talks were going to be the weekend of June 25th - 26th.

I originally thought it was the Saturday which is the Gold Cup final but then I heard maybe the Sunday.

That is what we have heard -

You are not kidding - someone mentioned that they would be announcing it soon but they would not be available for cup play being they are late - however - as you pointed out - PDL starts tomorrow.

My question is this - looking at the schedule (trying to decide which Knights games I will hit) it seems our division does not start until next week.

Either way - that is something they have not produced.

Skeptics are going to be live again - and understandably so.

Unless they take over Brooklyn it can't be done as they said ( the team would play in the city ). The arguement ( which I'm beginning to subscribe to) if they can't get a deal to get a PDL team going, how can you trust them to get a deals with the city and MLS done.
